Absolutely. I would not have a smartphone, if I couldn't buy an unlocked phone outright and shop for my own carrier.
....

By owning the phone outright, I can shop for the plan that best meets my needs, without having to account for how the device cost factors into everything. It's simpler and more transparent, and I can upgrade my phone when I'm ready, rather than on someone else's fixed 12-, 18-, or 24-month schedule.

Hey, I get not liking the contract, etc.

But, if you find a carrier you like, then buy the phone the best way you can, with or without a contract, plan, deal, whatever.

How many people change carriers more often than once every few years anyway?

With Tmobile, don't you just pay a monthly fee... then when the iPhone 6s comes out, you swap phones and continue paying the monthly fee for that phone.

Rinse and repeat, right? Why would you NOT do that?

I work in Hong Kong but fly home on the 18th, was hoping they would be released before then so I could buy one here as they are a lot cheaper to buy than the UK.
Will buy one outright next month when I return if that's the case, just depends what size screen though...

Can you still buy an iphone for $200 with a 2 year contract with ATT like I did with the iphone 5 two years ago? If so, would it be any cheaper to buy the iphone outright but stay with Att?

I'm currently paying around 40-50 a month as an add-on to my parents family plan, and still have unlimited data from being grandfathered in that plan since the iphone 3.

Is there any other plan where I could save more money and still have unlimited data? I have the cash to buy outright, but I want to save money in the log run, no matter the carrier. Any advice?

I'm doing the same here in the UK, i would rather buy the phone outright than have a contract and pay a monthly fee for 2 years, doing this works out at over double the amount it would cost to buy the phone outright in the first place.

Cant wait to see what :apple: announce hopefully 2 new iPhones 4.7" and the 5.5" :)

I will be buying it outright. Currently have the iPhone 4 I should be getting my money's worth if I keep the 6 this long.

Can you pay full retail via the Apple preorder/order or must you go into their store? I do not need it unlocked... Only AT&T.

Thanks

Yes you can purchase it outright with Apple preorder ... I will be buying mine outright for the first time and also staying with Att ... Just seems like the cheapest option now.

Someone in another thread mentioned you could add a line and buy subsidized, then pay the $325 ETF for that line after 14 days, saving some money over the full price. Does anyone have any thoughts on why that wouldn't work?

Wow that would seem to be be like hitting on a scratch ticket for $500 .... Not sure if they would unlock it for you ... Sounds too easy but a great idea if you can.

I'm considering it, but $700/$800 on a phone is a lot of money. I could pay off one of my CC with that money.

Pay off the CC first that interest rate can't be good.
Good advice! Thanks.
I'm sure you can find a 5s cheap somewhere.
I just got a 32GB in mint condition for $345. I'm considering joining T-Mobile so I can pay the 199/299 price for the iPhone 6, instead of paying for it outright. I'm not sure, though. I prefer not being on a contract.

I've bought subsidized iPhones since the 3 came out. Due to the backorders for the 5 two years ago, my two years is not up until maybe mid-october or early november.

I'm on ATT with the unlimited data plan.

I'm seriously considering just buying the 6 outright for $800 or whatever. I'd pay $300+ for the upgrade fee, but I think I'd get a $20/mo discount for not having a subsidized phone.

I like the idea of having carrier flexibility, but $800 is a lot for a phone, but I can afford it. Do many people actually buy the device outright, unlocked?

My carrier gives 490 off if subsidized, or 480 off a 2-year plan if you buy full price. I'm assuming AT&T is similar (450 off if subsidized, 480 off the 2 year plan if not?). So looking at hose numbers, why not? The interest you could get on the bank on that much can't be very much. You're paying the same amount either way. Just suck it up and buy it full price and enjoy your lower monthly plan.

i was going to buy outright but, the idea of just adding a line to my family plan and getting a 32GB for $300 and then paying $325 for the early termination which then sell my current 5S for the cost of the early termination
and some of my 6....it just sounds too easy and too good to be true

I buy all my phones outright.

$30 plans from T-Mobile allow you to do so.
100 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data and $35 annual unlimited calling from Skype.

I have always bought my iPhones outright, and have a Sim only phone contract. However I'm not from the US, so I'm not sure how it would work over there.

Why you want to waste your money on a phone?

iPhone 6 16gb on contract = ($199+ tax) + $40 activation + $40 (access fee) + ($325 ETF +tax)

Thats around $650-$655 once all said and done.

you need to keep the phone 30days or return the device. It's all in the service contract. I've looked into it before. it was doable back when ETFs were just $175.

Why not Next? It's like paying outright, but in 20 monthly payments at 0% interest. And if you want to trade it in for the 6S next Sept, you don't have to pay the final 8 payments.

The argument is "I want to own it, so I can sell it". Well, why pay the final 8 payments totaling $300, to be able to sell it for $300?

I got Next with my Galaxy S5 6 months ago. you need to read the contract closely. You will never own the phone until after the 20th payment. If you decide to trade it at month 12 it has to be in great condition or they won't accept it. They may force you to make an insurance claim and pay the deductible to replace it with an acceptable phone first before they accept the trade or you will just have to pay the phone off completely. Messy.

And say you want to trade sooner.. you still have to make up the difference of the remaining months. like in my case.. I have 6 months left on my galaxy before trade eligible. The reason you have to pay the remaining months is because of the money they won't be collecting either through service or subsidy. So it has to come from somewhere. Anyway you slice it you will be paying retail for the phone. Just decide how you want to pay it.

You can probably do better just selling the previous phone and paying the ETF on a 2 yr (what i used to do) or buy it out right. . Sadly the Galaxy resale is *****. And I suspect we'll see a decline in iphone value too over the next year. They are getting harder to flip now.

I'm considering buying it outright with a 0% interest credit card while i sell my old iphone 5S 32gb. then pay down the balance with the proceeds.. the rest over the next couple months. no changes to my ATT plan. Eventually sell my galaxy at a loss and put up extra money to kill that Next plan... maybe.
