I think there is no reason to wait for a better macbook.

My late 2013 13" MB is fast, slim and got enough battery time for one day.

You don´t need more speed for normal work, like office or browsing, iTunes, skype/msn/twitter/facebook etc.

If you want to play some games, yes, you can wait and you are able to play on medium instead of low.. yey..

The 13" model is only for working, surfing and stuff like that.

The CPU is perfect for that, and the battery is big enough..

..even if the next generation cost the same and got +50% CPU +50% GPU performance, doubles the volume from the battery - I don´t need this, because firefox opens already instand...

That's what I thought he was referencing. That is very different than "Intel just officially announced that Broadwell CPUs suitable for the rMBP will be in Q1 2015."

It's not an official announcement. It leaves a lot of room for speculation, which is exactly what cnet is doing. Not saying they are wrong, but I wouldn't count that as an official statement or anything definitive.

To me it says some broadwell chips will come out in 2014, others in 2015. It does not say which chips are coming when. Also, Apple has been known to get intel chips before other OEMs.

My guess, and its only my guess, is Intel will release ultra low voltage chips that could make their way into the MBA in late 2014 (ala October November).

There might be a limited stock of Broadwell chips for the MBP released around the same time but the volumes are going to be quite low. This will lead to 1 of 2 things happening on Apple's end: 1) Apple will update the rMBP in the late October range, but have very limited stock going into Christmas resulting in back orders 2) Apple waits until January and builds up a good stock going into an update, then releases a new rMBP Q1 2015.

My bet is on the later as I doubt Apple wants to be in the position of a significant backorder pushing down Q4 sales given it is one of the biggest sales seasons of the year.

After posting this, there is a 3rd possibility, it's more of an Apple and Intel colluding bit.

Intel will has enough Intel chip stock in Q4 (October/November) but only for Apple - they give Apple an 'exclusive first shot at stock,' then release it to the general masses of OEMs come January. Doesn't seem very likely to me, but I suppose weirder things have happened.

I have tried to purchase one today, the high end 15" with the GeForce 750M on Portuguese Apple store (phone) and with Apple Care. Asked the seller for some discount or any offer, and the answer was: No! No discount, no offerings... I was so surprised by this that I step back, and didn't bought anything.
This was the first time that this happened. I own several apple devices; the macs and the iPads always have some kind of discount or offering when the purchase is made by the phone line.
But not this time

Apple hardly ever offers discounts it seems. I went with B&H Photo Video as the MBPr was $150 off and they sell AppleCare for $100 off as well. They are also including a copy of Parallels and 6 months of Parallels Access for free.

but then the fact is that if you waited an extra 6 months you coudlve gotten something even better ? the wait never ends

nope, ive had this for over 8 months and couldn't be happier. I knew what i wanted, saved up and waited for a release. Now ill have a very nice computer to last me through college.

Wow and thats a discount !

This ends up being cheaper than the student discount on Apple's site, because B&H doesn't charge tax outside of NY State.

Are there any disadvantages to not buying from Apple directly? That's what I've always done, so I'm really not informed on the matter. For example, if there's a problem, it's still the normal Apple warranty, and I just bring it into the Apple store? The only downside is that I wouldn't get the $100 back to school app store card when that rolls around.

Also, do you know how long the $150 discount will last? Or is that just the permanent price they're selling it at?

There should be no disadvantages unless B&H are less careful with storing and shipping or something. The warranty and AppleCare is treated just the same as if you bought it direct from Apple. The AppleCare auto-enrolls with Apple when you checkout. Watch BestBuy and OfficeMax near the Holidays for $10-$20 off iTunes gift cards.

I have no idea how long the discount will last. The Parallels deal looks like it ends August 1st.

Are you guys talking about some specific upgrade, because according to the buyers guide on here, and I understand it's not always going to be right, we could possibly expect a refresh in a couple days...?

I've been planning on picking up a retina pro when the next update occurs, but was wondering if the current prices make this current model worth it. This week bestbuy has the 8GB Ram version on sale for 1425, combine that with the edu coupon and the movers coupon, and it ends up right around $1200.

Are the MacBook upgrades usually substantial like the phone or tablet upgrades? Will the upgrades be worth $300? Are there any big issues with the current model, that makes waiting the right thing to do? I've never owned a Mac, but have had iPhones and iPads. I don't expect to do any super heavy lifting on it, besides some iPhone app development. I have a 23 inch monitor I typically use at home, so the screen size isn't a huge deal.

Where do you find it for 1425? You talking about the 13 inch version?

That is just the statistics on the average number of days between refreshes. It doesn't take into account when hardware is available.

The 13"ers are 1235, 1425 and 1709. The 15"ers are 1899 and 2469. They're all basically 5% off retail price, not as good as the MBAs being $100 off last week but not bad. Stacked with the $150 edu coupon and the 10% movers, any of them end up being a great deal.

I'm still not following... is there something that is going to be in the next one that we don't currently have in production? Is it the broadwell processor or something?

broadwell processor will probably be out in 2015 , next update this year should just have a mini spec bump

Right, but am I incorrect in assuming the slight spec bump could be announced quite soon?

would make the most sense since back to school is starting up in a couple of weeks and on top of that if you do a minor speck bump in october its kinda pointless to release something 3-6 months later as that would only make a 90-180 day cycle; and apple isn't know for that , most of there updates are around 250 days apart so the broadwell chips would have to be released around wwdc time next year -- this is all off fassumption 🙂
