iphone #3 broken

I see you put that you've ordered a replacement. I'm very interested how you get on with installing it.

Do you have any idea how the ribbon affects the phone? I mean i have about 1 or 2 copper pins missing from it (but can still lock it in place) should that affect anything?

I like you all did the same exact thing. I didn't even get to #3 and I noticed that the snappy thing was not there. I tried to finagle it...then the white thing snapped. So then I had this bright idea of pushing it together the best I could and let the weight of the iphone make the connection... well...that worked kinda. everything about the phone worked except the part of listening to the other caller with the phone up to my ear -- bluetooth, headset, speakerphone all worked fine.

Then the other day, I accidentally updated my baseband on an 8gb 3gs someone got me, so there went my replacement for a month. Btw. I am a t-mobile guy here in the states.

HOWEVER, as I was reading this thread, I opted to try it again...then as I got further down the posts, I head soldering and pins and ...oh geese. I'm f'ed again. So, like Shrek, I do my best to slide the ribbon from the screen under (or in btwn) the pins on the m'board with the help of those eye brow plucker scissor type tweezers. I think I busted one or two of the pins on the m'board (but not sure if that was from before)....I gingerly snapped #2 and #1.

I then hoped at the very least I could use it as before as, from what I can gather, you all can't even use the phone in the ways that I can -- headset, bluetooth and speaker... GUESS WHAT! Old Shrek here got it down. Now I can talk on my phone as I place it to my ear. Not sure how long this connection is going to last, but...just thought I'd share. So, here is my advice..when you've gone past the point of now return and you are ready to toss it in the garbage...channel the spirit of Shrek and see what happens.

Also, I wouldn't throw your stuff away. You all may have f'ed up your mother boards but not the screen and stuff. Far more people have cracked screens than doomed m'boards. You got an asset on your hand. List "that screen" on Craigslist...my bet is you could get anywhere in btwn 100 to 200.

Connector Clip Broken

Hi,

I have replaced my screen and LCD twice so from dismantling the phone so many times the clip on connector 3 has broken. So the ribbon looks fine and the connector looks fine but the ribbon won't stay in properly and hence the earpiece and proximity sensor don't work (hv to take all calls on speaker phone :( ).

Just wondered if anyone knows if there is a way to fix the ribbon in to the connector with doing any scarey resolder jobs?

Thanks,

Liz

white cover is somewhat off but pins are still perfectly normal

i was replacing my screen and accidentally peeled off a little of the white cover for the light sensor, i was wondering if my iphone is still going to work or if im going to need it to be repaired? again, the pins are still good and it still snugs perfectly under, it's just that the white covering is off. my main concern is if it's safe to use, like.. will there be any short circuiting etc.. anyway, i emailed hector, hope everything turns out well

Hey Harrison, just answered your email. Ive seen connectors that look like the one you linked me, and at times if the pins cross or are bent, they could definitely cause a short. You would know, because the phone would act up, screen displays white or even black, and sometimes it would not boot. Let me know about the repair. Thanks!

I seriously need help

Ok, so I too damaged the connector for wire ribbon 3 but still managed to slide ribbon in place. This happened while replacing my lcd ($23 on ebay). Now the whole reason I changed the lcd was because I dropped my phone really really hard and iphone only displayed white stripes on screen. After somewhat, successfully replacing lcd, the white lines still showed up when turning on the phone. And yes I did try rebooting the iphone. Anyone, anyone please help me and tell me what to do before I go crazy. I just really really need money and want to fix phone so I can sell it. Thank you

I used scotch tape and this ghetto method fixed the cable problem for me! Whoohoo!

I've spent a couple weeks going over this thread and some other sites while I sent in the phone to a local repair guy to see if he can fix the phone for a broken LCD. Through the process the clip on connector 3 broke (not his fault, but mine) and he didn't think he could fix this because he's never worked on this problem. I appreciate all the info and solutions Hector has done on this since I've seen details of him pop up elsewhere online. I even just e-mailed him last night to see what the cost would be if I sent him my phone from Canada.

Not being patient overnight, I took a long shot and tried to stick a piece of "thin" cardboard that someone suggested in one of the earlier postings to try and jam cable 3 into the connector with the cardboard. Even with a thinner piece of paper I don't know how he was able to get both of them in there. So I gave up on the cardboard idea and took one last shot with some Scotch tape sitting on my desk. I cut a very thin piece small enough to stick on the bottom side of cable 3 where it goes into connector 3. I used the Magic Tape from Scotch (one used for gift wrapping and not the shiny thicker one) and it helped thicken the cable. This was just thick and thin enough to slide into the connector and jam it snuggly in.

I honestly didn't think it would work, but it did. I don't know how safe it is to have this small piece of tape stuck there, but I'll take my chances with it. Therefore this is my work around solution for the broken clip.

reattaching ribbon cables 1,2,3 Iphone 3G

There seems to be some useful information in previous posts but I'm still not clear if my problem can be solved.

I opened my wife's Iphone 3G to change the battery (which I did successfully). Problem is that I opened it with too much force and ribbon cables 1,2 and 3 all came free and I can't work out how to reattach them. Is this problem fixable, if so where can I get it done and how much is it likely to cost? I am based in UK, West Sussex. Many thanks for any advice. James
