It's apps or functions like these that make me question why I bought an iPhone 4 instead of an Android phone. I mean, I love my IPhone, but come on!
It's coming to the iPhone anyway. Why bother?

It's hard to believe Google is at fault here since they would benefit greatly from Google Navigation being on the iPhone. However, Apple would lose a lot of money by Google Navigation being in the App Store for free. They would lose 30% of all GPS apps, which is likely millions. Furthermore, AT&T is likely blocking this app because they charge for this service. Google Navigation would cause this service to die. And yes, I know there are other countries in the world, but unfortunately this is how it works. If AT&T doesn't want something, then Apple has a history of blocking it from the iOS.

So, if you follow the money trail, you can see who is not allowing what into App Store.
So nav. companies endorse Apple to keep free navigation services out of the App Store? When was this announced? I don't think Apple would lose 30% of all GPS apps. Some offer far more functionality (and quality) than Google's offerings, and do different things. AT&T could be blocking the app, but there's already better navigation services (think Navigon) which have a onetime fee and offer more features. AT&T can't block it for eternity; just like they couldn't give tethering the cold shoulder forever either. ;)

Update: Sorry for the choppy word choice/ writing.

That's Google's fault. Not Apple's. I'm not entirely sure if Google Maps Navigation will come to the iPhone, but even if it doesn't, I'm sure Apple is already working on their own solution.

Google nav isnt on iphone because apple wont approve it. Google has even said this publicly. Same thing with google voice. Apple is really doing a disservice to its users because these two apps are probably more useful than 99% of all the apps in the app store, and they're free!

I would still be using an iphone if google voice was available as an actual app for ios.

I need proof! :D

No, seriously, where's the source link for Apple's rejection of Google Maps Navigation? I must have missed this. :p

I'd love this app, it's one of the most innovative apps out there, along with Google Maps Navigation. Can't this be on Cydia or something? :p
Why not the regular App Store (that's where it's headed, by the way, unless you're referring to Google Maps Navigation )?

Google says its navigation will come to iPhone, if Apple approves

"Apple is a close partner," a Google spokesperson told AppleInsider Wednesday. "Millions of users experience Google Maps on the iPhone. We will continue to work with Apple to bring innovation, including Latitude and Navigation, to users but you'll have to speak to Apple about availability."

Google maps w/ nav and google voice are very very good on android. Both apps integrate into the OS seamlessly. At this point even if gnav and gvoice come over to iOS, I doubt it will be as functional because of how deeply it integrates into Android OS. Voice especially I dont think I can give up. it completely replaces my txt msging app and i never have to pay for text messages. iOS users really got shafted by apple by rejecting google voice.

Oh and btw, navigon isn't better than google maps w/ nav. The only advantage it has is all the mapping info is stored locally, so you're not dependant on having cell service.

I guess so... but thanks for the source link. :)

Google Voice or Maps Navigation probably won't make it to the iPhone, but I'm pretty sure Apple is working on it's own navigation service. As far as Google Voice, hopefully it'll get approved someday. I can dream, can't I?

If you really want google voice, you can either use the webapp or jailbreak and use GV mobile like I do.

google maps w/ nav I can live without. I'm sure navigon would be a suitable replacement. But google voice thats the important one. It's incredibly useful and on top of that you get unlimted texting for free.

That's a saving of up to $240 per year on ATT!!!

Screw this, I want Google Voice
Check out the below quote for your iPhone Google Voice solution. --> How bout' it? :)

It's a shame Apple rejected it, but at least there's a few workarounds.

P.S. @wreckshop - What phone do you have on AT&T?

see how nice Google is? Theyre not grade a a$$holes like Jobs.

What planet are you on? Google is evil!!! Greedy, greedy... Who need Goggles anyways! We'll see it like google's navigation that they offered over a year ago.

That's cool! I didn't know about that.

I'd love to see Google Sky Map get ported to the iPhone. There are similar ones in the App Store but the Google app is free and works better than some of the paid Apple choices.

Thank you for your refreshing honesty.

I truly love my iPhone 4 & new 15" MacBook Pro.

It's a shame that instead of competing with great products like this, Steve Jobs narcissistic personality takes center stage. It's annoying, acerbic and out of place.

Nonetheless it is what it is. An example that many Apple followers aspire to.

After all, why be a pleasant intelligent adult when you can be a hero worshipping dolt.

Excellent post, well said.*

While I still use my iPhone 4, I've demoted it to my secondary smartphone for the reasons above.*

Now I'm enjoying an Andriod smartphone with it's brilliant 4" super amoled display, and all the free Google goodness they bring to smartphones.*

Thanks to Android & the openness it provides I'm also thrilled to be using SWYPE, the killer app of all time. After viewing just a few of their two minute video tutorials, I've got the technique down pat.*Now I'm exceedingly fast on a touchscreen keyboard. Text input will never be dull, boring & slow again.

Thanks to Google & Android, smartphones have taken a giant leap forward.*

exactly where is it said that apple won't approve google navigation? nowhere have i seen anything saying apple haven't approved it or that it's even ready to be submitted to the app store process. so unless you can link to a source that specifically says apple have said no. you're really just jumping the gun.

It's simple really. Apples business model is about monetizing everything. It's about power & control. It's about charging obscene prices. It's about bolstering the CEO's ego. It's about locking customers into Apples closed ecosystem.*

If Apple was fearless they would have already approved the app in question. If they wanted the best for their customers they would have already approved SWYPE, the real killer app. The fact is, they've been "reviewing SWYPE for six long months, and still fear approving it. I use it on my Android phone all day, everyday. I wish I had it on my iPhone 4!*

Don't get me wrong, I love most Apple products and have purchased tens of thousands of dollars in Apple laptops and such. But the direction they've chosen in recent years will not last forever. You cannot force intelligent people to buy products over the long haul just because they look good. The competition is catching up, and Steve Jobs knows it.*

so you cannot actually provide any source to the claim? you're just basing stuff on your own opinion and presenting it as fact? you've given no evidence that apple has actually rejected google's navigation app. did you read the links i put? google themselves said they're not making it for the iphone.

as for swype, personally i don't care about it, its just lazy. plus considering at the end of June Swype were still developing the app for the iPhone, how can apple have been reviewing it for '6 long months'??

Why would nav companies "announce" such a thing? It's not their decision to make or announce. I wouldn't think they would "endorse" this either, as they wouldn't have to. Apple not wanting to lose out on its 30% cut is motivation enough to keep GN out of App Store.

I'm really not sure what functionalities the traditional nav apps would have over Google Nav since I've never used Google Nav, so I can't comment on that. However, i'm absolutely 100% there would be a handful of people who would pick a free app over on that costs $49.99. Tis equates to a loss of revenue for Apple.

And comparing this to tethering is apples to oranges. AT&T never wanted to block tethering forever, just until their network could handle it. Remember, AT&T makes money off of tethering. They never wanted to block a source of revenue, they just couldn't handle it.

There won't be any proof. Don't be that naive. All you need to use is common sense. Apple does not release information about what apps they reject. It would be very bad publicity. Furthermore, it is against the SDK agreement to publicly disclose why your app was rejected. Many small companies will do this, but not large corporations.

What planet are you on? Google is evil!!! Greedy, greedy... Who need Goggles anyways! We'll see it like google's navigation that they offered over a year ago.
...and to think their unofficial motto is "Don't be evil".

oh you said it had an expected release date, by the end of the year isn't that, its just an estimated timeframe, big difference.
Fine. My point is, they're giving at least some sort of timeframe. It's better than nothing. ;)

Good point. I'm sure they'll approve Swype, but not as a "replace stock iOS keyboard" app. Apple would never allow that.

If they don't announce it, how do you know? The iTunes/ App Store ecosystem was never meant to make large amounts of money. How long have you missed that point? The 30% cut isn't that big of a deal to Apple - the App Store exists to attract customers to their products - it's not supposed to be a major moneymaker; they've stated this themselves. To your last few comments, what happens when Apple releases their own free navigation service? Hmm? It'll happen somewhere down the road (I mean, why do you think Apple bought Placebase and Poly9?). :apple:
