So how do you explain the surprise speed bump on the macbook white recently?

So much for "logic", eh?

that wasn't a surprise. apple did it based on NO profit ability to currently produce a $999 alum macbook which they stated previously before and after the update as well. they also went to clarify that they wanted to make the white macbook for the up and coming college students an enticing offer based on budgets.

so much for "logic," eh? peace.

and the better screen and ddr3 memory

The DDR3 doesn't give THAT much real world benchmark performance, as seen that the Whitebook with the 2.13ghz CPU beats the 2.0 unibody by 5% or so even with the 800mhz DDR2.

For a moment, let's assuming CPU ghz-->benchmark performance is linear (which it's not)...

2.13ghz vs 2.0ghz is an increase of 6.5%. The performance is 5% different. That means the RAM speed difference would lead to ~1.5% in this case. Not a whole lot IMO =\

"Upping" the specs for the macbook white while leaving the uMB's unchanged is/was definitely a surprise by any standard.

Furthermore, if their logic is to increase sales of the whites then either they're stupid or the profit margins on the whites are better than the uMB's. And if they can't make the uMB any more profitable at a cheaper price I don't know what will change that down the road. Users of both machines have similar needs and neither machine does anything good or bad that clearly sets it apart from the other (except for looks which may not be enough in this economy).

Apple is not only competing with the PC world now... they're also competing with themselves. They overpriced the uMB and are in too deep to do anything about it.

I'm going to best buy to buy my macbook today (using my uncle's employee discount), and I'm going to be so P'off if Apple ups the specs tomorrow. I need to buy it today (cuz my uncle's going to be off to Puerto Rico for two weeks on Tuesday, and I don't want to wait until he comes back). I'm crossing my fingers that I don't regret it :(.

Well idk if you bought it or not but BB employee prices on MBs suck compared to educational discounts, you can even find better deals on MacMall and Amazon usually.
Personally I am going to wait for an update and buy from Apple w/ educational discount as soon as they update them.

nothing beats the brushed aluminum sex appeal :)

what apple did, is that they boosted the 2.0 whitebook to 2.13. This makes everyone think that the whitebook is better than the 2.0 ghz ub macbook. However, within a couple weeks, apple will PROBABLY boost the aluminum macbooks to 2.26 and 2.66 respectively. It's obvious an update is imminent. JUST WAIT. Seriously, do Best Buy employees get that huge of a discount. I mean, unless you are like a manager, I don't see how you can beat the free ipod and printer deal plus edu discount

WAIT!!! Halt!

Hey, you might as well wait until they bump the specs- it's NOT worth paying for a nearly year-old computer, especially at Mac's prices.:eek: If you can, I recommend even waiting until Snow Leopard:apple: comes out. That's what I'm doing.:D Wish you the best in your purchase!

DO NOT BUY NOW!

Even if nothing were to happen, then you've waited long enough. If you're regretting the purchase if they change the specs a few days or weeks later, then you probably should reassess your priorities.

Woohoo.

Alright, I want all that monopoly money!
