My final post on this thread...some info: brown boxes are replacement models...at this stage in the iPad product cycle, all brown boxed replacements are brand new and used as replacements at the genius bar or AppleCare.
In a few months they will be refurbished models, but not one person on this forum will be able to tell as they are checked over/fixed by technicians and "look" new! Only the serial number will reveal they are refurbished. Based on this, nobody should ever turn their nose up at refurbs or brown boxes,,,,the standard is equal to or higher than those in retail boxes. Just because it's not in a retail box does not make it substandard in any way.

Plus....to the extremely rude thread starter....read my first posts in my stats, and see I know exactly what I am talking about....because of my job.

Actually you do have light bleed along the bottom. I can see the "spotlights" in the photo you posted.

Actually, the swap-outs at the Genius Bar would be "remanufactured" as opposed to refurbished. There is actually a difference.

The remanufactured brown box replacement will be brand new except for the recycled "guts" inside, like the main logic board, sensors, camera module, etc, unless of course any of these items were the original fault on a returned device.

The replacements all have new batteries, and new outer shells, so everything that you can see and touch on a GB replacement is brand new.

Refurbished items have the dings and scratches from the original owner, with only the faulty parts having been repaired, like on a refurbished television or something similar.

The hood
Just couldn't take the yellow bleed from my iPad 2 so I took it to the Apple Store with a little resistance from these so called geniuses. They ordered me a replacement unit on Monday and picked it up on Tuesday. It came in a brown box with my name on it. The genius dude couldn't tell me if it was refurbished or new. So I swapped it out and did some light test in my house. It looks so much better without that yellow crap leaking from the corners. If there is any bleed in the new unit it's the standard White bleed that is normal in all LCD screen which is not very noticeable. YELLOW IS NOT NORMAL don't let these people lie to you!!!. If you have yellow, replace it......I want to know if all the brown replacement boxes are the safe ones. Cause mine is...

I thought there was a way to tell if it was a refurb by way of the serial? Not positive though.

In many cases, I actually prefer the Referbished iPads.

A sibling of mine worked for Apple, and the iPad referbs go through far more testing than a "New" iPad does.

They may still have backlight bleeding, but they won't have some of the more common ailments that will get picked up in the referb process - dead pixels, button problems, bad battery, etc. So this narrows your chances down quite a bit in terms of getting a good iPad.

My Apple store just called me to inform me that my replacement is in. It's a brown box which I'm happy about. I'm even happier that the genius I talked to told me that it has been checked and it looks good. She also told me they've been checking them because they've had a quite few come through with bleeding. So all I'm hoping for is an iPad with little to no bleed that's only visible in torch mode. I pick it up tomorrow

I value your comment highly. Er hmm. Compared to my original ipad2 this "is" bleed free. The picture was posted to show the quality of current brown box replacements. I chose to post as no one else substantiated their claims. Not once did I say this replacement has issues, in fact I think I eluded to the opposite. I'm more than happy now. I don't usually bite at such cantankerous replies, but what an arse...
It's pathetic.

Hmmm....as aggravated as you are with my post, sounds like you aren't truly 'happy' with your iPad now that you've posted pictures.

Fore warning to everyone else. If you think in your mind that you have a bleed free iPad 2...enjoy it and move on. DON'T post a picture of it on this forum. Or you'll end up like this guy who thought he did, but is now depressed and aggravated again.

And for the record, your experience is hardly a large enough sample to measure the quality of brown box replacements. You must be an idiot. Either way, I could really care less...:)

Foxconn really needs to teach their employees how to do their job rather then them taking photos and leaking them onto the Internet and ofc the other point of some employees doing something else.

Lay off buddy the working conditions over there must be horrendous and they are probably being worked to death for a pittance to keep up with demand.

Well I just got back with iPad 2 #4 and it's about as bleed free as you can get. Even at 100% you need to squint to see anything. This is what I would call a perfect screen. Very happy iPad owner. Finally.

Just so you know it has to be a brown box unit. The genius just came out from back with it. It had the cellophane wrap on it. It looked factory fresh to me. I even asked and he said it's new. Not a blemish on the glass nor on the case. It looks better than the one I returned.

I'll post pics when it gets darker out.

So here is the new iPad 2 brown box edition minus a pixel.

Top is 100% ever so slight bleed. Pretty eh?

Bottom at 50%-60% where I like the brightness. Pretty cool huh?

Too bad it has to have a rogue pixel.

I had the same thing...very slight bleed on the replacement, but one dead pixel. The dead pixel is annoying because you see it all the time. Load a completely white image and make sure your white screen has uniform brightness. My white screen is slightly dimmer on the right side.

I'm thinking these brown boxes were a minor band aide to the original batch. The brown box ones have better QC with the bleed, but it still has the BLEED. Thats the problem. This is worst than antenna gate, I can't believe the media is letting Apple get away with this.

My first one had very minor bleed--barely visible, but there. Nothing that bugged me.

What DID bug me was the dust that had accumulated under the screen after less than 2 weeks of use and being kept in a zip up case when not being used. I took it in for an exchange on Saturday and got a brown box unit.

My replacement unit is bleed free. I can't post the picture of it here because I'm blocked at work, but if you go over to the big light bleed thread, I posted a picture late Saturday night on one of my comments. I didn't return my iPad 2 for the light bleed issue, but now that I have one with no light bleed, I'm glad I did it.

Don't know where you buy your refurbished items, but I never seen any with "dings" or scratches on any of mine....I think you are confusing this with the term "second hand".....remanufactured/ refurbished....stop picking holes,,,,in Apples terms they are called "refurbished". Never do they mention the term "remanufactured".....if you want to picky...

Some people get confused because AT&T will sell you a "refurbished" iPhone that they will admit may have dings or scratches on it, but is mostly cosmetically perfect.

This is not an Apple program, but an AT&T program. Apple will always give you a like new unit and it is not supposed to have cosmetic damage.

Personally, I would say it depends how bad it is and how much are you able to notice it - your call!

The (second) replacement (which was a brown box) I got has a little bleed that is very noticeable when it's displaying a black screen at high brightness in total darkness. At all other times, I haven't noticed it.
