I have the same problem. My girlfriends name is gabi, and everytime you type her name, it will come up as gabo. No matter how hard you try to push the I, the o seems to be the outcome. Haha weird.

Tried this on my phone and had the same results. Sayaka's a cool name, btw.

Also tried the "bicycle" test and there was no optimized hit area for that "e". So i'm going to venture to say it's a bug. There was another instance of this a while back but I can't remember the word. That I've seen it before makes me lean more towards the bug vote.

hah, weird!

i tried typing "gabbo" just to see what would happen... and it wouldn't let me hit the 'o'... i could only spell 'gabbi'

wtf, apple? :p

happens to me all the time. last name is LeMonds.

if you want it fixed (sorta) make sure you have her name in your address book. then spell her name 'sayaks' (the way the iphone wants it) backspace over the 's' and replace it with an 'a'. after a few times doing this to my name (apple wanted Lemonss) it now knows my name (with the proper capitalization too)

give it a shot.

This explains why it always misspells my name as Petrol before it learns it.

Definitely not a bug but supposed autocorrect feature. I wish this didn't happen.

Same result for me. Types an 's' no matter how far left I press. If I try to hold it, it just gives me all of the 's' option letters, not the 'a'.

I then used bossprefs to turn off auto-correct, and sure enough, I can type the 'a' no problem. So it's definitely in the auto-correct software. Probably for the reasons mentioned where it makes the key area bigger for certain letters. IMO, that's still stupid. They should leave a little sliver of 'a' left for when you want to type an 'a'. I can see increasing the area of probably letters, but not making it impossible to type words not in the dictionary. So, IMO, it's still a bug, because they shouldn't purposely make it impossible to type letters. They should only make it less probable that you would hit them by mistake.

All this time I thought it was my bad typing, but I've just had a friend confirm it on his iPhone too (both running 2.02). I tried it in Safari (google search box), in SMS and in Mail.

Try typing: sayaka
The last 'a' is just impossible to type the first time - the 's' key gets depressed even though my finger is nowhere near it! Mine now suggests her name as a popup auto-correction, but that's got to be the strangest bug I've seen!

Anybody else seeing it? If so I'll report it to Apple.
Thanks!

she's infamous in apple history. Pretty cool. I couldn't get it to spell correctly without bad spacing.

It happens bc as you're typing, the iPhone begins to limit the number of possible letters that can come next in your word. It makes the touch field around probable letters and improbable letters smaller. Apparantly, there's NO chance, at least in iPhone dictionary world, for your gf's name.

here is a picture that you need to see.

reset your keyboard dictionary if it doesnt work

add her name to your address book and then try to type her name

it misspells it but suggests it in the form of the auto-correct bubble

its like my situation, but not as bad...

the dictionary auto corrects my girlfriend's name of "jenn" to "kenn" all the time...

"goin to dinner with kenn"

wait, no!

I am surprised that Apple has the caps lock set to off when you first get the phone, but doesn't allow for Auto Correct on/off.

I hate the auto correct feature, or at least make it not be the space bar. You are typing away and don't realize it changed something until you proof read.

I tired and the same thing happens for me!
Strange bug indeed, you should report it to Apple!

wow, all you mac kiddies and no one but me heard about this?

they said that if you're typing a word and the last couple letters don't make a correctly spelled word, it assumes you're spelling the word wrong and increases the margin for the letters of the correctly spelled words

try to type alphanry instead of alphabet on an iPhone...

it actually helps unless you're trying to type some weird word like sayaka :)

Which further supports the fact that it's a bug. It knows Sayaka is a word in the dictionary yet doesn't let you type it. Clearly a bug. Report it!

I tend to look at the keyboard, not the text field, and check how it came out when I'm done.

I get the feeling that spellcheck has broken what I typed (by guessing wrong) more often than it has corrected typos, but I guess I might not have noticed all of the typos it fixed automatically.

I don't get the Sayaka problem, but trying typing "Alec"...it'll type "Alex".

Nevermind, I had it capitalized. My bad.

confirmed, another bug

Every time I type my name (Ed) it comes up as "Ew" .... annoying as hell. Maybe it's trying to send me a secret message "Ewwwwwwww."

But seriously, it's a common name and it's very annoying having correct every time.

works for me. and no, i did not spell sakaya wrong.

LOL ..... You didn't spell sakaya wrong ;)

But seriously people it is trying to help you. Same thing for CHLOE. It figures you're trying to spell chloroplast or something starting with "chloro". Granted, I would say Chloe is much more comon. But then again, wouldnt you use an accent if you were typing Chloé? ... Maybe cause i'm a French Major :p

Hey. You can always tell Chloe or Ed or Sayaka to change their names to Chlor, Ew, and Sayaks :D

2.0.1

I read the post right before I upgraded to 2.0.2 and the sayaka thing had the same "S" problem....its not only 2.0.2
