I've said it too many times, but then again - it can't be repeated enough: The father of that crap keyboard, Jony Ive was a douche and I am glad he's gone. What has he done since he left? A whole lot of nothing.
Hole ... being the operative word.

My keyboard got so bad, I just had to take it in.

Ahhh... There is a catch for the replacement program. It has to be done within 4 years of purchase. I was outside that generous range.

I got 830 for a trade in on a new one. (Probably with the same keyboard)

Interesting that the Apple sales droid talked me out of buying the 13" M1 MBP. I wasn't really expecting that, but I wasn't expecting to be stuck with paying to fix a keyboard Apple acknowledged was junk.

I feel like I got a class action settlement: 'Here's a coupon off on a new one! Don't you feel special?'

It says 'Magic Keyboard'. 'Magic' as in: in 3 years it's unusable without scanning everything I've typed in for repeated and missing characters?

I was so bummed, I forgot the beer I bought at the Whole Foods. You know that has to be some heavy stuff...
Apple isn’t selling any Macs anymore with the butterfly keyboards. It’s unlikely that whatever you ended up buying will have any keyboard problems. What did you get as a replacement?

16", 2019.

They, in case you didn't hear it, Talked me out of the 13" M1 system.

The thing is that the keyboard seems to feel the same, or majorly similar (although the keys seem smaller?).

I have an older 13", and the keys almost require me to 'thump' the keys. They are really hard to press, compared to Ive's wet dream 'anorexic' keyboard. even the track pad seems much more difficult to press. My poor fingers need some physical therapy to get into shape to bang those keys. Yikes...

YES!!! The key caps ARE smaller!!! I can't catch a break at all!!!
You should have ignored the advice and gotten the M1, Pinky. Have we on MR not taught you anything after all these years? :p

The 2019 16" MBP did not have a butterfly mechanism keyboard, it had a scissor Magic keyboard. Why would you try to use the 4 year butterfly keyboard replacement extended warranty to fix it?
The 2019 16” was the replacement for the computer with the bad keyboard.

I think the colorful iMacs are a direct result of Jony being gone.

I agree but I find it strange that Cook escapes blame in many eyes. He is the head honcho and appears to have little control over what happens in the company in some areas. Or was he afraid to confront Ive? If so, why? We may never know but it could be interesting.

The 2019 MBP 16" has a "scissors" keyboard, NOT the butterfly.
If it's like the 2015 and earlier scissors keyboards, it should last a long time without problems.

As I mentioned a few days ago in another thread, there are going to be A LOT of disgruntled users in the same position as the OP before much longer.

My guess is that this is why Jony Ive is no longer at Apple...

It's a bummer your MBP was out of the 4yr period for the keyboard service program - I used the program on my 2016 13" MBP last year before my 4 years from purchase date was up, and fortunately it was a smooth process and I got a new battery out of it too.

Curious that they talked you out of the 13" M1 MBP, and instead into the 16" Intel MBP which will soon be replaced by a new model (announced potentially as early as a few weeks at WWDC).

What was the rationale the salesperson gave you to not go with the 13" M1 MBP? Does your workflow require an Intel model because of your workflow (eg. run Windows VMs?)?

which machine broke down? 2016?

The larger 16" is so overpriced so likely have higher profit margins - hence the push. Plus they are itching to pawn off all the overheating intel stock before bringing in the super fast M based macbooks

If it’s brand new, the lag could be caused by indexing. Leave it plugged in and on for a few nights, it should finish indexing.

Hmm. What does activity monitor say? Which model did you get (I7, i9, which graphics card)? Which version of OS are you running? When I was doing taxes on my 2015, I also had some crazy lag on the calculator app. I wonder if it’s not optimized for Big Sur?
