Buy now or wait for Apple Watch 3?

I suppose heart attacks do occur more often as you age, but how the heck did we live before the cell/smart/iPhone era? :)
To be fair: There is a reason why the average life span of people has significantly increased over the last decades. Part of it is better medical supply, especially in an emergency. Where people simply died in earlier times, because medical help was not available in time, today we have a chance to prevent death due to a sudden medical problem because of these mobile "gadgets" and quick response.

Surely middle aged people ran without safety devices just fine. We've become so dependant on these gadgets, sometimes we forget to use common sense. Run in populated areas, design looped there and back route, run with a partner.
In theory this seems to work, but it's not always as easy to plan so ideal as you make it seem.

But perhaps an Apple watch with LTE is the holy grail for runners/hikers. True emergency security without having to carry an iPhone. I just can't imagine it would have great battery life.
Music streaming will probably be another perk (or at least being marketed as such). And regarding battery life: Progress is fast on wearables. When the :apple:Watch was introduced, people were afraid of battery life as well. Turned out it can easily hold battery for a few days (depending on use ofc) and thus a lot longer than many expected. I think Apple won't introduce a cell feature on the watch until they can offer a similar battery life as today's non-cell watch. Same as with the iPads: It's always 10hrs advertised battery time.

Ended up pulling the trigger. Target sale was ending this weekend. Picked up two and saved $140. Ordered a couple chinese bands from eBay to build out the options a bit.

Here's a question to the forum...do we think the existing Series 1 and 2 will remain in Apple's product line?

My guess is if there is just a subtle upgrade (i.e. same design, longer battery life, perhaps faster/thinner), then the existing line would be killed off.

But if it's a radical new design (round face?, cellular capabilities, new sensors in bands), the existing line could be kept as a low-priced entry point.
Going by the limited past history of the AW, then series 2 will be avail for sale when S3 comes out. I think it depends on number of leftover inventory of S2 and whether Apple thinks it makes business sense to keep the manufacturing machines for S2 around. Maybe making the S3 and S2 uses the same machine or it's separate. I don't know how Apple decides. When it comes to MacBooks & iMacs they immediately pull the old generation off the shelf. I guess the old ones are sold at a discount to resellers? When S1/S2 came out it seemed Apple had abundant number of S0s. And it looked like Apple sold them off with a big discount to Best Buy etc and Apple let them sell S0s at a big discount. I should have bought one of those hugely discounted S0s just for the SS link bracelet. Oh well.

Hmm...maybe we won't see a new Apple watch this year. With those kind of sales, Apple can afford to hold off on a new model.

Tim Cook yesterday:
Sales of Apple Watch were up over 50 percent in the June quarter, and it's the number one selling smartwatch in the world by a very wide margin.

I know many want to see a Series 3 Apple Watch launch in the fall, and I'm all for it, but in reality, I don't see Apple releasing another Watch. I still think between March 2018 and June 2018 is the next likely version.

I think it depends on your use case and especially the price. I just bought an Apple Watch Series 2 Space Gray with sports band last week. It was used and had a little bump in the case and a few scratches in the screen (inevitable ones) for half the price of a new one. It sufficiently fits my use and it was at a great price so I decided not to wait.

I generally think that the starting price for the basic Apple Watch is a bit to steep for my use case and as it will grow obsolete in a few years due to the processor and battery degradation. The main reason why I wanted it was to track my sleep. Apple just bought Beddit and I am hoping they will release some new software incorporating sleep tracking in the Health app. However, for now I use a third party app. Therefore, I thought half price was good value for a Series 2 even though a Series 3 sounds very promising :)
