what does morality have to do with this. He doesnt need the data plan. Not everyone needs it. Why should he be forced to pay 30 for something he wont use.

because its in the contract? the iphone 3g requires a $30 data plan regardless, if you dont like that or dont need it then too bad. thats the situation. you do not have an entitlement to own an iphone 3g, its a luxury. the you dont want to pay the data, you dont have to get the phone.

I don't need the internet; I'll be at school in the fall where everything is on WiFi anyway. And as far as SMS, I have that on my plan as is so I'd probably just buy standard unlimited texting rather than iPhone unlimited. And as far as why it hasn't been done, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I don't know why it wouldn't work.

It works for a time
until ATT makes a random check on you and sees that your back to using your iPhone
then they add the data plan back on, and even have the right to charge you for all the months of data you "skipped out on" (it's in your contract, you agreed to allow them to do this)
there really is no reason for you to have an iPhone if you are unwilling to pay for data. That's the reason phones that aren't as expensive and don't require data plans exist. If you really like the internet/interface/functionality of an iPhone, your better off with a normal phone and an iPod touch.

however, it is still a possibility that your idea MAY work. Just don't be upset/surprised if you get a huge bill for all those months you didn't have the data plan. Also, if you do pull this off, be VERY careful not to EVER use data. It adds up fast, and suddenly you could be "saving" 30 bucks, but spending thousands because you have no data plan.

personally, I think you'd be better off finding something you can cut out of your expenses. It's 30 bucks a month. I'm sure theres something else you do frequently that you can go without, and will save you 30 bucks a month by foregoing. But thats just my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong

That is laughable. The phone companies keep fine tuning the contract for their own financial benefits, the contract itself is not moral. I was with t-mobile when they raised their text messaging rates from 15 to 20 cents. What happened to the contract that I signed that stated that each text message was 15 cents? Or the credit card companies that switch peoples APR in mid contract.

It does work. They will not back charge you, they cant charge you for something you did not use. They will just add data to your account, its stated in their terms.

but att is not raising the data charges mid contract. maybe your argument would make sense if att raised the price of the data plan from $30 to $35. from the launch the iphone 3g has required a $30 data plan.

if you think that is too steep then nobody is making you buy an iphone 3g. you dont want to pay for the data plan, you dont have to buy the phone. being an apple enthusiast doesnt entitle you to owning an iphone with no data plan.

im thinking about selling my iphone 3g and using a blackjack 2 i got from a friend. can i cancel my data plan?

The point is phone companies will raise fees on the customer. I used text messaging as an example. All the major carriers have raised text messaging rates, and you have to live with it.

I am not referring to ATT in particular but phone companies, and companies in general. They always change terms and stick it to you. I was willingly paying for the data plan, and yes I can afford it. I cancelled because I was using my data over wifi (at work and at home). Why the hell am I paying $30 a month for 600mb of data. If there was no way to cancel it, I would keep it. Since there is a way the logical thing for me to do is follow that way.

i agree that cell phone rates are too high, but that does not mean they dont exist. i think until the US market gets beyond subsidizing phones we will have to put up with these $30 data plans.

you are not supposed to be able to cancel the $30 data plan, if a rep did it for you they were breaking the att policy and should probably be fired.

what you have done is buy the iphone 3g at a subsidized price, and then canceled the data plan that makes it possible for att to offer that subsidized price to you. i dont think you should be talking about morality.

Thats my whole point. Someone else brought the morality issue up. Not me. As long as they allow you to cancel it, if you want to go ahead. There is nothing wrong with that.

well all im saying is if a csr cancels your iphone 3g data plan they are doing something wrong.
