Thank you for the good read. ;)

Now I understand where you are coming from. I find the 13'' to be a perfect size for people that aren't A) into gaming, and B) working on 'creative' projects [Photoshop, Logic Pro, etc]. But either way, for a student, that screen is great for reading documents/papers.
I have astigmatism, so I don't have the greatest vision. But I can see the words on a rMBP very well. I sit two feet away from my iMac, and the words can end up a little blurry at times. And note, this is WITH glasses on, it's worse without glasses of course. :p

And I do most of my gaming on my PS3... But I want to explore more into PC gaming since I had Steam for 3 years and yet have not purchased one game yet... Because most of them are for PC.

Mind if I ask what you are studying in Italy? I would love to do that once I'm done with the first 4 years of college, study abroad.

PM sent.

I've been limping along on my late-2008 MacBook waiting for Haswell. Today, I finally priced the new Macbook Air (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD): $1400.

Then tonight I checked the refurb Macs. Original 15-inch rMBP (2.3GHz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD): $1600.

Bought the rMBP without a second thought. What a ridiculous deal. Now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping I don't get stuck with a ghosting LG panel.

Yes that is a great buy! :] I hope you enjoy and if you do have any problems, Apple's got your back! :apple: [hopefully!]

buying now would be bad move, because I see it being announced in October with the iPhone and iPad

That is only a bad move if you don't need the computer now. If you buy a computer when you need it, you will always buy at the right time.

Coupled with that, the mid 2012 refurb pricing is some of the best refurb pricing I think I've ever seen. If you need a computer now and are on a budget, it seems like perfect time to buy.

buying in october would be a bad move, because I see rockwell being announced for next june, but buying by that time would still be a bad move since pelican lake will be announced for next... The loop never ends, so if and only if necessary, just get something that fits your needs and pocket...

Don't ruin you parents, but if you do so by whining everyday about how cool would be the haswell rmbp with its 16gb ram, 768gb flash disk, and 12h battery compared to the ugly laggy bastard ivy bridge, then you'll have to kiss your parents' head every morning because they work hard to get that money and will give it away in matters of seconds to apple...

I bought my refurb without waiting, I had a hunch that they wouldn't be announcing the new MBPs at WWDC.

So far so good, and I haven't regretted my decision yet. I will admit I was hoping for a June announcement so I could maybe see a price drop on my machine and price match it. At $1600 it was still a steal!

There were refurb price drops just recently. I purchased my refurb in late April and in late May there was a price drop in Australia (10% or so) and apple kindly refunded me outside of the price guarantee. I think the US price drops were more recent that that?

Don't forget about the Back to School promo that Apple runs--usually starting in June/July if I'm not mistaken. If you can hold off a little longer, you could get a nice deal, or some freebies, when it's taking place.

I've been using my mac for 4 years (5 on september), it's an alluminum MacBook (not pro), and actually it works pretty well. It came with Leopard, then upgraded to snow leopard, lion, and mtn lion. As I said, it still works fine, but i'm kinda tired of it. Everytime i'm with friends that own a macbook pro or a macbook air, I see how fast and smooth they work, and I already want to have a computer that works as well as theirs.

Weeks ago, I was browsing apple's webpage and got REALLY interested on the rMBP, mainly because of the retina screen, the SSD and the HDMI port.

I knew WWDC was coming so I waited. As we all know, there was no new rMBP.

My question's obviously the same. Should I or shouldn't I?

I "can't" wait anymore, i'm TIRED, but, do you think it's worth the waiting?
The actual rMBP and the one coming out on october/november ( November because I live in mexico and they take a little more to arrive) are WAY BETTER than the one I have.

What would you do if you would be me?

I may be tired, but the one coming could be better than the actual one...

I don't know what to do ):

Current rMBP is basically outdated tech now that's it is over an year old

Don't buy unless you 100% have to have it this second

I waited for WWDC, not waiting any more. Just ordered the 15in from Macmall. $500 off thru end of June and no sales tax. If you think about it, it's not worth waiting as whatever you buy will not be the latest and greatest after 6-12 months anyway. It's the price of progress. I've bought the wife and kids MacBooks, but this is the first for me since the PowerBook 3400 with PPC 603e, the fastest laptop of its day. I think I've waited long enough for a new one.....

¿Qué pasa wey? :)

Patience is wise, but as you already know, in computer hardware world every release is better than the older one. According to Moore's law, the computational power is doubled every 18 months. So, no matter when you buy, your laptop will get gradually obsoleted by new releases.

The thing that really matters, which unfortunately most of the mortals do not care since they want the latest and want to be the coolest, is that the computer you buy should fulfill your needs but without ruining your pocket. So, the key of assertiveness in your buying choice is to find a balance between your real requirements, usage, and the bucks you want to spend. For instance, there is no balance if you buy the most powerful rMBP (2.8Ghz, 16GB RAM, 768GB disk) and use it sporadically for reading emails and surfing the web. On the other, you would be short if you buy a 2.5Ghz 13" rMBP for for doing intensive CAD and 3D modeling...

My advice: Use the visualization techniques and imagine yourself when, what and how you'll be using your laptop. This will help you to take the final decision and assume it

Hasta la vista!

Gotta have 802.11ac. Just bought a NAS and 802.11ac would complement it well. Maybe I'll go ahead and get the new AirPort Extreme; maybe that will tide me over for a while.

Oh wow guys! Went off to see the PS4 Conference and this thread is booming with responses!

Just to let you all know. Yes, I do need this computer *now*. I'm going to college in late August and we are required to have MBP's [Graphic Design Student]. Waiting until October isn't really a choice for me. I am patient, and if it wasn't required, I would wait. Heck, if I had a Macbook currently, I wouldn't mind waiting! But I can not really wait until then.

I shall see what the Back to School Promo shall show. I'm not sure if it's the same $100 iTunes Gift Card or if we'll see a iPad Mini ( Pft, Doubt this but hey... Maybe they shall pity the students that have to buy 1 year old technology. )

FYI, refurbished Macs don't qualify for the Back to School promos... that's why I didn't wait.

I was also disappointed that no new MBPs were announced. If I can hazard a guess. I would imagine that is probably due to constraints getting enough higher end haswell chips.

However the 13" MBAs look great and should provide a reasonable option to those considering a 13" MBP. Even though I was looking for a quadcore workhorse I may grab an air myself as a more portable option.

Yes, fairly disappointed this afternoon with no new rMBP's but it's not the end of the world. In the end we shall all get a great product! ^ ^

And I agree, the 13'' MBA's are an option for those that were interested in a Haswell 13'' MBP. The only thing is, that the MBA doesn't have Retina. But if you don't care about screen resolution, then it's the perfect computer for you.

I'm a student and need a computer by end of August but I'll wait. The old rmbps have problems and are underpowered.

The biggest factor to consider is the cost. There may be a price drop in a few months.

Haswell is better, but most people, including most of the people who say they 'need' Haswell most likely don't and are blinded by marketing.

It's much better to have the latest technology but it's hardly essential. Who uses their phone to its potential? Hardly anyone, who uses 16gb ram? Hardly anyone.

If you can wait you should, but the latest technology really is lost on 99% of users. It's beneficial to upgrade every 2-3 generations. Unless you can really justify your reasons for upgrading at every generation you're wasting money.

The 2013 rMBP is a better machine than the Air. If you need a laptop now and were waiting to get the Haswell rMBP and opted for the Air you've wasted your money. You might as well have got the rMBP or waited.

But hey, its your money.

16GB RAM = lesser paging + better performance
lesser paging = fewer writes to SSD = longer SSD lifespan
( a lot of people actually missed this part...IMO )

Haswell = better battery life + better performance

i'm looking forward to battery life improvement on the Haswell, MBA shows 3 hour improvement, if you can even get half of it IRL scenarios for MBP i would jump off from my chair :)

But yeah i do agree that most people "want" but not many "need"

You're right in the sense that of course you will be better off with more of anything.

But my PC has 8GB and I can leave Reaper running, have Spotify on, Skype, Steam, Origin, Chrome be playing BF3 etc and be on 6GB RAM and macs are supposed to be much better for power and memory consumption.

Gone are the days where I need to upgrade at every update. It's moronic. Buy the current rMBP and it'll be current for 5 months, wait for the new one and it'll be current for 6 months. It's a futile exercise.

If you're a computer enthusiastic and want to test new hardware with software, run extensive stress tests etc then that's cool. That's different, or if you're really going to use it. But me? I am always near a plug and the current machine will be good for me for a good few years.

The price may drop later in the months. But if I keep waiting for these magical things to happen, then I won't have a computer for college... I would like to have Haswell so I don't have to worry about upgrading my laptop when I get out of college. But if I can't, then it's not the end of the world for me.

People are saying how Apple shall do a silent update with the rMBP's later this month. Would they really do that, or is that all speculation?
