People are saying how Apple shall do a silent update with the rMBP's later this month. Would they really do that, or is that all speculation?
I think that is baseless speculation. The next retina update will be significant enough to launch at an event. Besides, the retina line only received a silent very minor speed boost three months ago?

The current retinas are great computers for today and you can get 16GB with a custom order so if you need that, it is an option.

For me the most exciting things about Haswell are the possibility of extra RAM (unlikely) and storage included in the price, and longer battery life. Right now I don't feel like my mid 2012 retina is old tech or struggling. Occasionally when I let a photoshop file blow out in size I feel the limitations of 8GB of RAM but as said before, you can get 16GB on the current models if you purchase new. The only thing that could make me regret not waiting is if they make RAM user serviceable again on the new model, and we all know that won't happen.

:] Okay, I had a feeling that it was just pure speculation but I wanted to double check.

I wish I could play the waiting game with you guys! I'm a girl that likes the newest tech, so it sucks that I won't be getting it. But I know in the end I'll be getting a awesome notebook! And yes, 16gb of RAM is a must for me, since I can't change it, I want to make sure that I won't have to deal with any slowdowns.

Right now I am thinking on buying a Macbook Air because, on a second thought, I realized that I don't really need a rMBP, the only feature that I REALLY wanted to have was the retina display, however, looking at the Air characteristics, I noticed the anti-glare display that it has, I know it's not compared to a retina, actually they play different roles, but I liked how it looked and how it works.

Also, the Air is cheaper and it has the perfect size for me (13").

I'm still planning to upgrade it as most as possible so it can last me longer.

What do you guys think?

The Air right now also have a better battery life. :) I'm not sure what you shall do one your notebook though? Is it the casual Surfing the Web, Email, Editing Photos, etc.? Because the 13'' MBA [Haswell] is a decent machine, just depends on what your needs are.

Yep I do that, and casually photoshop/illustrator, just that.

Btw, what does Haswell mean?

It's not a weight thing because, like you, I'm coming from a heavy-weight PC laptop and both the 13" and 15" are very light.

I have the 15 and the 13" version. The problem with the 15" isn't the actual weight (which is, indeed, quite low compared to most PC laptops of that size). The problem is bulk - the 15" FEELS much heavier in the backpack. I can't really tell a difference between the Macbook Air and the 13" rMBP when I'm carrying it but the 15" feels like a brick.

I totally agree - in terms of computing power, the MBA is enough. However, the screen totally sucks if you compare the two.

why does it suck?
I actually like it

I should have clarified that: once you've gotten used to a Retina display, it sucks (to you). I just can't bring myself to going back to seeing individual pixels / pixelation on the screen. I stood in front of the MBA for a good half hour yesterday and in the end found that I'd rather live with 280g of additional weight than with the low-res screen.

well...since that you'll start your college on august why don't just wait till mid-august?

the october is just mainly speculation, we'll never know what apple will do in this two months :D

 You're probably gonna hate this... But I just wanna get my hands on it now. My birthday is next week and I kinda made a deal with my grandfather to pay half of it over 6 months because, my job sucks... And I want to stay optimistic for a July refresh... But WWDC pretty much killed any kind of optimistic I had for a refresh this summer. :(

Yes....I always skip the MBA's at my local Apple Store because the screen is just lack luster... But I see they have them pretty far away from the Retinas so you can't tell the difference side by side.

The only thing that's better from the MBA is the anti-glare display, don't you think?

My macbook on a sunny day reflects all the damn light, and when I'm outside, it's really hard to see, specially if it has some dirt on it.

I still prefer the retina, but the problem is that I don't want the current version because soon it will be replaced );

The Retina Display actually has less glare than the classic MBP screens. So sitting in the sun may not be as much as a problem.

But we shall not see new rMBP's until October, and they may not even ship out until November/December. So if you want one now, then get one.

Why october? Haven't apple been keen on updating their best laptop to new tech as fast as possible in the past? (It's a question, I don't know if they have)

With the competition shipping haswell laptops I do think they will want to release them around july, they might just have had some issues with production that caused the delay.

By looking at past refresh dates of the Macbook Pro, they've been updated in these three months the most/recently; June, October, & February. Every now and then you may see a January, March, April, & November for refreshes. But never seen a July/August, not saying it isn't possible, it's just that they haven't done it in the past. [Check out the Wiki page of the MBP's refresh dates. ]

I'd like to be optimistic for a summer refresh, but at this point I don't wanna get my hopes up. October does seem more like a realistic date for a refresh though. [With Mavericks coming up this fall and a possible iMac refresh as well in October. ^ ^]

Well put it this way how often does Apple refresh in February? They did it once for the rMBP because intel had their newer CPU bumps, same way with haswell, haswell was released yes, but not IRIS yet, so Apple could just be waiting for that and this could also be the reason why BTS is delayed.

Yes! Here in the US we have to pay for the extra 2 years for AppleCare. [Wish we were like the UK] But for the base 15'' rMBP instead of paying $2.2k, I'd be paying $1,999~ So I'll save $200... But there's Notebooks in the refurbished section that have better specs and $2,100. ^ ^

The thing is, though, UK student price costs more than US student price plus AppleCare so you're fine. :)

However, there has been Air, Imac, Mac Pro and Mac-mini updates to new processors in late July in the past, so it's not out of the question that a Macbook Pro could see the same in late July even though the Macbook Pro line hasn't in the past.

My prediction is updated Macbook Pros July 24-26.

Why exactly between July 24 and July 26?

I don't expect a new rMBP within three months. They're mostly updated in april, may or june. Most likely will be a late 2013 refresh (september/october) with OS X Mavericks pre-installed for ultimate performance.

Nah, there's no reason for it to need an event. The Sandy Bridge MBP update was a pretty big one with the first quad core MBPs and the introduction of Thunderbolt and it was just done on the website.

If the update schedule happens to coincide with another event then sure they might announce them there, but it isn't worth holding them back for it. The last Mac-specific event was in 2010.

Why all the buy now, wait for haswell threads. If you need the damn thing buy it now if you don't wait. If you don't need it now but want one now you must be cashed up, so just buy the thing and sell it if the new ones are better, when ever that will be. Simple.

Dang straight!!!! A 2.7/16/768 model can be had for $1000 less than when they were launched last year.
