1) Why would you release a new OS X and not come out with any new hardware updates that take even more advantage of the new OS?

2) Does Apple just not care about this quarter and the lead up to the holiday season?

1) They did, it occurred earlier this year. From a business view, it would be a waste of money to update your offerings constantly (new ads, training, tech support etc.).

2) They do, thats what the Sept7 session is for. iPods are more commonly given as presents than Notebooks. Refreshing the whole Apple line up is too resource consuming.

In what way could they refresh their whole line though before Arrandale?

What else could they do apart from a very small processor bump/matte options on all models/SD card reader on MBP 17?

Re the OP, get your mac now, next update will be january at the absolute earliest.

people always neglect the processor speed bumps like the one in march this year...minor but an updates an update regardless...expect a minor speed bump in september or october

How much innovation is coming with the new iPod update? If a completely new iPod comes out then yes you're right, but if they are only updating the iPod line then Apple would be in trouble for this upcoming quarter.

Also, as puma1552 pointed out, a minor spec update is an update none the less. I think everyone is correct when pointing out that an extreme update (shift to Intel's new processors) won't be until next year but I think it is naive that some people think that the uMBP won't be "touched" until next year at the earliest. Business suicide, you seriously need to consider the investors and the public perception when thinking about large corporations.

It is true that Apple makes their money off of hardware sales and not software sales correct? How many "new" iPod buyers are you expecting? How many people do you expect to "update" their new iPod Touch?

The app store and iTunes certainly help "keep" Apple profitable; however, I don't think that the app store, combined with iTunes sales, and iPod sales would be enough to show an improvement over the same quarter from last year. Do you?

IIRC all the dates that would put a speed bump at october/november time. And if there is a minor speed bump it really is not worth waiting for, last time we just saw 2.53ghz upped to 2.66ghz and the low end model didn't even get a speed bump.
