It's got warranty till 2011. I guess I should try contacting the guy now, right?

I think you're seriously out of touch with the market.

Even a 15.4" 2.6ghz penryn goes for $1400+ on ebay easy.

A 17" 2.6ghz penryn? $1600+ easy. $980 is INSANELY low. You can't even get a previous gen 15" 2.4ghz base model penryn for that much on ebay.

Those are good precautions but not always realistic and I'd say most people will not care enough to go through all those steps. Especially at that price, there are many other people willing to buy it if you're not. All you need is the serial number to check if it's stolen.

I sell stuff on craigslist all the time. I ignore people who are super paranoid and ask me to sign, date, or whatever - it is tedious and unnecessary as there is no way you can verify any of that information anyway. I say - just get the serial number and call to verify it is not stolen.

And BTW, you should skeptical that this deal is even still available seeing as it's been 3+ days already. Good deals in my craigslist areas are gone within a few hours.

Iunno about being out of touch, a new classic goes for what, 1400-1500? why should a used one go for more? and some of these may have had issues, I've seen them for that price all over craigslist in my area. Max of 1200 for a specifically ordered machine. Yes, this is US dollars.

A new 2.6ghz does NOT go for $1400-1500 at apple. I was actually looking into getting a refurb 2.6 ghz penryn 15.4" - it was $1799. Do some research instead of pulling numbers from thin air. Just take a look at ended ebay listings.

Also, quoted from the apple store:

Classic 15.4" MBP 2.4 (base model) new: $1599
Classic 15.4" MBP 2.5 new: $1799

Cheapest refurb 2.6ghz 17" : $2299.00

$1200? I live in the chicagoland area and there are rarely any MBP's that go under $1200 on craigslist, even the ones from 2007 (merom). The ones that go under $1200 are usually the intel 945 chipset MBP that are from 2006.

For OKC craigslist, 1200 is on the lowside. Right after I bought my uni 2.4, a girl was selling her three month old MBP for $1400, and I damned near lost my mind. They're hardly ever that cheap on CL here. Like Hondas, Macs tend to keep their resale value higher and longer than PC's. A lot of times, you'll see someone trying to sell a year old system for 2-400 less than what it cost new!

Naid- it is the Atlanta one. I really hope it's not a scam (duh). I'm gong to trycontacting the poster tonight.

honestly, the fact that it is still available after 5 days pretty much says it's most likely a scam

I think it's more of a lack of Market for high end computers right now.

In general, this does not apply to MB/MBPs - especially at that price. You need to consider that you're not the only one looking at the ad, and I am sure more than one person is aware that even if they didn't want it, you can easily flip it for $600+ profit. considering you live in atlanta and not some tiny city, it doesn't look good.

but.. definitely keep us updated.

Okay, the post got flagged. I'm also rethinking weather or not I really want a mbp. Does anyone know of a PowerBook G4 Titanium 1ghz going for cheap anywhere?
