A few years ago I was very dependent on BBM (BlackBerry Messenger). So much so, it kept me from buying the first iPhone till I tried one. Fortunately that was only about a month after the original iPhones release. After switching to the iPhone I missed BBM for awhile, but accepted that one cannot have everything.

iMessage is a lot like BBM. Excellent yet totally proprietary. As much as I like my iPhone 4S, I've not adopted iMessage so far.

It's because I live & work in a cross platform environment which uses Macs, PC's, Androids & iPhones. It's a lot of fun since I like them all. Never one to limit my choices and always eager to appreciate them all, I have absolutely no desire to compare.

By remaining open minded and curious, I've enjoyed all sorts of great computers, smartphones & other tech gear. Since release day, I've used a Samsung Note, as well as my iP4S. The note with it's robust battery is so much better than my SGSII.

My iPhone 4S with it's great notification system is everything I'd waited for.

Just about ten days ago I learned about Poynt, and began using it right away. It's a terrific cross platform App that has been adopted by nearly everyone where I work. Friends & family are using it too, it's a boon to speed and convenience.

So I'm packing up and jumping ship (like many other seasoned iPhone owners) until these things become available.

I'm with you in looking at the Note, but the sales rep suggested a smaller physical model. Skyrocket I think it was called.

Looking over the Apps to make sure if I decide to make a move I can do so without issues.

For me I just need a screen larger in size so I don't have to grab my reading glasses just to use the damn thing.

ALSO - my iPhone 4 of late has developed an annoying problem where the microphone dies and I have to drop calls because of it. Seems like there is a short that occurs up near the noise canceling microphone that is the culprit. Info on the issue is on the net.

I'll probably 'refurb' my iPhone 4 and sell it - fix the issue and replace the fronts glass/screen assay.

Quick question.

I'm looking to buy a note on CL and was wondering what the best option is to do about imessage. I have ML running on my air and imessage running on my ipad. Because i used an iphone before and many of my friends use ios, when i used my lumia 800 i would miss alot of messages. Instead of going to my phone, they would go to my laptop or ipad, which would both be at home. With me maybe going to android for a couple weeks or so, i would like to avoid missing messages so what is the best option for me? Disable imessage on both laptop and ipad?

I would go with disabling iMessage on the other devices. In many ways Apple screwed up big time on iMessage in that it is a huge pain in the rear to move away from it. It takes a while before it finally will switch over. So disable it on the other devices is the only way to force it all to txt message like you want.
Uh huh. Oh, and I'm 48, kid. You believe whatever you need to, champ, as long as it helps you sleep better at night.
I would say just ignore mbell1975 as it appears he is trolling.

I ask someone to post proof of their ridiculous battery claims no one else who owns this phone is seeing, he doesn't because of course it's not possible, I call him out and I'm trolling? Plus, this IS an iPhone forum last time I checked. Feel free to find a Note forum.

I think one way to find out is to just... do it and see.

Worst case scenario, I think you can make a Google Voice number (it's free) and tell your friends to send texts to Google Voice from now on instead. You can route Google Voice texts to any phone, so you should be able to get everything back in a jiffy.

Best advice in this thread. I use Google voice and it works very well for switching between iphone and Android. I always had imessage turned off.

Thats not what I am talking about, I am talking about actual usage. Of course it will last 14 hours or even longer hardly using it, let's see your screen time. I bet you don't even have 3 hours of usage.

Here are my screenshots from my Note. Over 15hrs off the charger too, but look at the pathetic usage time. Not even 2 hours

Correct. Disable (log off) iMessage everywhere, and the messages will be sent via SMS.

To answer your question about iMessage if they send the message as a SMS don't matter what phone you have so if let's say an iPhone is texting an android it will see that it's not an iPhone and send it as SMS simple the reason you are not getting your messegas is either they aren't being sent by a phone or they re trying to send to an email so make sure they are sending to your phone number

Odd. I'm getting between 8-9 hours of non-cartoon looking use, mix of WiFi and LTE. Not 4G. LTE.

You're really taking this whole Android/IOS thing very personally.

Apple fanboy got pwned!

Otherwise you totally failed on reading comprehension part.

Either way, don't be a sore loser/troll.

Look at my post again genius. I am not talking about idle time, USAGE time. Time USING the phone. Not time its just sitting there doing nothing

Ah.. now changing topics.

Before pretending to be a smart ass, look at your posts and others and READ for once.... genius. ;)

On-topic reply:

Just disable iMessages on everything, and get texts on your phone. iMessages is already a trouble, even when you have all Apple devices.

I agree with this. I really haven't found out how to utilize iMessage the way it's meant to be used I guess. Meaning, people only text me at my phone number, never an email address which is the only way for all messages to go to all devices. If there was some way that all the messages that are sent to me via number could make it to all three devices, then I would vest in it.

In regards to the battery complaints of the note, I'm shocked anyone would expect great results.

Let's look at the Facts:

2500 mah battery for the note.
5.3" screen
LTE radio

This right here would instinctively tell me that I will not get much life out of my phone if I use it all day. It is physically impossible for this phone to provide battery life to sustain someone for alot of actual usage time, especially for a power user. The battery is tiny! Similarly, let's look at the iPhone:

1470 mah battery
3.5" screen
3G radio.

Once again, it is apparent that the line of thought applies. I can not use my phone as much as I would like to due to battery restrictions. My iPhone barely lasts 4 hours usage time. Sure I can draw it out and turn off a bunch of things and lower the brightness, but same could be said about the Note. In order to get good battery life, I can't use my phone (AT&T helps by throttling me every month).

The problem here is not the phones, it's battery technology. You want thin phones, you get thin batteries. Thin batteries mean lower capacity, thus less usage. Go buy the 5300mah battery and I'm sure you will be alright.

What is your issue MBell? You asked for proof, and he gave it, then you bashed his proof. Just let it go. Not everyone is going to use their phone none stop for 14 hours. Again, I have a Note, and a 4S. In my daily use of the phones, I get better battery life from the Note. This isn't a bash, it's just the way it is. And again, that is based on the way I use the phone. I don't play games for 14 hours, and I don't stream for 14 hours. Most of my heavy use is phone calls, and surfing.

This is way off topic

iMessages is already a trouble, even when you have all Apple devices.
How is it a trouble? It's so convenient getting an iMessage sent directly to my iPad when my iPhone is across the room on the charger. Or even worse, having to switch devices just to send someone a message when the device I'm using is completely capable. iMessages is pretty convenient in my opinion.

The problem with iMessage is that it only works with other iPhones, so the majority of messages are still SMS. It does nothing to change the game. If they made an iMessage app for Android, BB, and WP7, then it would have been almost a game changer. Almost because it still wouldn't work with dumbphones. I know when I get an iPad, I'm going to turn it off on the iPad, as it would just make things so much more complicated. If you treat iMessage as a different/better way to do SMS, everything works. Go beyond that, and it's a nightmare.

I have recently found that my usage time on my iPhone does not match the screen on time.

I just did a restore from new but the other day I got home from an 8 hour work day and I checked and it said 6 hours of usage. There is no way I was working for only 2 hours.

After the restore I took my phone off the charger and it went right into my pocket. I looked at usage 2-3 hours later and it had 35 minutes of usage. I'm not complaining cause i was still at 100% but if there are some back ground task that count toward usage like email fetch or whatever then it's not a very fair comparison.

Dude I for sure don`t know you in reallife, but you really seem to be an unappealing guy to me.

You have a bad iPhone then. I can get 6-7 hours of use off a full charge. I couldn't even get 3 out of the Note  and unlike the other ridiculous claims, here is the proof...

Agree, making it only iPhone is pretty pointless... the only way it would work is if literally every single person owned an iphone and other apple devices (ipad etc). I too turned it off.

If they made it universal for other devices, Android, Windows, even CrapBerry then it would have been a changer, but like usual Apple instates their "restriction".

^actually it's quite old and stale. After 5 iPhones all pretty much looking and feeling the same, some of us might look elsewhere for something a little new and different.

To the OP, I think that's all you can do.

I sort of agree, I think Apple needs to change the look of the iOS a little bit, the same old icons, layout over time does get boring, however I love my iPhone, and TBH Android is the same way. It would be nice to see them redo the icons, and maybe the layout etc, give it a little change but keep the phone functioning the same way.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the topic. This is about his iMessage problem, not about the battery life of the Note.
