I've dropped my iPhone 4 from waist-high or higher on cement, hardwood floors, and ceramic tile without a case. A tiny tiny little indent on the rubber casing near the glass on the back from the cement in the backroom of a store, but other than that no visible damage. I really think it depends on how it falls.

Ummmm, 7th or 8th "bad" drop, plus lots of "good" drops? In all the years I've had a mobile phone, you can count the number of total drops on one hand, with some fingers missing. It just sounds to me like you are clumsy, and if you can't be bothered to protect your phone from your own negligence, what do you want people here to do about it?

People arguing that using glass is a flawed design seem to be misreading the situation. YOU bought the phone, nobody forced you. You KNEW it has glass on the front and rear, so the only flaw here is your own decision to buy the phone in the first place. Fact is, you bought it because it's by Apple and it looks good. So, you have absolutely ZERO right to complain about the materials used in its construction.

Buy an iPhone, don't buy an iPhone, buy a case, don't buy a case...make your own decisions and stand by your own actions and negligence rather than trying to pass the effort and blame onto others.

I think that says it.

If you think glass (tough or not) is bad material - don't buy a GLASS PHONE.

The iPhone as well as some of the Android phones use a special glass from Corning that is the strongest glass on Earth, so your comment about a flawed design is wrong. That said, nothing in unbreakable, all you can do is find safe ways of handling or protecting it physically.

I believe you're talking about gorilla glass. And yes i know that the front portion of the iPhone is made out of gorilla glass, however, the back is regular easily-breakable glass that you have at home.
So your comment about the iPhone 4 having the strongest glass on Earth, is wrong.

I agree, I know a few people that have shattered their iphone 4, the glass is not strong at all, then again the phone is all glass which is a flaw in itself, I am not sure why Axl made the back of the phone glass. That is just a stupid design IMO

Holy effing crap, you people are unbelievable.

The OP did not make this thread to discuss ugly iPhone cases, crappy phone alternatives, nor did he complain about how fragile the iPhone 4 is. He simply said he dropped it numerous times, it broke, and he's trying to figure out which replacement part(s) he needs. That's it.

Yet everyone insists on posting ridiculous stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with what the OP asked, such as the "flawed" glass design of the iPhone, clumsy people not buying smartphones, etc. He acknowledged that it's broken, blamed no one but himself, and just wants to fix it. There was absolutely no complaining at all.

Seriously... try reading the post, people. It's not that hard.

^ that is an absurd way to think.

If you drop your phone a lot, an iPhone, or many other smartphones for that matter, may not be for you.

If you are too stubborn to purchase/use a case when you acknowledge you have had so many bad drops there is no way that anyone can feel bad for you.

If you drop your phone a lot, I'd suggest not having a smart phone. Often times the general public does not realize that smartphones are not for everyone regardless of what the marketing gurus at technology companies tell you.

They are $400-$800 handheld computers that people take for granted, clearly you seem to be one of those people.

Get a case, get some insurance through square trade or something for future incidents, go to see apple and see if they can help you.

If you don't want to protect your investment, don't cry when you drop it on the pavement 9 times and it breaks.

You're unbelievable.

I'm not trying to be an ******, i'm trying to have you understand why you are in the situation you're in. You could also just be more careful...I have never dropped or otherwise accidentally damaged any high end technology product.

You are being an ******. And an ignorant one too! You're acting like the iPhone deserves to be in better hands than a person who drops it. It's just a freaking phone... and my phone for that matter. Who really cares how mine looks like (I don't...) at the end of the day? Oh, wait. Obviously you. If I drop it, iPhone activists won't be crucifying me at Golgotha... or will they?

The iPhone is for me and I've been a happy iPhone user since the 3g and I hope you don't plan on ever starting a company or working for a reputable one (unless you don't want to be there) with a demeanor like the one you're toting. You're not teaching me a life long lesson and I'm actually interested to know the exact point of your post. Should deliberately careless or accidentally careless people not have the iPhone? Because I've had one for three years now and Skynet hasn't shot a T-1000 through time yet to kill me for mistreating technology.

I found a smart person! If only everybody thought like you... :)

This is the most ridiculous thread I have ever read on a Mac forum. Someone drops his iphone on hard surfaces eight times, and complains that it is fragile. If that wasn't silly enough, a number of posters respond warning him that this is not really a good thing to do, and that the phone would be less vulnerable if it were protected by a case. Since we are being profound, I have an even better idea—stop dropping it :D:D:D

Fool, please quote my complaining of fragile iPhone hardware, thanks.

I never complained. I never tried to pass blame.

As far as expensive devices with or without cases, I watched somebody drop an original iPad about 5 feet onto blacktop. Luckily it was cased in an Otterbox case and was fine. If this iPad survived that nasty of a drop, then the OP's phone would have survived just fine even with the 8 or 9 bad drops.

this thread has produced a measurable improvement to my mood this eve. awesome.

Yes the OP was being a little precious, but he/she is right to say it's just a phone. Time for a new one, or borrow a crap phone for a month or two and get an iPhone 5.

Surprise surprise. A bunch of Internet warriors jumping at the chance to pass judgement on another on the Internet. Not once did the OP bitch or attempt to pass on the blame. So get off your high horse and learn to actually read bunch of snobs.

@OP, I would just pay for the replacement if it's still under warranty or wait for the 5.

OK am I psychotic or is there actually a warranty for the iPhone via Apple or AT&T or whomever? I could have SWORN there was nothing like this available...

There are 3rd party insurance available that cover accidents and thefts if you are insistent on going caseless. I think those would be the most viable option for you.

there's a warranty through apple

my advice: get a replacement from apple, you may or may not have to pay 199.

After that get over yourself and get a case.

I'd get it replaced by apple. There have been cases where a genius is nice and will replace it for free if it is your first time that it has broken.

:D I can't help you with your problem. But between that post and the Grand Master Flash reference I am grinning ear to ear. Thank you. Good stuff.

Sorry your phone is busted. I finally cracked my 3GS a few weeks ago after dropping it several times. I'm just going to wait until the 5 to decide what to do. My toddler dropped it (oh my god he lets his toddler touch his iphone!) many times with no problems. But it couldn't survive falling out of my pocket. :(

I don't understand the people who think the thing is something that doesn't get dropped or occasionally gets dinged. These people probably keep the thing on a satin pillow at their iPhone shrine at home. I miss the heck out of my phone but Jesus, it's just a phone.

The OP just wants help on fixing his phone. Not a lecture about how to care for it. Lighten up people.

aww what a cute white knight you are, how long have you and the OP been a couple??

Meh, I don't like cases on my iPhone anymore. The iPhone 4 looks too good to be covered! If resale value is a concern then obviously a case is necessary. ;)

As for the OP, I would see how much it costs to get it fixed at an Apple store. If it's too much pickup a cheap phone off eBay or something and make do until iPhone 5.

I totally agree about the case, however after the 4th or 5th drop with cracks the entire phone is less structurally sound, and each resulting drop is going to cause greater damage. I would have gotten it fixed after the first one, but $200 isn't bad for a new phone.

iresQ.com is a great company, they converted my iPhone 4 from black to white like a year ago (when they first came out).

That being said, they don't use OEM parts. Not even the black ones are OEM (I emailed them about this before)..

I would go to Apple and pay the $199 to get a new phone.

I have replaced the glass on both 3gs and 4 phones. The iphone 4 has an integrated digitizer glass and LCD screen so it is 1 part. I bought the part on ebay for $55. It took me about 3 hrs because I was extra careful. You have to start from the back and take the phone completely apart, about 20 very small screws and you will need magnetized screw drivers to get them back in. I think I could do it in 1.5hr next time or 1 hr 3rd time. Replacing the battery would be easy because it's in the back and you start from the back. YOu can search youtube for video instructions.

Replacing the 3gs glass is much easier because you start from front, but battery replacement is harder which I have done twice on 3gs.

Other options are to find a local shop that will repair for around $125

If you take to apple store they will charge you $200 but just give you a new phone. My wife cracked the edge of hers and the replace for free but it also had SIM card errors and she had Apple care.
