Recently sold my air 2 and got the Pro 9.7. The screen is significantly better due to the true tone and other improvements. Much easier to read and better on the eyes. The camera is also much better but not sure how many people really need or use it. Speakers are much better - louder and four of them. The Pro 9.7 is faster but not a huge jump. Still no improvements on the Touch ID it seems pretty slow when compared to my 7 plus. Also keep mind the Pro 9.7 has the 2gb of ram as the air 2. If you want something that's more future proof then go for the Pro 9.7. I wouldn't say it's worth the extra cost Apple is charging. I bought my Pro 9.7 at Costco at a discounted price. If a new iPad is released in march I can return this one with Costco's 90 day return policy.

Another thing I remember about why I didn't like the Air 2. That weird screen distortion when I held the device a certain way or the case pushed up against it.

Buy the PRO.
If you buy the Air2 you will find in the back of your mind you will always question how much faster the PRO would have been compared to your brand new just purchased iPad Air2.
Just get the best one. You won't regret paying more in the end for the extra quality. Get at least the 128gb version, don't buy the 32gb.
My two cents.
After owning an iPad Air 2 for over two years, I can confidently say I do not share your opinion on performance. If my iPad Air 2 broke or got lost/stolen and I had to pay full price for a new iPad right now, I would, without hesitation, buy another iPad Air 2.

Also, you can't recommend a storage size for everybody because everyone uses their iPad for different things. You may need 128GB, but I manage with only 16GB. I would like a little more however, so 32GB would be more than enough for me. OP said he/she wants an iPad for streaming video, browsing the web, Google Docs, and taking notes. 32GB sounds like plenty for OP.

!00% sure your device had some defect. I have two iPad Air 2s in my house and none of them have screen distortion issue. Otherwise there would have been flooding of complaints here.

It's definitely a common issue. My first iPad didn't have any issue with it at all but my current one does. It's not really a problem for me, though. It doesn't show up just holding my iPad with one hand, but I can make it happen if I put a little pressure on the back.

Yeah I will definitely only get 32 gigs. With all of the cloud storage options, I don't need a ton of storage capacity on the actual device.

A lot of times certain cases made the distortion even worse. I went through 3 cases before finding one that didn't cause it when I held it. Ultimately I sold the Air 2 for the Pro 9.7 as the sound vibrations and rattle nose at higher volumes was a no.

There already was a successor to the Air2. It was the Pro9.7.
No, that's not how Apple views it. With the next update, they're going to bump the Pro 9.7 up to some type of 10.x screen and release another 9.7 model with no smart connector, cheaper LEDs and an A9X chip. That'd be the successor to the Air 2.

The Pro 9.7 added the pencil and they went the Pro name (along with the accessory capability).

That leaves the door open for an Air3 (maybe no pencil support) if Apple wants to spin it that way.

Makes no difference to me...I go by what the product offers...names are unimportant to me.

So today I bought the iPad Pro 9.7 from Best Buy for a really good price. Loving it so far! The speakers are incredibly good, the camera is awesome, the processor is snappy and I'm looking forward to Smart Keyboard any maybe an Apple Pencil at some point. Thanks for your help everyone; thanks for voting in the poll and thanks for sharing your experiences!

Are you still holding out for an iPad 5th generation to replace the 4th gen, or an iPhone 4G to replace the 3G?

The iPad Pro is the iPad Air 2's successor. The iPad Air 2 came out in 2014. If there was going to be another successor, it would have come out by now.

If March doesn't bring anything special in terms of hardware for the iPad, the 9.7 Pro will be my next iPad purchase.

I concluded that they probably won't release the 10.x model in March. They don't want to steal the thunder / surprise factor from the iPhone 8, which they see a huge opportunity in with the Note Explosion Gate. Even when they do release the new iPad it'll be much more expensive than what I paid for my Pro.

I think you made a great choice, based on all currently available info. And like you said earlier, you can use your gift card(s) to get the Smart Keyboard. Well done!

Damn, I wish I saw this post a few days ago. Best Buy just had a deal I got in on, iPad Air 2 with apple care+ together for $350. I jumped on it.

In Canada it's crazy, the Air 2 128GB is $629 vs the Pro 32GB for $799. I know the Pro has a fair few updates, but that's a load more cash for only 1/4 of the storage. Or the Air 2 32GB, if you can find it, is $499.

A $300 surcharge for the Pro - that's insanity IMHO.

If anyone is interested, Target is selling the pro 9.7 for $150 off on all the models.
WOW thanks so much for telling me this!! I bought my pro from Best Buy a week ago at 75 off and since they have price match I was able to call them today and get another 80 dollars credited back to me, so I got the Target sale too :)

Have to give cred to BB with their price match.

It's a nice security blanket and makes them worthwhile for these kind of purchases.
