That's $600 off retail on a current model. Seems like a no brainer to me.

My thoughts exactly. You have to decide if the essentially unknown specs of the new model which is speculation and even more so in the actual performance difference is worth trading the savings of this open box one. Personally, I would have jumped on that deal the minute I found it and if you didn't someone else probably already has.

I went ahead and purchased the open box unit today. It's in perfect condition, with the box, accessories, everything. 4 cycles on the battery. Apparently it was purchased back in March according to the warranty start date, however. LG rev 1 screen, but it looks great and I'm just going to keep my eye out for any IR. If there's a problem, Apple will take care of it. I have a 60 day return period at Best Buy because I'm a Premier Silver member as well.

After negotiation and using my Reward Zone dollars, my price was $2000 + tax. Hard to beat that.

Nice price! Did you bought the extended warranty from them? I think their warranty covers more than the one sold by Apple (Apple Care).

No I didn't. I'm not really an extended warranty type of guy. I take extreme care of my stuff, and by purchasing with AMEX I'm covered by their extended warranty after the 1 yr of AppleCare is over.

True! I don't typically pay with Amex, but they do give you the 1 year on top of the manufacturer's warranty, the good thing is you don't have to register for it. Enjoy!

Yes, and the fact that they are very easy to work with and cooperative when it comes to filing a claim always sways me to make my large electronics purchases with my business AMEX.

Get a refurb from the Apple store. $1600ish. If the upgrade is good, you sell the refurb, if the upgrade is just eh, or doesn't happen, you're not stuck on a old computer.

Can you afford to wait 1-2 months? That is all it appears to be, so unless you need it NOW, I think you should wait.

You mean 3-4 months. There's been delays. We are not going to see these in June or July. It's more like August or September.

i guess its a little too late for the advice, but i would have waited. I know you say its worth it and all but 1) theres no way they will not update the rMBP. Of any laptop apple sells, the rmbp needs the upgraded CPU/GPU the most. There is still moments of lag and processor intensive tasks can still lag the computer.
2) there might have been a price drop.

Also, it seems like you use your laptops for a long time which means spending a little more money is not that much of a deal to you. Is the extra wait and spending $600 more worth the possibility that you will have to invest into a new laptop 1 year or 1 1/2 years earlier?

Personally, I would have waited because haswell is intel's "tock" of the tick-tock cycle. The cpu bump isnt whats impressive, its the GPU and battery life increases that will make the biggest difference between then and now. Since you do work that involves the GPU, having that new haswell GPU (HD5000) + 750m will make a world of difference.

But hey if youre happy with your choice then thats really all that matters!

I definitely hear what you're saying, and I thought about all that before my purchase. There's just no way I'll be able to get one of the new units at the price I just purchased this one for. Plus, if the upgrade truly is a huge deal and it's something I must have, I have a 60 day return period on the one I bought today, so that basically gives me until July 6.

Haswell delays? Screen delays? Aluminum delays? Can you be more specific?

I have a personal policy of NEVER buying any computer that's used, or the box has been opened.

Too many people I know that have ended up spending more time and money, by trying to save a little. Sometimes things are obviously wrong up front, other times it doesn't fail until some time has gone by. It's just not worth the risk for me.

You're buying a computer, which is very complex, has many things that can go wrong, and is easily mistreated by someone with no clue.

Just buy new in a sealed box. You'll be so glad you did.

so no refurbs for ya? I've never had a problem and don't know anyone personally who has had a problem with Apple store refurbs.

You really think ?! It just seems hard since apple has mostly always updated macs after WWDC.

Have neither of you read this forum lately? There has been issues with Haswell processors. In regards to the USB 3.0 I believe. Read up. There's some info here about it and it's likely we will not see the new MBP's till some time August or September.

Intel has acknowledged the problem and says their C2 revision in on track for a mid year launch. Besides, so what is a small number of USB 3 drives don't wake when the computer is woken? Very specific USB drives would have that problem.

Lol. Yes mid year for the release. So let's say June 1st is mid year. So do you really think Apple is going to get the processors on June 1st and pop them into millions of logic boards and sell on June 3rd? Lol. Come on dude.

If they are indeed released mid year, then it will take another 30-60 days for Apple to install the chips and prepare the laptops for sale/shipping.

Right. It might take 30 days according to you. June 1+30 days equals July 1. That is within my 2 month timeframe. Lolz dude. If it was August first, that's 3 months. So be it. WWDC is in 1 month and I expect computers to be making an appearence.

I understand what you are saying, but I expect the computers to be here by August-Semptember at the latest. That might mean 3-4 months rather than 1-2. Be that as it may, but my point remains the same: 3 months is not a huge amount of time to wait (also given that that time is later than most expect), and he should wait if he can.

I could see them being introduced/presented in WWDC with them shipping in late july/august. I doubt apple would hold another event or something to introduce it. Makes sense. Let everyone know its coming, whats coming, and how "amazing its going to be". Then take a month to month and half to build lots of stock then go on sale!
