If you hurry to use a Macbook or haven't enough money, you can buy it right now. It is a good choice. To be frank, I recommend 2nd generation Macbook.

just thought i would update this thread, i am typing this from my new space grey macbook!
Congrats, while you may have wanted to wait, your PC had other ideas.

Personally, I'm not all that sold its coming out in March. I know a lot folks are thinking the March event will include new laptops, but I think that won't occur until June - just my $.02

Thank you! Lovely little machine, would of waited for 2nd gen whenever it came out if the pc didn't give up the ghost! oh well...

Also to the people saying wait until you can afford it, I can, its just i would of rather taken advantage of the 0% offer and left the money in a nice 6% Savings account

It depends completely on your needs. I waited and waited until I couldn't wait anymore, and I am thrilled with this machine. Again it depends on your need -- will the new processor make a big difference for you. I enjoy and learn from these forums, but huge numbers of contributors write as if their needs are the DEFAULT needs. I am a writer and teacher and I put off buying this one partly because of all the criticism. That was silly. There is no comparison between this and my three year old 13 inch air. The screen is night and day, the keyboard took about three days to get used to and now it feels better (though I must add that three years old is old for an air keyboard, it just loses its spring) and I have not noticed the lack of power that many are complaining about one single bit. But I am a writer. A low power user. If your needs are greater, it is people with much greater needs not me you should be listening to.

Just received mine, love it :)

It's the base model, an 'open box' used model from B&H Photo, 'used' but comes with full warranty. It was $999 and no sales tax (presumably because it was shipped across state lines), shipping was also free. It's in gold, which I don't think I would have chosen if they had any other choices but now I have it I think it's great, way less 'in your face' than I expected.

I wouldn't have paid more at this phase in the product life cycle but for the price I think it's a pretty decent deal, I suspect it'll get superseaded fairly quickly but I expect to get at least 3 years out of it. I'm finally replacing a 2006 Mac Pro that's really showing it's age, this MacBook coupled with the CalDigit dock (when it ships!) will actually do everything I used the Mac Pro for only better and it's 40.4 pounds lighter :)

With the warranty and ultimately Apple Care there is really no downside risk. If something goes wrong, Apple will make good, or always has in my experience. You got a great deal.

Thanks! It did seem too good to pass up, exactly what I was looking for really. I did get the AppleCare, it's always seemed more likely to be needed for laptops rather than desktops.

i've got the gold one and like it a lot, though i am usually someone who gets the silver or gray stuff. a mac pro? well, it is doing a lot of good work for me now (no complaints), but i wouldn't go so far as to call it fast or powerful; then again, a 10-year-old computer ought to be showing its age by now, so i guess it is a step up. i like the weight comparison :)

If you dont need the machine now, imo I would just wait to be honest.

I bought mine recently after months of trying to decide if I should just get it now or wait until the revamp (I couldn't really wait with school starting up again). I paid for a new one because I don't like used electronics and I am looking forward to using this little laptop for school. My older Mac laptop is so heavy, so this one is perfect for toting around.

Im waiting this one out. I need a second USB port.

If you need a second USB port you should get ready to look at the new Pro and Air if indeed they are announced in a few months.

The RMB will never get a second USB port, it goes against everything the RMB is supposed to be about. That said, you can buy a simple adapter to get multiple USB ports on the RMB right now if that's something important to you:

I thought that as well, i don't think there is any chance of it getting a second usb port, or any other port. People keep comparing it with the original MBA which did get extra ports after a generation or two, but it is eight years further on now and a different world. Apple are going for less not more, you are lucky we have one usb port, one is easily enough for me and if they did put extra ports on future generations it would put me off upgrading. I like the MB for what it is, beautiful, high quality and minimalist, yet still quite powerful, what more could you want.

Just bought and received a gold MacBook Retina this week. Got a fantastic eBay deal on a new, sealed 1.2/512 for $1189- too good to pass up. I sold my 2013 MacBook Pro 13" to get it. I absolutely love everything about the new MacBook- size, display, keyboard, and the performance is fine for what I'm using it for. Don't regret buying this first generation model a bit.

Feck it, I just bought one too. It may be March for the announcement of gen 2 or it may be June or later. Pretty sure all it will get is a Skylake processor anyway and can't see the price falling too dramatically given the ssd and ram specs. I bought a used one from Amazon.co.uk for £759 (€1,000 / $1,080) which is being described as immaculate. I'm from Ireland so it saves me €500 (they retail for €1499 / $1650 here).

The prices of macs in Europe compared to the US is ridiculous.

I would not wait. I waited on my MBP. I have the 15 inch one from 2011! I waited and waited and waited. Not even worth to upgrade. Kept my 2011 machine and saved my money. Got the MB the other day for consumption and I refuse to wait for the new one. This is not my main machine. :D

The other posters got it right; there is no indication that Apple will update this product so quickly nor is there a significant enough boost in performance to make the wait or the price worthwhile.

Remember that even though this product was announced in April you couldn't walk into an Apple Store and find every configuration and every color in stock until August which was only four months ago. The supply chain was all about the iPhone and the Watch, the MacBook literally trickled into stores.

I believe firmly that a new MacBook Pro and potentially a new MacBook Air will be announced and released before anything is updated on the 12" MacBook. Apple has higher priorities in it's notebook division and frankly the 12" MacBook isn't built for someone who cares about processors or the one that is in it currently wouldn't have a spec of a model from 2005.

you got flawed logic here about availability of the MacBook. Now if you really think about it again Retina macbook was a first gen product, a new one, thats why you coudnt buy it for a few months since official release.

Now its a whole different story, all the problems and manufacturing delays been sorted, process going well, and update just required a new CPU,(maybe a new HD camera (my wishful thinking)

Now you realise you are way off with your post, i hope.

Not at all.

In light of the news that the new Pro and Air are coming and that they do not seem to be part of the March event, I think I am more right than I originally imagined.

From a supply chain standpoint, the clock starts ticking when the supply chain has fully fed the retail chain with product. That did not happen until August. And with the other, more important note books seemingly getting major updates I do not believe the MacBook team spent 30 seconds on upgrading the RMB at all.

The RMB is still a brand new notebook. Barely anyone outside of the Apple universe even knows it exists, besides my own I don't think I've seen three more of them out in the wild.

And what do you think they have to do to upgrade it? Same chassis, same battery same internals, just new CPU Skylake with IGPU , they might put a faster SSD. Nothing revolutionary, just needed new components and job done :)

Biggest job was last year to get all the new parts together and to spin off supply chains for a new chassis, battery, screen etc. Now its done :)

Any change to any product requires months of design, development, materials acquisition, testing, and a myriad of other efforts and operations in a worldwide supply chain in dozens of countries.

We're not talking about making bread here.

While the chassis and other components could remain the same, Skylake requires a whole new logic board.

hey its not like its a rocket science to put a new logic borad. DELL, HP, Lenovo etc already using Skylake. Hold on, apple still testing? oh right...ok then

That wasn't my point, that it's beyond their capability, but its not a chip swap with the same socket. They have retooling costs that will inform their decision, along with other factors (existing sales, margin, competition, market saturation, etc), on when to move forward with an upgrade to Skylake.

I'd like to see it as soon as possible, I just hope the other factors support an upgrade in the near term.
