The plastic is broken on this one on the back, worse than that. Ignoring aesthetics does it nee replacing? Is it functional?

Over time, the screen might get floppy when you push it back, and it possibly might get to the point where the laptop doesn't close properly. Just google "2008 MacBook Air broken hinge" and read how it's been for other people, I think how bad it gets varies.

I don't understand why you won't just try and take it in for free repair now. It's not like the computer needs to be on for you to show them the hinge is broken. It shouldn't matter that the keyboard and battery aren't working.

You might as well do it now. That's where the air comes out of and if the plastic breaks you will block the vents.
