Montevina platform will not be huge upgrade from SR. But Calpello with Nehalem and QuickPath should be a monster. But maybe by that time we will be talking about Sandy bridge and how it will have 4x performance of nehalem. This never ends.

Change is good..
but somewhere along the line you have to hve an MBP right?
and no TEchnology esp computers is really future prooF

My Powerbook G4 (1.25) will be 5 years-old this September. Wasn't the fastest then, and it's still doing fine. Wait as long as you can, then no longer. Whenever you buy it, you'll be really happy so don't spend too much time stressing about it.

Yeah thats the plan, thanks.

i mean if you want your computer to last a long time, then you should wait and buy the newest mac you can, as that model will be out of date after the ones preceding it.

the release of a new model/chip/case/whatever won't make your current computer slow, outdated OR self-destruct. so just buy whenever you want it.

also, if you're not into wasting money i don't know why you'd do this - "I am buying the complete top end stuff and adding 4GB Ram." and why you're buying a mac.

You misunderstood, I meant im adding the Ram MYSELF, because as your implying, Apple overcharge.

Same dilema

Blast this is a hard decision for me:

A. I could get the current MBP in a month by my birthday and have it to use ALL summer! I still love the current design.

B. Wait for the next model. What if I don't like the new design. But maybe it'll be better looking? But I don't really want an air styled design. I like the curved rectangle look of the MBPs and MBs. However, regardless of how amazing the new design may look, what about all the issues there could be. The last thing I want to do is be fixing my computer all the time in college.

I really don't think I personally will notice a performance update with Montevina and I don't think the specs will change much. People keep saying it will be thinner, but here's why I disagree:

1. Mac laptops already have heating issues. Make the thing any smaller and it'll overheat (BAD!).
2. The nvidia 8600M is about the best that can fit and the 8800M is larger and creates more heat. Apple needs to future proof itself. If they get too ahead of themselves and make every thing super thin, there will be no room for extra features. Its better to have more space for extra features, than make an already very thin laptop thinner. Honestly, anyone who thinks 1" is too thick needs to take a shopping trip through the PC isle and compare.
3. if they make it thinner, it may resemble the Air's style (all curvy and such). While the air looks amazing, on a larger laptop, all the weird curves make not look right and may make the computer look too complicated and I associate Apple's design with simple. Simple usually is better. What is it I hate about the look of every PC laptop? All the stuff. Too many designs, to busy, and too clunky. I love that when you close a MB or MBP the whole thing is symetric and smooth. Also I'd rather have a solid laptop than one that resembles a wedge from the side (slopes from 1" to .5" or something)

But its a hard decision. I don't want to buy now then see the new one and wish I'd waited. Yet if the new is nothing special, I'll wish I'd bought already.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR 2 CENTS!!!! Also does anyone have evidence for a redesign this summer. What if they wait until Nahelem. or will Nahelem premier on the Montevina Platform. Also this mumbo jumbo of the Air raising the bar for Apple's designs. HOW? THe air is a bare minimum computer. You can't create a notebook like the Air and fit the Pro's specs. So what of the air besides keyboard, magnetic latch, and bigger trackpad would they put? Make it curvier?

Also I'm quite an impatient person. For the last moth practically all I can think about is the MBP! If I wait till June I'll have wasted SO much time reading these forums.

WOW COMPLETE SUMMARY OF MY FEELINGS!

Im gonna send you a msg so check ur inbox.

im basing my comment on the newly released steve jobs march 6 event..
if there's anything "CERTAIN" right now.. it's this.
APPLE is more concentrated /working harder for the iphone and ipod touch SDK

so my fearless forecast for june.. is sunny with some clouds in the afternoon..
Seriously, i don't see a major/ dramatic upgrade for the MBP this june.
a minor BUMP in speed and hard drive is possible..
but a case redesign?
don't bet on it!

and to the OP.
please define to last 3 years.

my PC from 2001 and a powerbook that is > 4 yrs old now is still working!
they can do about 80% of the thiings i need to do in a computer.

if your going to uni, you could wait. they run that mac + iPod campaign for students around that time, so if you don't need one now i would wait.

Buy Now

Buy now...the current machines could last you much longer than three years. No one even knows if the upgrades are coming for certain in June and it could very well be the Fall or early 2009.

Pick up the new MBP now, enjoy and learn OS X over the next few months and be all set for school :apple:

Just buy now. These are great machines that have been refined and are mature technology and solid design-wise. Nothing really unexpected will happen. Jump on the Rev A train this summer and you don't know what you're getting. The macbook air is a great machine that seems solid, but let's wait 6 months to see how it holds up and what its real weaknesses are!

My experience with rev A models tells me it's better to go with the last generation of any model than to jump on the new models that comes after. I've literally spent days of my life dealing with repairs, waiting for boxes, sending boxes out, talking on the phone with Apple, arguing with geniuses etc. The less you have to deal with those sorts of things, the better and rev A hardware makes it more likely that you'll be wasting your time with issues like that.

Buy now and start enjoying your machine today! Tomorrow will take care of itself.

These are good points. A redesign, if it comes, generally entails a less reliable machine to at least some degree. Think about how long the current cases have been around and how fine tuned they are now. I am buying now for that reason - I bought my PB G4 when it was one of the last revisions, and its been rock solid, and I'm doing the same with this MBP. Plus, when you look at performance, there is no strong reason to wait for Montevina. Montevina is a chipset, not a CPU (PENRYN will continue to be the CPU) and will provide at best fairly minor performance increases over the current chipset (Santa Rosa). If you were talking about waiting for NEHELEM, the next Intel CPU, you'd have an argument, but you aren't. Toss in the fact that Apple may not even update in June (they may wait until later in the year), and if they do update, they may not redesign (redesign could be held off for Nehelem), and the reasons to wait decrease.

In closing - if you want an iPod and can afford to wait until June that makes sense, but otherwise, I don't see too much disadvantage to pulling the trigger now.

I think you, and the last few posts here have a good enough point. your right in that I might end up waiting for Fall or even 2009! The updates will only be marginal from what ive seen, and im so frustrated at my PC atm, I feel like I cant actually last till June, and thinking of July, August, SEPTEMBER makes me want to go Emo lol!

I think im gonna buy a MBP this weekend :p we'll see!

THANKS EVERYONE!

could people stop using the argument that the current MBP is solid design wise!! yeh it's good but it's not that good!! How many people moan on here with case warping!!

All hail the re-design!:apple:

You need your Mac to last three years?

That's pretty easy.

A lot of people are using PowerBooks and iBooks that are in that time frame before upgrading. The current MBP will last that long easily, the real question is will it be able to give you the performance you desire for that long. What are the system requirements for the applications you use? How does the current model stack up? The next model won't give you substantial longevity, it's not a Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo change, you just have to decide if the features that are proposed for the next release are worth waiting for. Buy now, then buy when/if Quad-Cores are released.

Good luck.

My PB 1.67ghz has lasted me 3 years and still runs strong so why wouldn't the current model last the same amount of time?

Buy now. I was in your boat back in November...deciding whether to buy or wait for the "imminent" update that most thought would happen in January (but actually happened February 26). I waited 3 days then bought. In January, I visited the forums to see all sorts of people complaining about it not being update. February was the same. Now that it's been released, there's already another "waiting for the next MBP" thread. All this time I've been very happy with my machine, and will be for years to come.

So, buy now, enjoy your machine, and be amused at all the people waiting and waiting and waiting...

I've decided to wait. This release does just seem to be a tie over, plus with intel pushing Montevina so hard on its release, new MBPs should be ready by WWDC in June. Also I've read that Apple and Microsoft are talking with sony about putting BLu-ray in future products. I'm more interested in the huge storage capacity since I won't be able to tell the difference watching a movie on a 15" screen.

It doesn't make sense to buy one now when I can still get the current model in June and I don't NEED it 3 months sooner. So I'm waiting. The MBP is long overdue for a redesign. The MB and Air are newer designs so it would make sense to bring the MBP in line with the other two. No guarantees, but a lot points to June and it just makes sense to wait.

Also, the wait is easier if you cut back on the amount of time you spend on this site. I cut back and it helped A TON!

Ah right well Goodluck on your desicion. I hit the PAY button yesterday so my desicion is done. I think half my reason was because my PC has been driving me insane recently, and i cant imagion using it until june/july (especially with current work projects to do). Blue Ray and Re-design sound nice, but don't sound likely really, I bet apple will do blue ray and re-design at the same time.

So if your current PC/MAC is good enough, yeah I would wait. This PC im using is the only PC ive ever had. Well technically it isnt because of updating parts, but you see my point. :)

Well in your case I would probably have bought now as you did.
1. I hate PCs and would have the jumped the gun to get a Mac.
2. If its hindering projects then why wait? Get it now since it sounds like you need it.

Also blu-ray isn't too big of a deal to me, in fact I really don't care much. In my case though, it jsut makes sense for ME to wait. In your case, now is best.

Have fun with your new Pro man. Macs are awesome and it'll more than last 3 years. The ibook I'm using, I've had for 4 years and still runs as fast as day 1!:)

WOW Thats great then!

Thanks a lot man. Enjoy your Mac when you get yours too!

Now I'm just waiting for April for it to arrive lol :p

I am gonna hold out until the MBP's lcd screen shoots out therapeutic gamma rays that heal breast cancer. Maybe this tuesday?
