Hello,

I have been thinking about upgrading my very old and outdated Ipod Touch to the newest Ipod Touch (6th generation).

There were some rumors that a new improved Ipod Touch possibly with the face ID feature would be presented at the recent Apple Event some days ago, but it didn't. Now I'm wondering if there is any chance that an Ipod Touch will be annonuced this year or if I simply should just go with the recent one? I have seen some people say that a new Ipod Touch will be released summer 18, but that's one year ahead and I don't really want to wait to upgrade if it's not something that is coming in the very near future.

What are your guys thoughts? Buy the Ipod Touch 6 or perhaps wait because a new Ipod Touch will be announced soon?

I would say that there is no chance of a new one this year (and probably next year) but, if you can wait, wait till after the October iPad event.

Let me copy and paste my old post and update:

iPod touch 5 & 6 were 1007 days apart. (Around 2 years & 7 months) 4th gen to 5th gen was 771 days. We're at 799 right now. (2 years 2 months.) Following the pattern there should be a new one in 2018 at the latest. If they want a 2 year cycle then this year.

It's tricky to predict.

The 6 will either lose OS support in 2018 or 19, so if you want more longevity (it seems as if you hold onto your Touches for a long time), then I would wait at least until the holiday season to see if Apple announces something. It doesn't make sense for Apple to have a new iPod version in the iOS 11 code if one isn't coming soon.

Well, the iPT releases are very random at this point so I wouldn't really predict anything there yet. But you could be right.

It will most likely be 2019.

IOS 11 runs well on the Touch 6 and I expect IOS 12 to run ok on a Touch 6.

I don't believe that you can go by past experiences.

The iPod Touch is now a very minor product so I believe Apple will not put any money into it until it can not run the current IOS. That will most likely occur in 2019.

Exactly my point, it's hard to predict the release of an iPod touch since they're so sporadic and inconsistent.

I hope not, Apple did release the iPod touch 6 before the 5 stopped being supported. As for the 6, I'd rather they don't wait that long, I already find performance slowing down on 11.0. I feel the latest should be speedy. Personally I could see iOS support getting dropped in 2018, 2019, or 2020, depending on how long they support the A7 & A8, and whether they drop it before the iPhone 6 or not.

What are you using the ipod for? I recently bought a cheap ipod touch gen 5 for my car. I don't plan on updating the iOS ... I just use it for offline streaming and my music library in my car without having to use my phone.

I use my 6th gen for streaming / downloading Apple music. I still use my old one for keeping Apple keynote podcasts on since I like to watch old keynotes on presentation of gear that I've decided to get later on as Apple refurbs.

My reason for going to 6th gen was how long in the tooth the A5 chip in the 5th gen was getting to be.

The longer I had put off buying a newer iPod touch, and the longer the newest one remained the 6th gen, the more concerned I got that Apple would suddenly discontinue the line completely... and there'd be a rush on to scarf up whatever was left on the shelves and I'd end up with... yeah, my 5th gen.

So I decided I can deal with my passing annoyance if Apple decides to come out with a 7th gen over the 2017-18 winter holidays and meanwhile I have already bought the 6th gen. That question still being up in the air doesn't bother me as much as it did initially. That 6th gen iPod touch is a great little machine.

I think that there may a chance that in March 2017 the iPhone SE and the iPod Touch will be updated to the A10 chip to bring it in line with the iPhone 7 and we will see the iPhone 6S removed from Apple’s new phone line-up. The iPhone 6S will continue to be sold as a refublished unit until supplies and sales for the iPhone 8 and X have stabilized and Apple will start sell the iPhone 7 as a refurbished unit but still continue to sell them new.

I believe this is a possibility because Apple will want to hedge against the possibility of a lackluster iPhone X launch either because of supply constraints or lack of interest due to the iPhone X high price.

The Touch runs IOS 11 with no issues so it's very doubtful that there will be an update. Realistically, the Touch will be able to run IOS 12 so you will not see a possible major Touch update until 6 months before IOS 13 is released (spring 2019).

If you need or want a Touch, get one now since they are cheap enough and they are a great product. If you have any concerns at all for the near future, you could always wait until the end of October for a possible iPad refresh in the vain hope that they also refresh the Touch.

I agree that the SE may get a refresh in the spring.

My hope (and it really is just a hope) is that Apple would want to update the iPod Touch in order to provide a better user experience across all of its services and its accessories. At the very least I would think they would want to upgrade it to Bluetooth 4.2.

It would be nice to see them position the iPod to be a remote control for the entire home along side the release of the HomePod.

October iPad event? There hasn't been one of those since 2014. New iPads are now being released in the spring, and spring 2018 is the earliest I would expect Apple to release an updated iPod Touch, with the possibility that the Touch may just be discontinued sometime in 2018. If your current iPod is no longer meeting your needs, don't wait. Just be aware that with an A8 chip, the iPod Touch 6 probably only has roughly 2 years of software support remaining, but depending on your use case that may be a non-issue.

What October ipad event?! Ipad pros were just updated a few months ago. Usually ipads get updated in the Spring. I have heard nothing anywhere about an ipad update this month. Although an update to the ipad mini is long overdue. Just as an update to the ipad touch is long overdue. Both havent been updated for over 2 yrs now. Which could just mean that both will be discontinued.

Would love an update to the ipod touch. I use my gen 6 as my main travel camera. I dont have an iphone. I use my ipad mini 2 and ipod touch in tandem for making and receiving calls. So i'd like an update to both. But as i wrote above, doesn't look good. Chances are both are being discontinued. We'll see.

You could be right... the stock of refurbs at Apple is sure dwindling by the day. Awhile back they even had some 128GB ones, nothing but 16GB now. Could just mean more people are figuring the line is a goner so they are scarfing up a refurb from Apple while the things are still made available.

I do wish they'd update it. More and more people like to stream music or video now that competition has made all those services better. I think Apple shouldn't fear that an updated iPod touch would cannabilize iPhone sales. Plenty of us like to have more than one mobile device and not all of them are phones. I keep my own music on my iPhone and use the iPod touch 6th gen for streaming and downloading stashes of Apple music I have liked enough to keep around for awhile. I'd love it if Apple made a 7th gen with Touch ID feature and 2 speakers... but that's probab;y a pipe dream!

My Gen 5 died last week and I just replaced it with a Gen 6. My consolation was that buying at this time meant that I was almost certain to get an iPod with iOS 10 (which is what happened). I know that lots of people are happy with iOS 11 on A8 devices, but lots of others are having major issues. I myself was not happy with how iOS 11 ran on my Mini 4 and downgraded it to 10.3.3. I don't plan to update the Gen 6 iPT. iOS 11 seems to be a crapshoot, though, so you may wind up happy.

I wouldn't bet money either way on an update to Gen 7 next year. It's just too hard to know.

........That 6th gen iPod touch is a great little machine.

Agreed. It is.

I bought one a few weeks ago (having had an intimation that my trusty iPod classic - which I have had since 2009 - might shuffle off this mortal coil - which it did) and think it is brilliant, as I couldn't conceive of a situation where I would have to suffer living without my music library.

And yes, on such matters, I'm old world. I simply want a splendid little device that plays my music, and does that very well; nothing else.

To the OP: If you think you could do with it now, buy it now.

Agreed, and in my case, also keeps my iPhone battery further up the charge scale.

Bought a Gen 6 last weekend when my Gen 5 unexpectedly died. It came out of the box on 10.3.2 and I plan to keep it there after my less than great experiences with my Mini 4 (also an A8 device) on iOS 11.

I have an Iphone 7 plus but still use my ipod touch 6, I installed IOS 11 and it still works very well. I doubt a touch 7 is coming soon
I faced a similar decision and bought ipad 6 32gb for $199. I wanted to run apple music across my ipad pro and and ipod touch and I was just having too many performance issues with gen 5. The camera is the iphone 6 camera and it is pretty good, with very good slo mo and image stabilization. I think there is a real chance this might be the last ipod touch so it made sense to spend now rather than wait. If I'm wrong--it's $200 dollar mistake--whatever

I just wanna +1 this...I recently went from a 5 to a 6 and the difference is incredible. Running ios 10 I feel like this Ipod performs better now than my iphone 6s. Love this device, the only thing missing for me is TouchID

My now nearly-dead 5th Gen is so painfully slow on iOS 9. The 6th Gen is snappy with iOS 10. Didn't have great luck with my A8-powered Mini 4 on iOS 11 so I'm going to be very slow to adopt iOS 11 on the Touch.
