I don't really have an opinion on which computer you should buy, but I thought I would post this deal in case you hadn't seen it: https://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/1...macbooks-by-200-for-back-to-school-promotion/

So, basically, the Best Buy deal is $100 cheaper than Apple's education price. You just won't get the $100 App Store gift card. But that does mean you can get a MBP at $899 and upgrade later as needed.

I really don't have an opinion either way; although, if I were buying, I might go through Best Buy in this instance if that were the computer you wanted. The service and support will be through Apple no matter where you buy it. And always get AppleCare! You can get it any time in the first year. It's $183 for the cMBP through Apple Education. I've always found it worth it. You can mix and match and buy that through Apple later.

Thank you!

If I were to buy a cMBP and like I said when I started the thread, I mostly use Photoshop (hopefully going to learn other Adobe programs), should I upgrade to 8/750 or is the 4/500 enough?

Thank you!

That I can't say. I have the 8/750—but I didn't pay for it. You'll probably want 8 GB eventually, so it's also a question of whether you want to upgrade it yourself in the near future or not. AppleCare doesn't cover third-party memory. It's very hard for me to say since it's not my money, but I think 8 GB is kind of important . . .

Maybe someone else will chime in. I mainly just wanted to point out the deals.

Thanks for clearing that up (memory)!

My other question is.. do you guys think Apple will truly discontinue the cMBPs (non retina version)? That's my other battle right now

YES. It's not a question of "if", it's a question of "when". There's probably about 50/50 chance of them discontinuing it this year, and if they actually do keep it for another round then you can bet on it being gone in the 2014 refresh.

Are you worried that parts won't be available if it's discontinued? Having worked in the an industry filled with warranties, I can tell you that spare parts are stockpiled, and you're covered as long as the computer is covered. That can be extended for not a lot of money BTW. ;) All of the current models will be discontinued in one way or another in the next few years (see the "Waiting for Haswell" thread), and that shouldn't deter you... unless you don't want to be the guy with the old MBP, but there are lots of people with even older Macbooks still running.

You have a great point! I'm sure I can find some replacements if that happens. My main worry with whether Apple will discontinue the non retinas or not is because right now, it's at $999 (Best Buy has it for $899 after student discount), but what if I decide to wait for the Haswell refresh and they only refreshed the rMBPs? Did I miss my chance? Sure there are refurbs, but I'm back to the $1,000+ (which yeah, it's what they originally cost but money/savings are tight). I'm thinking like a college student here haha :p

Apparently, Apple is for sure putting the new mbps out in October. Well, that doubt is over with. Now, the other one is.. will the cMBP still be available?

I'm not completely sure what they will do. In my opinion it would be smart to keep the classic pro around and even update it with a fusion drive and Haswell.

Most likely Apple will keep the classic Pro the way it is with no spec bump or they will get rid of it and leave a whole in their product line.
