    Hi all

I am living in the States and thinking about buying an Ipad 3 from someone, who is selling it a lot less than the Apple stores. I am still a little skeptical about the whole deal since it seems like a really good deal. Brand new and unlocked. Is it ok for me to commit?

I appreciate any input since I am not very tech savvy. Thanks

I know it is hard so thanks! It's thru Criagslist. The person is from out of the country, so he will be shipping it over. Overall, it's a gamble.

This is absolutely without a doubt a scam! Don't let your money get stolen.

As a rule of thumb, do not, I repeat do not ever use Craigslist for anything that isn't local. There are no protections. Even if you find one to buy in person on Craigslist, be very thorough. There are many stories of people scamming with "sealed" boxes that really contain just a weight, or people pulling bait and switch.

I buy and sell on Craigslist almost exclusively, so I'm not knocking it. But you just need to practice smart habits.

Craigslist is IN PERSON only. If the price is too low and they are out of the country, it is 100% a scam. Don't even think about it; you will never see the iPad.

exactly, they is no unlocked iPad.

they may not have the carrier profile you want, but you can enter the APN settings manually.

Yes, but not all are Earth's-atmosphere-compliant so you want to make sue you're getting one of those.

    Isn't that an obvious scam?

    This here is plane stupid.

I don't think trying to save money has anything to do with greed.

One small point: some iPads are indeed locked to certain providers. In Japan, for instance, iPads are locked to the Softbank network and cannot be used on any other provider's service within the country. However, iPads sold in Japan can be used on any non-Japanese network. In other words, they are locked within Japan, but unlocked outside of Japan.

The same may hold true for iPads sold in other countries, too.

I'm not saying the deal on Craigslist is legit — just that the notion that all iPads are unlocked is not entirely correct.

Maybe it is locked in Japan but why would Apple do it just in Japan and not everywhere else?

There is a recent thread here:

Showing that you just need a DoCoMo micro SIM and an iPad, to get everything working.
