This. sracer, it seems you have very concisely answered the OP's question. I completely agree.

I'm guessing October announcement will be combination of 2+4 from your options with emphasis on the 'Pro' and 'Mini 4'. However, my hope is that the announcement will be 1+4 and the significantly improved Air 3 has all the rumoured 'Pro' features in a 9.7inch form factor.

I've swapped my iPad 4 with my wife (who was using my old iPad 2) so that she can get a bit more done... iOS 8 on the iPad 2 is horrendous. I barely use the iPad 2 because of that (I'm relying on my Samsung GTab Pro 8.4 for tablet use) and holding out for this next generation of iPads.

I like the idea of the Air 3 being a smaller version of the Pro. I'm not sure that I'd like a 12" iPad.

Dream scenario, Apple chuck everything they can at all three ipad sizes. Tim Cook introduces a small movie, invites Phil Schiller up on stage, who just says 'Boom'. *Drops Mic*
That would be hilariously epic.

I don't get the whole 'Apple need to rejuvenate the iPad' bit. The Air 2 is the best tablet on the market by far...the only real challenge
to it will be the Pro4 and the Win10 tablets.

I agree with your predictions otherwise...*maybe* a processor bump on the Air2, maybe a processor and ram upgrade on the Mini.

But at this point Apple needs to rejuvenate the iPad.. Releasing a insignificant upgrade to the Air 2 wouldn't do much to intrigue buyers. But I think there's gonna be a Pro line... It would really interest buyers. I think there's not much to improve on the Air 2... It will be insignificant, especially after a significant improvement over the original Air.

The Mini 3 was a huge let down and having the internals of the Air 2 will help with pushing demand for the iPads. But my scenario is...

iPad Mini 4 - same internals of Air 2
iPad Air 3 - upgraded processor.
iPad Pro - bigger screen, force touch, stylus support

I think they will add more features to the Pro line to get buyers intrigued with that model.[/QUOTE]

My point is... The iPad is declining (in terms of sales). News headlines continue to acknowledge this... I'm sure other companies would love to be in Apple's situation, because the iPad is still the leader in the tablet market.

Declining sales yes, but as the iPad 2, 3, and 4 owners (I have a 2) pass on their tablets or replace them altogether, that will make up some of the difference. And with iOS9 coming soon, that will be another reason to upgrade the older tablets.

In all, the real challenge to the iPad will be from Windows tablets coming to market.

I am considering an iPad Air 2. I can get the 128gb, Cellular for $650. Seems like a good time to buy. Thoughts?

First. What would you be doing with that particular model? And secondly... Where are you buying this at? Is it new? Refurbished? Used?

I, for one... Think 128GB is overkill... But mind you, I don't store music/movies locally on my device. I do have the 64GB which is perfectly for my use case.

But the Air 2 is a great product... If you can justify buying it, then by all means... Buy it. But my thoughts is... Make sure it's worth it for YOU.

It is new. Sometimes when I travel on long flights (10+ hours), the extra space is nice so I can load several movies...

I use a 128gb and have about 10-15gb of apps and the rest is 5-10gb of music, 1-3gb magazines and books and I fill the rest of the iPad with TV shows and Movies. I travel extensively and I usually go 3-4 trips before I replenish my TV/Movies to the iPad!

I just had my iPad Air 2 stolen and have the same issue. It looks like the iPad Air 3 will come out in September or November at regularly scheduled Apple events {typical way they roll} but who knows. I did research on the Air 3 and while it will have a faster CPU, that may not make that big of a difference. Personally I am not much of an early adopter and I plan to wait and purchase an iPad Air 2 when they go on sale after the iPad Air 3 is announced. I was perfectly happy with my last one and do not need what will likely be a minimal speed difference with shorter battery life and likely more heat. From what I read the Pro version is being released to compete with the MS Surface and personally I have little need or desire for a hybrid tablet/notebook. Bottom line the Surface is far too expensive for what amounts to a slow notebook with no integrated graphics and a crrappy keyboard {I looked at one}. I assume the pro will be the same. Also tthe faster CPU in my personal opinion will likely only be notiicable with a limited number of programs. I have owned ever model iPad that has come out and have never been overwhelmed by CPU upgrades in newer models; in fact I typically do not notice. Tablets simply cannot handle the heat of fast components. Upgrading a slow CPU with another slow CPU seems to be a marketing ploy. Even the i3, i5 ands i7's found in the Surface are not runnng at capacity due to heat concerns. Bottom line the iPad Air 2 is a fantastic tablet and I look forward to big discounts in a few months. Here is a good article on the Air 3 {plus the Pro/Plus}: http://ipadair3update.com/

Sucks that your iPad was stolen... I'd be beyond pissed if mine were stolen. But it's pointless researching a product that it's not out yet... Your better off waiting until Apple officially announces what it will be.

No one but Apple at this point knows what specs the Air 3 will have or will there even be an Air 3.. With all these rumors & speculation going around. But I remain skeptical on whether I upgrade... Since the Air 2 is such a great product. I'm anxious for iOS 9 to see what the devs do with SplitView...

I bought mine... 128gb, cellular for $656 before tax from Best Buy...

Love it but the "vibrating" speaker thing is annoying. Still deciding...

My 4th gen iPad has a crack in the screen now :( ... should I wait a few more weeks and a see if Apple releases a new iPad? I'd hate to buy something now and something new comes out 8 weeks later.

Considering this is Apple and every new version of the iPad has had roughly the same battery life, I'm questioning the shorter battery life and more heat claim. And looking at the benchmarks I found earlier for the A9X processor, I can't help but think not going for the iPad Air 3 is a huge mistake, especially at this point. It's not like we buy a new iPad every year like an iPhone. Better to get the newer device so you are looking at a longer software upgrade cycle.

That happened to me when I bought the first retina (iPad 3)- two months later the iPad 4 was released. Was not happy. Recently upgraded to iPad Air and LOvE it.

Since when is March to November only two months? I'm just kidding. I was in the same boat as I waited to trade in an iPad 2 for the 3 in July of 2012. I was certain it would be about 6 to 7 months before a new iPad would be released. I felt burned with all the upgrades and changes for the iPad 4 I actually sold the iPad 3 in Jan. of 2013 and moved to Android until the iPad Air came out.

My case, almost to the day. Was very annoyed...and the iPad 3 was (IMO) a real dog/boatanchor. I replaced it with an Air as soon as they hit the stores.

I bought an Air 2 for a killer price a month or two ago. I don't think we're likely to see an Air 3 next month but at this point I wouldn't take the chance.

.....I got myself an iPad Air 2 today in fact but then again, I only have an iPad 2, which has been chugging along quite sluggishly lately, so I feel that was a worthy upgrade.

:)

I got my Air 2 at best buy 2 weeks ago and I am loving it, I had an iPad 4th gen that I sold a little over a year ago now cause I wasn't using it enough, but now work is implementing iPads so I decided to get my own and I love having one again. I am not worried about the Air 3 if it comes out cause the Air 2 is a great device and will be a great device for years to come, but I also did mine on AT&T's next plan so I can upgrade it next year to the new one anyway.
