I speak from experience. I have both a cnn.cn CDMA back and a Mas Design Titanium CDMA back. Neither fit correctly.
And all metal backs will attenuate signal.

So aluminum back + aluminum bumper will knock out most of the signal,

Throw in some real carbon fiber and your iPhone will be pretty ..... useless.

How will an aluminum back attenuate signal when the antenna is an external band?

The aluminum/titanium backs when used with the 4S will only drop signal strength by 1 or 2 db. I have personally tested this with both a CNN.cn back and a mas design titanium one. With the new antenna design of the 4S signal loss is extremely minor. Adding a metal bumped will likely reduce the signal, but many people on this forum have reported next to nothing losses with genuine aluminum bumpers, some of the knockoffs tend to have subtle differences witch attenuate signal to an unusable level. Unless you find yourself on the brink of having no signal, while using the 4S naked, you should not have any noticeable drop in signal strength or battery life.
