i basically just check facebook and macrumors so its not like i need something super fast or anything. i currently have a dell desktop with a pentium 4 1 gig ram and a 80 gig hard drive. it has windows seven which surprisingly runs really well considering its at least five years old. so a netbook with an atom would be a step up.

Based on that post, netbook + linux seems the best solution to me.

An interesting thread...

I wanted to reply because I built a hackintosh some time ago, based on a MSI Wind U100, and it was a great learning experience for me and got me reading the Mac OS X Internals book. Also it got me even more hooked on using :apple: everyday in my M$ world as I used to take the hackintosh on the train to work. However in the end it was just too unreliable with frequent 'kernel panics' and boot problems. So I purchased a new shiny MBP 13" to take on the train instead :). I decommissioned the hackintosh (back to Vista) and gave it to my son.

tflournoy95, you are a smart kid and you are really keeping this thread going ;) - if you just want Facebook and MacRumours then why not just use your iPod Touch though? Just think of all of the other things that you could spend you money on...

Building a hackintosh is a great way, like the poster above said, to get to know the working of the OS, and may result in multiple techno-geek-orgasms, if that way inclined.

Like others have said, with a Macbook Pro you get a lovely computer, with a great battery, and sharp screen, and you are saved the headache/delight of having to mess with the OS every now and then.

Just keep in mind not all netbooks are as "hackintosh-friendly" as others. The Dell Mini 10v is the most compatible I believe (along with its predecessor the Mini 9). Not sure how compatible the Asus 1201HAB is that you are looking it, might want to do some research on its "hackintoshability" as buying a non-compatible netbook is a pain in the rear to try to work-around and hackintosh.

I have an Asus netbook and the whitebook in my sig and I like the experience on the whitebook much better - the only reason I mainly use the netbook is that I carry it most places for work and it would be much cheaper to replace if it was broken for any reason - or I just wouldn't replace it... it would depend on my mood the day it got broken but the 1024x600 resolution of most netbooks gets old after a while of use... and the netbooks with higher resolution still cost too much...
