There is a big change in listening habits as one gets older.

As a teenager, I used to be in front of the radio at night, ready to TAPE anything new or the latest.
(Remember TAPES?) to have it at parties etc. Also, following ones favorites.

Then life takes over for 30 years with a job, family etc. and one listens to the occasional song, buying an album (Remember albums?) or later CDs (Remember CDs?)

Once one grows out of music due to other interests or age, it becomes clear that

a) the music scene is oversaturated with a lot of mediocre talent and fads
b) it is not important at all
c) we all go back to the music we grew up with (Which we have, so no purchase necessary)

So, anybody with half a brain just has to eventually concede that there is no point to jump onto anything exclusive.

I look at it this way:

If I have lived all my life without something that comes along, I can still continue to do so.

All a matter of patience and willpower. There are no must haves (well maybe in business),
but a lot of great to have products.

Unfortunately today's immediate gratification generation doesn't seem to be able to see what is really important.
How else can a Paris Hilton, Kardashians or other fake people become celebrities?

It does exist in radio/Youtube/Twitter etc. and people will know it exists. If it doesn't exist in a streaming service, then it's going to get downloaded illegally and added to the local music library. Exclusives may be good for Apple Music in short term, but they're not good for streaming business overall. That business is still growing and the biggest competition are free alternatives like YouTube and illegal downloads. If it's going to be "this exclusive here, that exclusive there" then the potential new users will say "well, I just keep downloading stuff and get all those exclusives".

Nope.

These exclusive deals suck. They hurt all customers of other streaming services (and vice versa)

I guess apple music managers are sitting in their office now with their pants down....

So you are saying the artists are "servicing" the Apple Music managers right now? Nice gig. How do I join their team?

Exactly, all these exclusive deals ruin the major selling point of music streaming. If you're not going to get all the music from one place and each streaming service has their own exclusives, people are going to switch back to downloading illegally.

They don’t care. They will continue do this to squeeze just a bit more money out of it until they have nowhere else to go. They are counting on short-term and mid-term benefits. Ultimately, they just want to make profits. As long as a lot of money is flowing, they will not accept any radical changes or loss of decision-making power.

but how do they make more money by withholding it from other streaming services? do you think Apple is paying them extra for the privilage? must be a lot of money in that case to choose this over wide availability

yes

good thing shes not even the one singing on her last few albums ;) if i was her i would feel rather stupid lip singing to recorded vocals from like 1998. she could at least bother to record some "live recordings" every once in a while for her concerts

Glory -- that's what all the Spotify users said when they learned they won't have to see this album when they log in.

Honestly, I love these exclusives that bifurcate the streaming music industry. They just prove that buying the music you like and keeping it for as long as you like at no additional cost is the way to go. Bonus: better sound quality.

That's exactly the point: there should be no 'wrong' streaming service.

I have an apple music subscription, so that's not the issue here. But imagine your favorite band would release their next album exclusively on Deezer or Spotify.

My experience differs from yours. I expect I'm quite a bit younger than you are but I am well established in my career and no longer a "kid." Music is still a big part of my life and I haven't stagnated on a single decade worth of releases. I'm positive I have at least half a brain as well.

I'm not interested in Paris Hilton (no one is anymore) or the Kardashians though (and they've been waning for some time).

What a score for Apple!

I hear they are in talks to get Debbie Gibson's next album, exclusive!

First Naomi Watts as the face of your new commercial and now Britney?
Someone needs to hire a Pop Culture guru who knows what year it is.

They won't. Who the hell releases exclusively on Spotify?

At most, Daft Punk would release on Tidal. But I don't see that coming.

Not trying to offend anyone. I was just reporting how I feel about music and exclusivity.

I am almost 65 (19 in my head:), so I have seen and done a lot and that as being kind of an international citizen, rather than just knowing about USA.

I still like music and being from Europe I listen to a wider spectrum of music, when I do.

Just mentioned Hilton etc. as placeholders for bad taste and people following. The same goes on internationally btw with reality "stars"

One of my points was that anything exclusive is of absolutely no interest to me and that I gave up long time ago on MUST haves. If everybody thought so that exclusivity stuff would stop.

It may just come with age or it could be just me aligning my priorities on the finish line of life.

I no longer need expensive hip designer clothes, don't buy brands if I can get generic etc.etc.
When something I want doesn't represent proper value, I just don't buy it.

In the process of getting rid of possessions and simplifying life, after basics like food and clothes,
I am fine with my MBP, an iPad 2nd gen and an iPhone 6S plus.

Streaming music is not for me, as I mostly listen to talk and of that I prefer comedy.
Laughing is just the best and I look for funny things in daily life (observing what people do is many times hilarious) and I like clever comedians with brilliant thoughts.

Looking forward to the days of peace when actually nobody wants anything from me. (Boss, customers etc.)

They can exclusive all they want but so long as Apple Music is tethered to the train wreck that is iTunes on desktops I won't touch it with a barge pole

Exacty. All this time and money wasted on PR bs should all be used to fix the service. Starting with ending the dinosaur that is iTunes.

No offense taken. We all have our preferences. It's a wonderfully diverse world and we're all different. :)

It would have been big news back in 1998...today not so much. There's a reason why she's playing Las Vegas with the other has-beens.

[doublepost=1470327323][/doublepost]Wow you had time to do all that AND crash the economy? Such a multitasker.

OKAY. NOW, I'm invested in this story.

She currently has two songs in the top 10 on iTunes and one is gaining traction quickly to become number one. All of this seems to be off the preorder for the album which is already huge. Rolling Stone, Billboard, Spin, MTV, Hollywood Reporter, Time, and various outlets have already created full stories on the traction, and social media (Twitter specifically) is eating this up and praising it to high heavens. From my understanding, it hasn't even been 24 hours yet.

I don't know much about her..but to all of you..did she kill your dog? Take your husbands? Tell Tim to stop focusing on the Mac line?

I'm so confused as to why there is a blast of middle school hate to the point where you are deliberately degrading an artist? I mean, I could understand if this was someone who was obviously a non-factor or new to the game..but clearly it's not.

Also, has the Macrumors community reached such a low that a first front paged article on an exclusive Apple Music content release is too embarrassing to stay main paged because their posters act as teenagers?
