psyched

got myself all psyched up for the iMac to come out soon - but i think the appleinsider post makes more sense - pipeline is still full of current inventory and tho i want a new imac now, i suspect it will come later this year - only 4 months till october and we'll get free OS upgrade with the new imac at that time.

edit: don't get me wrong, i'd buy an iMac next tuesday if they come out and are available that day! I've got a big video due the end of the month and the extra horsepower would be sweet... and the cash is burning a hole in my pocket! LOL

Scream with joy that you can now buy the current 17" with a severe discount? ;)

LOL I know and i probably will end up getting a sweet discount. I guess i'm simply sadden as in my community the only macs bought seem to been the 17 inch iMacs. Im afraid of Apple loosing potential switchers thats all. Hopefully we will see a new mini or something else for us not so rich buyers.

Well, I personally find nothing wrong with the white plastic.

That said, the brushed aluminium look will look fantastic, provided the chin goes!

It makes sense, the iMac will sort of look like the iPhone.

Brushed aluminum?

I don't understand. Apple doesn't have one single brushed aluminum product in their lineup. The last thing that was brushed was the TiBook. The AlBook isn't, and the screens aren't . The G5 and the Intels aren't. Does Apple call them brushed aluminum? They're not. And who would want that? In fact, Apple's latest OS eliminates all the brushed aluminum from the interface. Ugly.

Apple: Keep a 17" Mac model for Education/price leading

The 17" model is expected to be discontinued

Good I never liked the 17" iMac

Whether one personally likes the 17" iMac model or not, it has a very valid place in the Apple product lineup. IMO.

1) it is a Good Thing (tm) to have a good, all-in-one, inexpensive Mac for people on limited budgets to buy, so they don't have to end up buying a cheap Windows PC, and then getting stuck on the Windows mill for years.

2) There are many 17" iMacs in education facilities that are being well used. To dump that option, without offering a similar capable model in same low-end education pricing is just plain ridiculous (or beyond... to ludicrous).

The speakers are on the bottom, I'm sure they can fit them in there. And if they can't, I'd rather buy the speakers separate.

My one audio complaint with my current iMac G5 is with the speaker design -- putting them in the bottom to theoretically 'bounce' the sound off the desk just doesn't work in (my) real life.

So I did end up getting separate speakers placed on either side of it.
Even if it conflicts with the steve-o 'keep the front plain' philosophy, having speakers that actually direct clear sound towards the user is a good functional practice.

oh, and one more thing: the AlumiMac

... the new iMac's enclosure is descrived as "brushed aluminum" to "better match that of Apple's high-end systems as the company repositions the iMac as a more premium offering."

So will we be calling these aluminum models the ... AlumiMac ?
(or Alum-iMac ?) you read it here first... ;)

Perhaps a nice expansion-friendly Mac Pro mid tower at 899? Black anodized aluminum?? I hope so.

DIDDO!!!

I want the power of a top-spec Imac in a small box so that I can buy a 30" monitor.

Is that too much to ask????

Yes, it is.

Considering the margin Apple makes on the iMac, insisting they sell a more powerful (but screenless model), at a lower price than the iMac, doesn't make ANY business sense for Apple.

Everyone seems to want a cheap (sub-$1000) Mac minitower that is significantly more powerful than the current top of the line iMac.

Not going to happen at that price - maybe at $1899, but no chance at $899.

I am considering if to switch to an iMac or not so this would be great news as I plan to purchase an iMac if I decide to switch later this month.

I love my old G4 sunflower 20" iMac. I love the ability to adjust it into any height and angle. The current ones have that big chin and lost a lot of the positioning. I don't find them as convenient.

Hope they increase the ability to possition it.

.

Huh? Desktop parts are cheaper than laptop parts and screens aren't cheap. Apple could easily make a more powerful box for less money and keep their markup the same. Plus your logic assumes that people wanting a mid range tower will eventually cave and buy an iMac. From my perspective it prevents more people from switching than it generates sales of higher priced machines and contributes to the "Mac is too expensive" mindset.

Looks familiar...

I'd really like to see a Mac Pro update as well. I don't really consider the latest processor upgrade option as an update to the line (as you say, no updated graphics etc. etc.) so since this is a developer's conference I think this would be a great time for Apple to truly refresh the line and keep its technology current. Hell, throw a Blu Ray burner into the Mac Pro as well! ;) :D

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Maybe the real MacPro will appear at WWDC.

Apple is not going to release a mid-tower. Period.

Number one, it would probably cut in to Mac Pro sales (seriously). Number two most people who buy computers don't WANT to open their computers and mess with them. Sure, a lot of people on here want a mid-tower, but that is a huge minority compared to the total market. I think people on message boards sometimes forget that they only make up a few thousand people. There are lots of reasons why a "mid-tower" does not make sense.

The argument is always "it would be convenient so I could add stuff to it". You guys are not understanding the whole point of Macs..."built-in, not bolted on" or "it just works".

The Mac Pro is the machine they make for people who want to interchange and add stuff to. I am sorry that it is out of most people's price range, but it goes against Apple's philosophy to make a cheaper machine that is geared towards minor upgrades.

It would seriously tarnish the reputation of Macs if people had a mid tower that they were putting random stuff they bought at Wal-Mart in it and wondering why it doesn't work. People forking over the money for a Mac Pro are probably more educated about the product than someone buying a Mac Mini (the price point helps to assure that).

I know a lot of you want it so you can upgrade graphics cards, but Apple isn't going to be writing the drivers for those anyway, so what does it matter?

Not sure if this has benn said?

I'm starting to see a patten in the way that Apple is positioning it's products.
We are starting to see a more consistent approach to consumer and pro user products.

We Have the ipod Nano and the iPod

The MacBook and the MacBook Pro

Could we see the deth of the 17" iMac and possibly the deth of the Mac Mini, to be replace with the iMac and iMac Pro or iMac Nano/Mini and the iMac?

There have been many rumours of a black iMac, maybe if apple are planning to launch a lower consumer targeted iMac range the colour scheme could follow the MacBook, and the high end iMac following the MacBook Pro.

Ah, all maybe every thing's gonna be made from wood

What are you talking about?
The demand for the mid-tower is huge. There are millions of people who don't want to throw away a perfectly good 24" monitor everytime they upgrade.

Right now Apple users have the choice of a very underpowered but unique formfactor mini or a laptop that is not portable built in the form factor of an iMac.

Nothing wrong with that. But many users want a desktop system that has a separate monitor and doesn't cost 5-7 grand like a MacPro.

It has nothing to do with buying upgrade components from Wal-mart. It has a lot to do with form factor and ability to re-use monitors.
