What is it with rich people liking tacky stuff like this?

It's as if they just say "Let's make something really expensive by adding gold" and do it indiscriminately. It looks like *****!

Comes with Angry Birds 24K edition, where the gold coated birds can't destroy the pigs because they keep breaking the slingshot with their weight. Also comes with a menial servant to play the game for you.

Gold-iPad

It's the pad, the pad with the Midas touch.
(Its U.I.'s touch)
Such a cold iPad
Beckons you to enter its web, world wide
Using Wifi

Golden pixels it pours in your eyes
But its Retina display can't disguise
For an Apple fan knows when they've used it
It's an add-on charge
From Dubai's
Gold-iPad
Apple fans, beware of its shell of gold
Its shell is cold…

Standing O with a vigorous golf-clap... :D

A few years back it was the fad to gold plate emblems and other metal car trim. It just stuck to the metal though an electrical current and you sort of painted on the solution. So I don't think anyone had to take it apart, and since 24k gold is far too soft they probably re-plate these all the time. It was very thin and did not last because if you polished it the gold would wear down fast. Sort of a pimp thing to impress 8th grade dropouts.

Yeah, could be done that way.

No way a to do this with a Nexus or GalaxyTab! :D

Seven Stars

I once stayed at a nine star hotel that used unicorn horn to tile the showers and used four-leaf clovers for carpeting. But that, my friends, was only the beginning...

Well, I've been a resident of Dubai for over six years and I can tell you, it's all about the bling. I'm just here to make the tax-free money so I can afford my home country one day (Canada). But having observed the life here for so long, it's amusing to hear the comments from the ignorant back in the US and Canada.

Dubai doesn't have much oil. You aren't importing oil from Dubai. Abu Dhabi, maybe. But the US is on track for energy self-sufficiency possibly in a few years. So then you can blame your own corporations for getting gouged, not the Middle East. As it is, the US only imports 15% of their oil from the ME. Most of it comes from Mexico and Canada.

I agree the gold-plated iPad is tacky. But it's only a marketing gimmick. Just like the "seven-star" rating, which is made up. (I've had dinner at the Burj al Arab, it basically looks like an Egyptian whorehouse). Believe me, there are tons of people for whom such a thing is just a trinket, a nothing. The average middle-class westerner just cannot fathom how much wealth there really is floating around. Hint: less and less of it is in the West.

btw, the whole "starving in Africa" thing is a bit dumb as well. Most African nations far surpass the West in certain things like mobile phone usage and access, for example. They just skipped the whole landline phase and use their phones for absolutely everything, for cheap. Canadians and Americans get raped by their cell phone companies in comparison.

Not all is as it appears.

I've been inside the Burj Al Arab during one of my visits to Dubai (for a 'tour' mind you - I have not spend the night there). The tour itself was approx. €100,- and offered a tour through the hotels as well as a beverage in the top floor restaurant.

So I can surely imagine this being offered to the guests there. Well, everything there is beyond .... (fill in the gap), so this is fairly ok.

Dubai is in The Middle East (which, yes, is a part of Asia).
But normally, when people refer to Asia, or the Asian countries, it is not The Middle East (nor Russia) they are referring to.

And about that gold plated iPad — they should have waited for the 5, shouldn't they.

Well those other people are wrong. Asia is Asia. And yes, they should have waited for the 5 :p

Seriously. The guests would be much better off with Nexus tablets.

Some people might point out that if you gold plate a turd, it is still a turd.

Seriously, why are you here? Do you own or even plan to own a single Apple product, or did you just come for the other news?

Maybe that's why they didn't chose a Nexus tablet.

My guess is that they just went with the most popular tablet.

I think they will have to disassemble the ipad. Aluminium oxide (which makes up the anodised layer on the surface of the iPads aluminium shell) is not conductive so it wouldn't be possible to plate it with gold electrochemically unless it had been stripped off leaving bare aluminium exposed. To strip it it needs soaking in something nasty like caustic soda or chromic acid, which wouldn't be good for the devices internals!

More likely someone is making whole new special enclosures. Like those shops that make them in red, blue etc

The first computer I used, in the late 1960's, was a timeshare using a Teletype and punched tape for memory. I learned Basic on it. The first programming class I took was Fortran. The first Apple product I bought was a //c, back in the mid 1980's.

Were you even born then?

That's not what I asked unless you're still using that //c.

Awesome

Let's not attack Dubai for creating Gold iPads please :p. The U.S. is spending Billions on War and as a result people are not only starving but dying.

I'd rather have Gold iPads then War & Destruction..

"The seven-star hotel is now giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads from Gold & Co to guests for use during their stay."

"They carry the Burj Al Arab's logo on the back and they are available for purchase in the hotel's boutique."

I'm confused...

for use during their stay.....
