The RIM BlackBerry and the Apple iPhone topped U.S. consumer smartphone sales for the first half of 2008, retail researcher NPD said Monday.

From January to July 2008, U.S. consumers bought 9 million smartphones, an increase of 84 percent from the same period a year ago, NPD found. Smartphone revenue increased 71 percent to nearly $1.7 billion.

In terms of market share, Research in Motion topped NPD's survey, followed by Apple, Palm, Samsung and Motorola.

…the two models of the iPhone now on the market outsold all smart phones in July, including the Blackberry series, the entire Palm portfolio, and any individual Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or other smart phone model from a branded service provider. The iPhone's U.S. sales in July were equal to those of the most popular feature phone, LG's Chocolate.
