You can always opt for a refurbished Macbook. Try visiting the Apple Store website and check out the section for refurbished macs; they sell 'em for only $849, and you'd get it cheaper since you're a student.

education discouts dont apply for refurb. what do you guys think about an old mbp off ebay?

I found a number of people here in the SF Bay Area who had already done
the hack and were selling "new" hackintoshes for $300. Yes, this means
you won't get to do the work yourself, but time is money . . . ;^)

I also decided the keyboard and screen combo on a hackintosh was just a bit
too small for me . . .

my area craigslist (richmond virginia) only has one and i would rather do it myself because it would be more funn

I had a Dell 10v. Easiest thing in the world to hackintosh. It was suprisingly fast with OSX. Web browsing and Word worked great. Not much more though.

ive grown up with xp on my hone pc since the week it came out (almost as long as i can rember using a computer for) and on my scholl pcs ever since we started using computers at school and i spend a crazy amont of time on the pc each day so i know where everything is in xp and find it really quick and easy to use becoz of my experience .

Does this make anyone else feel old? :p

Yep. I can recall it only bugging out once I think. You need to disable something in the Bios for sleep to work properly, and disable bluetooth.
I think legacy in the bios?
I did something there and the sleep worked.

So everything works great, as long as "everything" means half the features are disabled? ;)

Ooops, sorry, I stand corrected--I didn't know that ('coz I'm no longer a student). Hahaha! ;)

But I still suggest that you get yourself a real mac--either refurbished or off ebay. In case you're planning to buy a second hand mac, it would be best if the unit is either (1) covered by AppleCare extended warranty, or (2) is not more than a year old so that you can still have it covered by AppleCare.

I hope you can find yourself a good deal. Good luck! :)

last time i checked bluetooth was not half the features. and getting rid of bluetooth would be fine for me because the only bluetooth device i have (other than my moms car) is my ps3 mic. and i dont even play ps3 any more. its all about the xbox for me.

A G4 laptop? Which one? I'd quite like a G4 laptop just to play with. Got an old G4 quicksilver at home somewhere, and there's a G4 imac in the house I think...

Ive worked with many g4s and many netbooks. Get the netbook. With the G4 youre limited with software binaries and snow leopard is worth it. Its all about the software, not the glowing logo on the back.

i don't think i saw a single post asking what you would like to do with the computer? because this is entirely the most important decision for buying the laptop, do you need it for school, just for internet, do you need it for a special program only available on mac, what else do you use it for?

personally i need the MBP so i can run logic studio 9, and i wont mess with using a hackintosh or breaking licenses to make music, if i do that then the music is made on stolen equipment, just kinda a meh situation, but i also need the portability because i go to school aswell so i cant have a desktop. something to consider

if you just need it for school and you don't want to spend the cash and you wont go on some sort of guilt trip for piracy i think the hackintosh would be the better investment, but remember you get what you pay for, so if the thing sucks, well....

PS: gratz on raising 1200$ lol i know when i was 14 i couldn't hold onto any money

Agreed, if you just do basic stuff like web surfing, IM chat, Office/iWork, iTunes music, and some video watching (720P and up videos will suffer) a hackintoshed Dell Mini 10v would be fine, and I'd get that over a G4 laptop. Sleep works, heck even the built-in webcam works for iChat video chatting if you get a 10v with a built-in webcam (I think all of them do but check just in case).

Thanks for your response!

Oh BTW, does anyone know whether Netflix streaming would work on a hackintosh w/ Snow Leopard?

i was goona get this http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-POWERBOOK...iewItemQQptZApple_Laptops?hash=item1c1189e639

but it sold so now my options are this http://cgi.ebay.com/15-Powerbook-G4...iewItemQQptZApple_Laptops?hash=item1c11895cf8

or i could get this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/9556893.p?id=1218124800014&skuId=9556893 and hackintosh it, which is what i want to do so i can have snow leopard

i basically just check facebook and macrumors so its not like i need something super fast or anything. i currently have a dell desktop with a pentium 4 1 gig ram and a 80 gig hard drive. it has windows seven which surprisingly runs really well considering its at least five years old. so a netbook with an atom would be a step up.

ps i dont have $1200 right now if i did there would be no doubt about it i would wait for the update and buy a brand new one. i was saying that it would be really hard for me to get the money. the fact that im about to have 375 is a freaking miracle and that all revolves on me selling my current computer for what i want. im planning on putting it on craigslist for 125 and then the 20 inch moniter and keyboard/mouse for another 125. you guys think thats to much or reasonable?

only legacy USB needs to be disabled in the BIOS, and there are fixes for the bluetooth mess.

I have 10v on the way, but I can do almost anything with the Mini 9 that I can with an MB, except use Fire... Oh wait, Apple removed that feature from the MB's. :D

Seriously though, it runs a bit slower and is hopeless at playing HD video, but otherwise, a reasonably functional, cheap alternative to play with until the entire MB\MBP line is refreshed. You can do web browsing, e-mail, word processing, and the other common tasks that average users do.

NOTE: it's best to get a Mighty\Magic Mouse and Mac Bluetooth Keyboard. The trackpad and built-in keyboard get annoying after prolonged use.

haven't tried netflix yet, but standard def streaming from other sites is fine.

forget about trying HD streams.

Go the refurb route or look on craigslist for a used MB in decent condition if you don't want to buy new. Netbooks aren't very powerful and a 2 or 3 yr old MB will give you more power and bigger screen etc.

Also wait until Apple updates their lineup. It should drive the price of a refurb aluminum MBP (13") down to $900 or so.

IF you're just surfing and stuff then think about an Ipad.

The netbook has a 12.1 inch screen that's not much difference from 13.3. Why would I get an ipad? The whole point of wanting to do a hackintosh is to be able to use os x.

Everything except bluetooth worked. : ) And really worked I might add. The little guy took updates, and was really snappy. I got rid of it because in all honesty after staring at a 10 inch screen for a few hours the eye strain was unbearable. My 13" MB is like the limit for me. : ) Next I think I will get a 15" MBP after the refresh. :/
