Considering the cost of living and tax rates in the UK, I'm not surprised your income is higher. If I lived in the UK, my current grad student stipend wouldn't even be enough to allow me to starve to death. ;)

Oh if we're talking about being a student :p
How much does it cost to go to university or college over there again? I didn't work through either and my debt comes to about £5k ($10k)!

Is that why so many American universities are filled with international students (including many from Britain)?

I think you'll find British universities are also filled with international students (including many from America).

Maybe it's just something universities the world over have in common :p

The average UK person will this year have a greater income than their US counterpart for the first time since the 19th Century, figures suggest.

Good thing too, because according to new figures released today, the UK is the third most expensive country in the world in which to live, behind Norway and France.

The country's reputation as "rip-off Britain" seems assured, after research by banking giant HSBC showed only Norway and France had higher living costs.

The survey, which uses data from the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranks countries according to the relative cost of sustaining a typical British lifestyle and illustrates how long a Briton's typical annual expenditure would last overseas.

Of course, this seems based around consumer spending and doesn't quantify health costs, for instance. Need a heart bypass or a hip replacement in some parts of the world? It's going to cost you, big time...

Yeah, we don't appreciate how lucky we are with the NHS over here.
I still can't believe that you get a bill for your ambulance journeys in America! wtf!

That's very true. I wasn't implying the prestigious universities in the UK don't have many, many US students.

I just though the post I was replying to painted a slightly slanted picture!

Wow, took you guys long enough... :p

I don't know that saying you're better than Americans is that much of a victory. I'm from America (Ohio) but my China made toothpick is better than America.

Our only saving grace at the moment is that in 11 months time, we may be back on the road to recovery...

I really don't hold America in that high regard anymore. I lost my Patriotism after this whole "Iraq/Afghanistan/Iran/Still Can't find Bin Laden/Patriot Act that takes away rights/Almost a Police State/America is the Police of the world" thing

Well gosh, if things are so bad here, you can always relocate to the worker's paradise of France and stay with your buddy Alec Baldwin...oh wait, he still hasn't called the movers yet, has he? :D

How does one go about obtaining British citizenship? With the outlook of the upcoming election candidates I think things are going to just get worse here:(

Well all I can say is that which ever country has the Oompah Lumpahs wins
:D

pfffffffft! good luck with that. Even just to get a long term visa (not citizenship) you're going to need: a very specialized job which is needed here, or go to university here, or a close british relative, or a british spouse. It doesn't end there either, you need to renew and renew... it's not as simple as it used to be, especially for americans because america set itself apart from everywhere else. It's somewhat easier if you are a part of the commonwealth of nations, which, no surprise, the US is not. All of that is a long story however.

(I'm american, by the way, so I'm not just talking out of my ass about coming to live in the UK. I learned the painful way)

FTR - There's different crap to deal with no matter where you are. Every day I am shocked at how badly Britons are ripped off. The cost to live here is astounding. So you might have a crap president and other annoyances but if you think moving out of the country will solve all problems, it doesn't. Just new and different problems to be had.

All of that being said however, I am happy here and don't plan to leave any time soon. :)
