Funny how bugs are always things that would benefit the host and not the end user.
Even funnier, how everybody keep giving Facebook a pass on literally whatever they do. I mean Facebook brand doesn’t even have a downward dip during all the controversies. Fascinating how Facebook has controlled pretty much everybody’s mindset.

For the Facebook app to access the camera in the background, camera and microphone access must be enabled in the Settings app.

That’s not true. I do not have camera nor microphone access enabled for Facebook (I’ve double checked), and this bug keeps happening to me. After the second time, I stopped using the app and have used the site. I’ll go back to the app when I see confirmation that the latest update fixes it.

Judging by this thread seems like it’s pretty much the opposite.

Assuming it’s a bug, doesn’t seem like there’s any benefit from it, and in fact a good amount of essentially the opposite.

This thread hardly represents the real world. Just look at how many tech bloggers or youtubers criticized Facebook? Hardly any. Facebook’s own brand image didn’t budge during the election scandal.

There are more than plenty of people criticizing Facebook in the real world (or which these forums are also part of too).

They are the minority at best. Again, analysts and the stats are showing that the Facebook brand is still strong, and even the election scandal did no damage to the brand.

Don't need a label to post cringy things..

That's...not how logic works. I never emplied correlation implied causation, but fact it is you have a platform which main group is now boomers, so it is obvious also the cringe segment as of now.

Didn't mean to offend self-proclaimed non-cringe Boomers :)

Just deleted their app thanks to this report, I just needed an incident like this to do it. I use it primarily to keep in touch with my friends and classmates from university. Otherwise, the community is mostly disgusting and dumb people plague posts with pointless comments as they just read the clickbait title but not the article.

There are certainly plenty of all kinds of people in the world, but there are still plenty that don’t give Facebook a pass and usually quite a ways beyond something like that (so certainly far from hardly anyone or anything like that).

Well, it’s not like there are others who use (or used) it in a similar type of manner.

A far simpler explanation than that is it’s a layout bug which accidentally activates and displays the in-app “Facebook Camera” view which can be used to take/edit photos to share in the app. One used to be able to access it by swiping from the left in the News Feed, but it appears that they have disabled that in light of this issue. This especially makes sense given that the regular app UI is offset to the right in the provided screenshots…

Yes, lots of simple explanations, and you might well be right. However, given that Facebook tends to lie about their privacy until they are caught, I think mine has a decent chance of being right, too. There are lots of stories about how Facebook just seems to know things, and it would certainly be to their benefit to collect this information.

Facebook's app is apparently able to access the camera when the user did not grant permission. That is a security failure. Yeah FB is taking advantage of it but the security failure lies with apple.
Where does it say that? The article contradicts your “facts” and says iOS permissions can be used to deny access.

No reddit? Btw MR is infected with Astro Turfers, maybe not the best place to get all your info.
Got proof of this?

Are you saying apps access permissions are enforced by the honour system? And you are ok with this?
Fact-checking some of what is written to ensure the correct interpretation would help in this situation. It’s always advisable to fact-check both the negative and positive spin.

So the user granted camera access permissions and the user is surprised the Facebook app is accessing the camera? How dare FB do that.

So now it’s a different spin on it all suddenly? Seems like there’s a continued disconnect (intentional or otherwise) between what’s laid out in the article and related links and what is being commented on.

No, i am not an insider nor whistler blower. But it's an educated guess.

I do know its a common practice amongst corporations, Samsung was caught out doing it in the past. I know there are identified PR firms that do it. You can see obvious examples on social media such as twitter and regarding politics, Reddit The_Donald.

Lastely, check out the post history of some of the more negative users here. Occasionally you will find those who seemingly own every device, having all the problems with every one of them, are venomous against Apple, occasionally bitch slightly out of the threads context, seem hell bent on painting Apple in a negative light, even when some of the arguments are completely ridiculous. Not in all cases, but by the numbers it is likely targeted in cases. It can be easy at times to take one or two users posts in a thread and interpret it as popular consensus, thus Astro Turfing.
