Hi -

Infrequent poster here, but I regularly consume the great posts shared in macrumors!

My question is regarding old posts: is it okay to comment after years or is that considered impolite or otherwise inappropriate in this forum?

Thanks in advance for reading -

The TOS suggests that you search for an existing topic before starting a new one, to keep things organized. One should realize, though, that giving advice to someone who hasn't logged in for years won't do them much good.

It's alright. Although you might get a wisecrack reply depending on the thread and age about making a zombie post.
Some snarky replies are not thought out, as a topic several years old can easily still be relevant. However my favorites are when someone answers a question from 5 years ago, asking should I do A or B, the issue is most likely resolved long ago, but not always. And sometimes the advice is still relevant. ;)

However “bump” as a reply might be moderated,

If you are contributing info or additional/alternative solutions or thanking the OP that's generally fine.

If you are piggybacking your problem or asking for a response from the OP, then it's generally not appropriate. Make a new thread.

You might want to thank the OP or someone who replied for a solution that worked for you. But, it's possible that the person you want to thank is no longer active on the forum. That's ok though. It still lets others know that there is a solution that perhaps they have been lookin for but have not found.

Someone sent me a private message the other week asking a question about something I responded to 8 years (!!!) ago now instead of just quoting me. It can be intimidating, but I'm putting it out there that people are doing it in case you've thought about it.
