but how can u explain 9 cycles count considering the age of the mac by coconut battery is 2 weeks?

It's unusual, but not unheard of for new Macs to have several (up to 10) battery cycles. Chance are that your unit was selected for some additional testing. That's a good thing, since it means it is less likely to have other more serious issues (like image retention). If you bought it from an Apple Store or Apple online it isn't repackaged. Every open-box return is sent back for refurbishment.

Apple tests their batteries before shipping them, the normal cycle for the new 2013 rmbp is 12 cycles. So it is not a used one but a brand new quality controlled mac. My sister got her mid 2012 rmbp with 12 cycles, so we got it replaced at the local apple store, and again 12 cycles!!!! So we called tech support and they clarified that all new rmbp macs are tested before shipping and the batteries go extensive testing to check for battery quality and condition. Noting to worry about.

How can I find out how many cycles the new rMBP has...

The best thing you could do is remove cocunut battery and enjoy your laptop. I had that cursed app on my last laptop and would check it constantly for cycle count and battery health. It does nothing but promote OCD.
It's the devil!

Actually I may remove mine as well!! Lol

They are 100% refurbished/repaired and reused in future services.
Refurbished means replacing defective parts of a computer or any device. A logic board is replaced with a new one before a mac is sold as a refurb. Apple rocks.

Couldn't that same definition just as easily refer to replacing defective capacitors or chips or repairing faulty solder joints?

I see your point, though, in that troubleshooting faulty motherboards and making repairs is less cost effective than replacement in many circumstances.

This is simply not correct.

A defective module identified in testing is refurbished with a replacement part... No guarantee it's new, and if there is nothing wrong, it's not replaced at all. I have seen, more than one, "brand new" out of the box refurbs with previously used logic boards.

After reading so many threads on this and just having bought a new rMBP myself, I'm beginning to think this is normal.

Though the one I purchased did not have 9 cycles, it had 3 cycles. In the past I've never purchased a Mac with more than 1 cycle in the count, and that 1 cycle was always after the initial full charge.

That said, this computer is a new purchase and I would never suspect Apple of selling refurbished units as new.

This. Refurbished means they take it back, examine it, possibly replace the topcase and bottom, and resell it.
