FWIW, my EX490 supports port multiplier, and I presume that it's descendants in the HP MicroServer line do too. That's why you should be able to get away with the $50 4 bay JBOD enclosure I linked earlier.

Sometimes not-quite-standard is desirable, because your needs are not mainstream.

You say saturating a Gigabit link with full disk encryption. But you also have: while transcoding an H.264 stream as a simultaneous requirement, no?

Just curious. How many other PC systems have you ever specified and built? What gear runs your network now.

H264 encoding will never happen at the same time a large file transfer is occurring, or so i expect it to be highly unlikely. of course that requires a strong cpu, and i could offload that with a "smart camera", but i cant succeed in building it. My needs are pretty basic for a home server. Currently, network has a gigabit switch, three machines, Linux and Mac. It will soon include IP cameras, but I am looking at USB ones as they tend to be less expensive, but will put more load on the CPU.

Mainstream is therefore desirable as it allows for easy and low cost parts replacement.
