Just had it happen to me today. I noticed it when I took my phone out of my pocket after I got home from work. My sleep button has definitely lost it's spring. I suppose I will have to bribe the husband to take me to the Apple store the next day he is off. The only thing that stinks is that I just had front and back screen protectors on this one...I doubt they will replace those too :(

Apple didn't replace the phone right away like they did with some of you. They checked for water and physical damage (there were none) and they gave him a case number. I have no idea how long it'll take for them to decide what to do but I'm assuming they're going to fix the button.

My roommate just brought his phone in today with this same problem that i have as well, and my button broke almost 6 months ago and i never got it taken in. since then my screen has been cracked. there has been absolutely no water damage and this button problem happened well before all of this. what are my chances i would get this replaced?

thanks!

this happened to me on friday, i had made 2 phone calls.. pulled phone out of my pocket and pushed sleep buttoon on top to see what time it was and immediately noticed that the button was stuck. My phone had shut down as well. I was unable to turn it on, when i plugged it in it wouldnt respond. I took it to apple store, the "genius" there said that it wasn't a common issue, he said he would try to clean it for me.. so he took it to back room- then came back and said I would have to pay $200 for a replacement because the screen was cracked. --i had dropped the phone months ago but it worked %100 fine since the drop. Didnt steve jobs say something about using the same glass helicopter windshields use on the iphone4 during his keynote speech? anyway good luck trying to get a free replacement with the cracked screen/stuck button issue. my iphone4 is dead now.. fml

Interesting to see that there are about a dozen other people who had this same issue. I assume that a broken power/sleep button is still an uncommon failure on an iphone 4 yet not unheard of either.

It has been almost 6 months since I got my phone replaced and all is good yet I am still wary of this issue happening again. I recently compared my iphone 4 to a brand new iphone 4 and noticed that the new phone had a much more tactile snap when the power/sleep button was pushed. Mine still works fine but the comparison got me wondering if it will hold up for another 6-12 months.

This just happened to me 3 days ago.. made an appointment on Wed.

But what sucks is.. Mine was in perfect shape, until yesterday! I got out of my truck to put my boat on the trailer and it fell off my lap onto the concrete. It started sliding down the boat ramp towards the water. By the time I got to it, it was 2 inches in the water, I flicked it out quick with my fingers, but I also pushed down scratching the front glass. I checked the water sensor and it is still white, so I hope I am OK. But where it fell and hit was right next to the sleep button. I hope they still let me get a new one... :( Everything still works fine (besides the sleep button).

Last year with my 3GS they replaced it for free because the plastic was starting to crack by where you plug in the charger.

I have the same problem

just last night my new(2 months old) iphone 4 button got jammed. my sister has the same problem with her iphone 4. I believe this is an issue with iphone 4 i know many people with this same issue and it is not fixable, so i will have to go buy a new iphone and upload all of my other stuff on to it

Broken sleep/wake from general use.

My sleep/wake button started failing (springiness is gone) after my first 12 months. Didn't drop it. This is from general use. Fortunately, I have AppleCare on it. I'll take it in for a Genius appointment and report back.

My phone just started this yesterday. It's gotten worse over the last couple of days (it's less responsive). I went to the Apple store yesterday and they wouldn't help me since my phone is out of warranty. Any ideas?

This happened to me on Saturday took it into apple and I'm out of warranty so £130 for a new handset. Time to look at my contents insurance I think

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this has happened to me today.

It has lost it's "click"

I now have to press quite hard for my screen to unlock :(

Has anybody else had this issue?

I have the same issue with my phone. The button still works but I can't feel the "click". Unfortunately, my phone is out of warranty. I guess I just have to leave with it.

This issue has just developed on my iPhone 4 a month out of warranty.

I can't believe I'm gonna have to pay out £130 on a phone that cost me £500 13 months ago especially seeing as this issue is not isolated either.

This just happened to me. Of course out of warranty so I've torn it apart and I'm trying to see how it works. The imbedded switch is the source of the actual click, and its still working. Now I'm not quite sure why the button isn't able to press into it hard enough to generate the click..

Has anyone fixed this yourself yet? Do I need a $2 button or the $30 flex cable?

Edit: Just in case anyone comes across this with the same issue.. Its a little nub on the flex switch that falls off.

This happened to me yesterday. My iphone 4 is 90 days out of warranty. The guy at Genius Bar said I could get a replacement for $149. I am still thinking about it.

Yeah, same thing here. My phone shows no sign of wear, has zero scratches, and has never been in water. Even though I know it was out of contract, I was still surprised they didn't replace or fix it for free considering my previous excellent experiences with Apple support.

No way will I be giving them another $150 because THEY cannot make a button. I mean, it's not like I paid $300 in addition to my contract, so why should I expect quality? Oh wait...

I guess I'll just wait until my contract ends in February and then get a new Android phone.

Apple will take care of ya

Well they didn't "take care" of me. Apple wanted me to fork over $175 for their lousy iPhone4 repair which I have handled with kid gloves. It is only 18 months old. Many others have had this problem and I'm supposed to pay Apple $175 for their faulty switch? So much for the "genius bar".

Apple Ripoff

This really makes me mad. Apple KNOWS the switch is defective and they are "cashing in" by charging $149 for a replacement. This is criminal.

Apple: RESPECT YOUR CUSTOMERS Make good on the defect instead of ripping your faithful users for a $149 replacement for a phone that can't even make it 24 months.

Dissatisfied Apple Loyalist:mad:

Cool story bra

Apple will take care of u

Nope...my iPhone4 is OtterBoxed, handled with kid gloves, and it didn't even make it 15 months! Now Apple wants $149 for a replacement.

You've got to be kidding!!...THE SWITCH IS FAULTY...many failing in a few months...and APPLE has the audacity to charge $149 to rectify a faulty design.

It is LAME when an Apple product cant even make it 15 months.

Very lame.

I assume you don't have an AppleCare warranty on your phone?

So let me see if I understand this correctly:

-- You purchase new iPhone
-- You do not purchase extended warranty
-- Warranty runs out at 12 months
-- At 18 months, button breaks
-- You want Apple to cover repair/replacement for free

I do feel bad for you. I do think this is an "issue" (that they will never ever admit to) however as someone who just forked over $105 for an applecare warranty, I can't have *that* much sympathy. You had a chance to buy an extended warranty and did not do it. Why should you get the same treatment that I would get if I went in after having bought the extra warranty?

Dude....it is a JOKE when a carefully handled phone doesn't make it 15 months. Look at the number of complaints on this forum and tell me this
isn't a DEFECT. Why should we PAY for Apples defect? Bah humbug.

I said that "I do think this is an issue (that apple will never admit to)" I understand it seems to be a defective part. Unfortunately, the burden of proof lies on you to show them that it's defective and plead your case. I'm not saying that it's right, in fact, it's wrong. But that is how it is.

I didn't just buy a warranty to protect from "one-in-a-million" manufacturing defects... I bought it for things like this... Known issues that the manufacturer may not own up to. It's a shame, but Apple isn't pioneering this big-business characteristic... it's all over. If you want a company who obviously doesn't give a rodents posterior about their customers, go buy a samsung phone.

This just happened to my iphone 4 the other day as well. It was in my pocket and when I took it out the sleep button was stuck and still is.
I have kept my phone in pristine condition, no marks or anything.

My phone is 18 months old and I am worried Apple won't replace or repair it for me either after reading this topic. What a bloody disgrace. I will never ever buy extended warranty especially for a phone which I'd only use for 2-3 years before upgrading it.

I cannot believe there are people here actually backing Apple up and saying that you should have bought extended warranty to cover a manufacturing defect and that Apple make millions of phones therefore its not their fault? What an IGNORANT FOOL who said such a thing.

I am going to take my iphone 4 to Apple this week and demand for a repair/replacement free of charge. Stating that consumer protection act we have here in the United Kingdom that protects buyers from defects even after the 12 month warranty has run out.

Next time get AppleCare. Things break and it's not very expensive. It's only good for two to three years about the time most folks keep their phones.

Thanks, well so far mines only lasted 18 months since I got it on the launch date.

Next time I won't bother with the iphone. I will start researching Nokia or Blackberry phones as they have better customer service than Apple does. I guess I have learnt my lesson this time, that Apple are not really as good as they are made out to be especially in terms of their customer service.

thanks

The whole point of an extended warranty is to cover defects after the initial warranty expires. Lots and lots of folks buy AppleCare and it does cover the sort of damage you're describing. All hardware can fail, doesn't matter who makes it.

Really, where did you get that impression?
