dude.. just go ahead and do it, it seems to me that you already made up your mind.. I hope it's not a scam. Go for it. $50, $1300... it's your money.

and by the way... this security camera thing... I've been robberies (multiple) at a starbucks and the person that was robbed asked the manager for the tape, and he said, unless the police ask him for it, he can't give it out....

so... call your local police deparment first and ask them if you can be treated as a victim of a scam or robbery if you agreed to the terms before going on with the transaction... and remember the "friend is away" thing....

sounds way dodgy... but if you decide to go ahead with the purchase (which seems to be the case) you should have a friend go with you and wait close by (with your cash) while you try the machine. If you then decide to buy it then call your friend and pay.

PS. ask your friend to wait near by, not in the shop with you

I think the minute I was told to pay in order to test the product, I would probably stop communicating with the seller. But I guess with the state of the economy, cheap seemingly reasonable deals are more colorful than red flags.

I've always met at starbucks in the outside patio area when i've sold things on craigslist. Always buy and sell in public and in daylight

I sold a computer on CL before and met buyer at Starbucks...Terrible experience. It turns out my computer was stolen a long time ago. I originally bought it from CL myself.
Well when I met the guy he takes it out and looks at serial number, once he confirms its the computer that was reported stolen all this cops just come out of nowhere and rush me. I swear people must have thought I killed somebody or something the way they sorrounded me.
They eventually sat me down and I explained to them that I bought it off some guy on CL myself and they informed me that this was a stolen computer.
Moral of the story is be careful on CL and police do actually follow up on stolen computers, trust me I know from experience:mad:

I wish the cop here deal stolen good more seriously. I called the police department just now and they don't deal with this sort of stuff unless someone is hurted .

That's completely understandable. Look, I know it's an expensive kit and all, but to actually get people involved because of a stolen laptop? I stand firmly by my opinion, I think it's ridiculous to have the police involved hunting down a computer when there are so many other things out there, but a laptop? Should I call the police because someone stole my $600 BlackBerry?

If you're going to go through with the transaction, get the sellers information so in that ODD occasion where police actually get involved (just typing it looks and sounds stupid.) you can refer back to seller, granted the info he gives you is accurate. Try to cover your tracks and you should be good.

He won't let you see it until you pay him $50? Is he out of his mind?

Tell him you're interested in buying it, but you're not paying him money to guarantee that he's not scamming you. Open it, use it, inspect it, test it, then buy it.

Usually i do the above and then ask the seller to come with me to the bank or an ATM machine(I NEVER carry that much cash on me) and then make the purchase. I simply will not risk meeting a random stranger with $1300 in my pocket attempting to buy a product that I don't even know is legitimate.

im confused by all the posts... so is the seller selling a brand new item or used? or is he passing off a used item as new??

Sort of. The first seal on the box is broken but the one wrapping the MacBook Pro isn't.

To the OP, if you're asking all these questions, have all these doubts and dude is being shady, you're chasing way too hard for a MacBook Pro which could be a scam at the end. Went through the exact thing and did a little calculation and at the end, yes it cost more for retail but you get the piece of mind in case anything goes wrong. If you think saving $1000+ after taxes is worth the risk and your doubts then just go ahead with it, but I seriously think you should look elsewhere or look at prices that are a bit higher and closer to the retail price.

Thanks for all your replies guys and gals,....

So, the guy end up selling it 1 hr before our meeting. So my hunt continue ,....

Until 2 hrs ago! Someone posted a brand new sealed for USD $1260 with a phone number.

I called and set up meeting within 1 hr,.... and here I'm typing on it!

Seals are untampered,.... checked with apple that warranty is valid and it even comes with iLife 09.

I've my 1st Mac (UMBP) 2.8 stolen,... this is 2.4 but I'll guard it with my life!

I forget how fast computer is supposed to be!!

Man you got a hell of a deal!!! I cant even find a unibody macbook for that price on craigslist!
What was his reason for selling it for that price???

Where are you located? I know in the GTA, there are a lot of MacBook's being sold between 1000-1200 BNIB on Craigslist. I was going to jump on them but decided to go with a MacBook Pro instead.

Im in Los Angeles, CA. The cheapest i've seen the mabook pro here is about $1600

Shoot, got confused with the OP post, I thought he decided to get the MacBook but he got a MacBook Pro. $1260 US approx. $1630.xx CDN which is damn good. Yeah, haven't seen one go for that low. Lowest I've seen for a MacBook Pro would be very close to retail BNIB or $2000 opened with usage. That's a very good price the OP got it at.

This sort of super good deal only is listed for about 30 min,... then they're gone,.... the secret is have CL programmed into your iPhone and check it at a 15 min interval. Best is listing with phone number,... email them,... and they're normally gone if it's a hot deal.

He said unwanted gift.

For sealed, new MBP with warranty expiring Feb 2010 at USD $1260, I almost wanted to get 13.3 MB at that priced used.
