But an unlocked iPhone in canada is kinda like and iPhone 0.5

You can't use visual voicemail, can't really use internet whenever you like unless you want to be shafted with a $400 monthly bill, and you have the risk of an update rendering your phone unusable... I wish it would just be official already...

visual voicemail is an AT&T only feature right now.. and like someone has already mentioned.. I get very few voicemails.. but even If i did really want that service.. there is an app you can get for visual voicemail on non at&t networks..

as well, all you need to do is ensure that you dont use the edge network and stick with wifi.. I dont know where you would go nowadays that dont have wifi connections.. obviously some are locked.. but it probably isnt long until there is a wifi hacking app for the iphone

as far as the iphone being rendered unusuable... sure it might relock.. but it wont take long for them to reunlock it..

CAD and USD are pretty much even now, good time to take a trip over the border and pick one up. ;)

I live in Vancouver and I say we should all give Rogers the finger.

Go over the border, buy one, unlock it and just don't sign up for a data plan. Use the features of the iPhone and just use wi-fi when you can. Like someone else said, you don't *need* constant on Internet even though it would be nice. Visual voicemail would be nice too, but even our cousins in the south only get that if they're with AT&T.

You can then use the lovely beast and Rogers only gets their measly 30 bucks a month.

Canada is a lovely place and I wouldn't live anywhere else but we are truly living in a wasteland when it comes the things like this. The CRTC has effectively stomped out free competition in the wireless data market and Telus and Rogers both have seemingly free reign to charge whatever they think they can get away with.

Think about it really, why would Rogers want to bring the iPhone in? They'd have to lower the rates for it or Apple wouldn't do it and if they lower rates for iPhone, all the people with current data plans will want their rates lowered too.

I honestly don't think we're ever going to see iPhone here. Hopefully I'm wrong but I just don't see it happening.

Cheers.

Like I said, we don't have iTunes TV fully two years after it was first offered for very similar reasons - and I doubt if we'll ever get it.

For God's sake, we still can't even get TiVo in Canada. It took about nine years for us to get (I know some of you will hate me for this) Fox News here.

I'd be shocked if we see the iPhone before a full Rev. 2, at a minimum.

Yeah. :( Buy a iTunes US gift card and buy your shows that way. That's what I'm doing.

As for cell phones, I'm still up in the air. As I said before I'm contemplating buying an iPhone from the States, which requires that I stick with a GSM provider (Fido currently). Otherwise, I'd just as soon switch to Virgin Mobile, they seem a lot cheaper.

I drove to buffalo on tuesay and got it.. got home and unlocked it and its amazzing. I think its worth it to just get it from the states and unlock it. Theres enough wifi locations to use. Just put some apps like games for when you dont have wifi to keep you busy.

I'm speculating that canada will never get it. Just the way its going to be with Rogers prices and monopoly.

I don't think that it's ever coming to Canada.

I mean - we don't have the iTunes TV Store more than two years after the video iPod came out.

Hell, we don't even have TiVo up here. Not officially, at least.

So, yeah, I don't think that Rogers will make enough money on it to release it - and I don't think that Apple will compromise the experience enough to meet with Rogers' terms.

Sucks for us. But, let's face it, particularly in the area of media and the like, a lot of things suck about this country.

You might want to visit the tivo website. Its been available to Canada for some time now. No units in the stores but hey our dollar is better then the USA buck..Well almost!

also if you live in toronto you have pretty much wifi anywhere you go, 80% of downtown toronto has free wifi by the city anyways...

No, we will not be getting the iPhone at all this year. Maybe not even next year, (i'm thinking next year for the Holidays....maybe)

sigh...

move south and live in a war country, but with iPhones....

or stay here with our little tiny military involvement and no iPhone...

hmmmm, war isn't looking too bad....j/k..kind of .

I signed up for Rogers two years ago because i knew the iPhone would come out, and that Rogers would be the one to get it....great plan right guys...? right?....guys...?

sucks.

There must be a petition specifically for bringing the iPhone to Canada and Rogers...?? is there one? At least we can send them a petition with hundreds of thousands of names on it, and watch as they laugh at it and use it for TP.

I for one may just go with the sloppy seconds (iPod touch) or the gamble on the iBrick (unlocked iPhone)....

but after being annoyed and disgusted by this since at least the beginning of summer, I'm starting to just say F this effing iPhone....it's not worth the anger it produces inside my brain.

rant over.

:)

You know why you want the f` iphone? Cause we cannot just go out and get it. If we could it would be no big thing. Its also the quest of man for the latest and greatest toys and to be ahead of the coporate world when it comes to outsmarting them (hacking). I saw the thing yesterday and I drooled. Its so cool. But yet all it is, is a cell phone and a glorified mp3 player with internet access....But I still want it!
