Such as? I'm sure that video and picture editing are examples, but I've never edited either of these in my life.

I'm sure it will help overall performance, especially in the longer(ish) run, as it seems like they love adding it cool graphical effects to everyday stuff. I miss XP from that standpoint, it was ugly as hell.

How much improvement are we looking at from Skylake iGPU? I've read everything from -5% to up to 50%, but I haven't researched it that much..

Well, just look at OS X.
It's becoming more and more dependent on GPU power in order to provide cleaner, smoother and fancier graphics.
A more powerful GPU will ensure that OS X's GUI keeps running nice and smooth for a long time.

More GPU power also means a better experience with multiple monitors.
Meaning there's more power available for content once the added display has taken it's cut.
As I understand it Skylake will even be able to power three additional displays at 3840x2160, compared to Hashwells two.

With regards to video decoding, Skylake will provide a smoother experience while watching high resolution videos.

Also a more power efficient GPU means longer battery life.
The Skylake GPU will be able to do it's job faster while consuming less power and generating less heat than it's Haswell predecessor.

So I say wait.
-or don't, it's your own decision.

EDIT:

With regards to an actual total percentage increase in power over Haswell.
Errr, I've seen 40% getting thrown around a lot, but mainly that's been with regards to Broadwell vs Skylake and not even the Iris Pro variant.
So I have no clue but I think we won't be dissapointed if we expect at least a 25% all round raw performance increase.
-but that's a number I just pulled out of my hat, a hat worn by someone who knows F-all about anything really (me).

There just really is no good answer. If I wait, then I will inevitably end up paying more. The minute I get home, I will have a use for every port on the current rMBP, and so if they drop a single one of those ports, I will have to buy at least one adapter. If they have less than 5(not counting 1/8" and MagSafe)I will have to buy a dock..

I would also imagine their won't be any deals for a few months after its release, and so the most I would save there is sales tax. On top of that, I'll be using a first batch of a most likely completely new MacBook.

The current one has every port I need, more than enough power for what I do with my computer, I'm going with it.

If the new one comes out and I regret not waiting, I'll take it as a lesson learned and try and sell mine. Or not. At some point I'm just going to have to be happy with what I have.

If you really have use for every single one of those ports on a daily basis, then waiting will actually improve things for you. Do you really want a mobile computer that you have to unplug and plug back in up to 7 devices every time you use it? A new model with usb-c will allow you to keep all that stuff plugged in on your desk and make just a single connection.

I already have a 15" 2015 with dGPU, picked it up for $2100 no tax/free ship during xmas. Love the thing. I have seen no throttling at all in OS X with professional apps. I push the machine hard. I don't game in bootcamp/windows so I can't speak for the throttling there. There is, however, an easy work around in windows that won't jeopardize your machine if you're a gamer.

The attached deal from B&H is a really good value, if you ask me...

Just know, however, that even though the CPUs are the same in the 2014/2015, the SSD is phenomenally fast in the 2015 (I can actually see the difference), and the dGPU is heavily optimized for certain apps. The 2015 can also push a 5k display without problems.

is Windows performing better on MacBook with the nvidia card?

I don't video edit or picture edit. If I play a game on the thing it will be the Sims 4. Possibly mine craft. I'm not much of a gamer. I just don't think I need dGPU, especially considering the added price and risk of failure.

That new sky lake thread is interesting.

True, and in prior cases of these, Apple released an update a week before or after the event. Even if its not March, the release is due shortly, so the OP is best served waiting.

IF you're going after the 13 inch Skylake isn't THAT MUCH BETTER then Broadwell at least to wait a few months for it .... If you want a Macbook pro I say just go for it now because B and H photo is still doing sales for it now I believe for the 15 inch model.

i thought even 13 inch MacBook Pro with HD 550 will be a huge performance jump versus current Broadwell GPU. Anyone knows exact difference?

From what I remember the threshold before Tjunction is set far lower for the m370x as opposed to the 750m. So the m370x throttles more under bootcamp/windows/gaming than the 750m. But seeing that the threshold is set so far below Tjunction the dGPU can be tweaked without worry of hitting Tjunction. Whereas messing with the 750m can quickly result in dGPU failure. So the simple answer is yes, the 750m is better for gaming in windows if you don't have the knowledge/application to tweak the dGPU under windows.

I might be wrong, so it may be better to wait for others who are more knowledgable to answer this...

Good luck!

Preliminary data:

H-Series (MacBook Pro): Up to 11% faster CPU, up to 16% faster Intel HD graphics, up to 80% lower silicon power.

Some say the Intel HD graphics should be on par with the m370x. It is "expected" to be, but it is not known for sure. I personally would bet against this...

wow only up to 16% faster GPU in 13 inch pro? thats not much then! Must be HD 580 on 15 inch pro is a better performance jump. Shame its way too big for my needs.
Anyway looks like 12 inch Retina macbook will gain the most with skylake, 10% CPU and up to 40% GPU :) if they improve that dreadful 480p camera and add second usb-c port, that will be perfect :)

Wow.. That's crazy. I wish you could get iPhones at that kind of discount a year later. Haha
