I may be completely wrong in this but isn't it also up to the drivers discretion if he wants to leave a package at the door or mailbox? I've seen in the past where they will go and place the package in a "safe" location and out of peoples view to avoid a package going missing.

As soon I get the apple shipping email I divert the shipment to the local UPS store.
I tried this with FedEx. I've never had an issue with it in the past but they shot me down this time (bang bang). The FedEx rep I spoke with said I had to contact Apple and request a hold for pickup through them. Is this something new this year? Has anybody received this response from UPS?

Why is your building signing for packages addressed to YOU? Seems like an open invitation for things like this to happen.

Exactly! I would hold building management responsible as they signed off on it and are responsible for making sure you receive it.
Having said that, I hope surveillance finds the douche bag who stole it.

It’s been available with ups for a few years now.

Ups makes it easily difficult to take advantage of the series.
They seem to change the name of the program frequently. I think now it’s called UPS choice.
The serivixes they offer are very good.

FedEx I always try request a hold at the depot. It’s worth my time going to the depot to pick things up.
These clowns like to drop packages on the uncovered/unprotected front door instead of the porch. I guess they would rather tromp on the grass vs walking on the driveway.

Definitely report this to police and have them investigate. Really hope you catch this guy.

UPDATE: CRISIS AVERTED WATCH FOUND!!!

First, thanks to everyone for their comments and concerns. I am thankful for the good tips from those who posted with suggestions to help get me started on the search.
Turns out an employee in the building, having signed for it, actually removed the package from the shelving area and locked in the office for safe keeping. Apparently he had an idea what the package could be when he read the label and thought it best to put it away but did not bother to text, call or email me that he did that. What turned out to be a good deed caused me a sleepless night but thankfully the manager was able to piece everything together from the surveillance cameras and get statements from employees. Needless to say I’ve changed my policy on how I will have them accept packages on my behalf.

Almost sounds like the employee hid it to take it for themselves later and came up with this as a cover story after they knew they were caught.

Amazing all the drama that could have been avoided with a little patience.

That’s not fair to say considering all signs pointed to it being missing and I think any reasonable person would’ve thought so if they were in my position. Of course I waited until the next day to report it and no one in the office knew what happened to it until they reviewed the security cameras.
I hope for you to not experience what I felt but maybe if you did someone would show compassion to you that you don’t seem to have.

That’s a possible theory.

That’s a much better ending than having to wait for an elongated investigation between Apple and UPS, which could have taken weeks. Actually, a female Member had her Series 3 stolen months back and investigation lasted over a month.

OP, it sounds like no one here actually knows what they are talking about.

I worked for UPS for 12 years. UPS is liable, but they are not liable to you. They are liable to Apple, and Apple will need to call them and have a trace initiated. You can try to start one but it is usually a waste of time. It needs to be done by Apple to go into a claim.

UPS is going to close the trace with a proof of signature. Because that’s what they do. It will need to be reopened for a denial of receipt and process into a claim.

Bottom line, they didn’t deliver the package to you! They do not have your signature. UPS is liable. You should end up getting a refund but it may take some time.
If you actually worked for UPS then you would know that a direct signature must be requested without it anybody can sign at address. Sounds like buyer gave instructions to leave at managers office, common at apartment buildings and a nice convenience. Looks like it worked out,

This is extremely common here in Seattle. In my building we have a lady who does this for us, and will put them in our apartment (provided you sign the release when you move in.) it’s extremely handy, and. I’ve not heard of a single package gone missing.

Most of the newer buildings have the exact same thing, and a screen showing if you have a package. It will essentially show the apartment number and an icon of the deliverer (ups, fedex, Amazon), and the packages are kept by the 24 hour concierge.

This is how it's done in NYC in doorman buildings. It's a big amenity too. My building every package is signed for, scanned in and I have to sign for it from the doorman

When my Apple products ship via Fedex, I always wait till after 9 PM to request a hold for pick up. I found that any time before it, I will get a call similar to yours and told me that I had to contact Apple. But I didn't had to call and simply ignored. and it still ended up at Fedex Ship and Print store that I selected for pick up.

I sometimes get a call in the morning stating that my package will be available to pick up at the location I selected after the certain time (Usually after 9 AM).

When I worked there and it’s been nearly five years since I left, there were a few options regarding a signature.

First, if requested by the shipper a signature must be obtained. There was an option to sign the infonotice.

Second, again, if requested by the shipper, a signature must be obtained in person, with the option that it be by someone over the age of 21.

Third, if the shipper did not request a signature, the decision is ultimately determined by the driver.

Why would I lie about working for UPS? If you have any questions I became pretty familiar with their Freight services and package delivery. Feel free to ask me more questions.

That member was not alluding that you were ‘lying’ about working for UPS, I think they were alluding that some of the information you gave may have been misconstrued and *inaccurate*. The other point being that some are receiving notifications that ‘no signature is required’ from UPS for delivery of Apple, simply when that is not of the case, they do actually require the signature.

None of the information I gave was inaccurate. And I completely disagree that Burgman was not calling me a liar.

I ordered the 44mm Gold SS that was delivered today 9/24 at 10am to my apartment building. It was signed for and the management office even sent me a personal email confirmation, with tracking number, showing my package as delivered. They keep our packages on a shelf under video surveillance near the office. Upon arriving home at 9pm I check the shelf and see a couple packages delivered to me from Amazon but alas, no Apple Watch. What recourse do I have in tracking this down? I’ve contacted both UPS and Apple to get an open investigation going. Apple says they can’t tell if the watch has been activated and in order to get this replaced there has to be an investigation first. Of course I am waiting on video evidence from my management office but I’m curious, has anyone had this happen and if so, how quickly did Apple handle it?

Apple insists on a direct signature at the door unless you waive your rights...so how did the management office sign for it unless you did waive your rights or UPS screwed up?
