Hi:

I'd like to buy a Verizon iPhone X for use on AT&T– I know the best way to do that is just to show up in the morning and by at full price, I have tried getting to the store early several times but there are so many resellers in-line that the stock gets sold out.

I know that when buying a Verizon phone online you are ordinarily asked for Verizon Account credentials– But I tried it in the app today without completing a purchase, and if I selected "full price" (not replacing a phone) and "activate later", it takes me straight to the payment button without asking fir any Verizon credentials. Is this a way to order a Verizon phone online for pick up without having the phone link to a Verizon account when I pop in my AT&T Sim card and turn it on? Or will they just require that information when I go to pick it up?

Thanks,
M

Edited to add - I'd like the Verizon model because it seems the most flexible and has the QUALCOMM chipset. At the same time, I have been on AT&T for 10 years, will stay there, and I don't do much travel abroad. Am I really just overthinking it as to whether I even really need the Verizon phone? Is there a higher resale value on it or something? Sure, if I am paying this much money, I want to get the absolute most bang for my buck–but as a practical matter am I really just making my life harder?

Thanks for your post. I was just able to reserve an iPhone X for pickup this morning with no carrier information required.

I bought my Verizon model on swappa.com - only ended being about 50$ more than retail and was way less hassle than trying to coordinate with a store and hope they’d sell me a Qualcomm version

Please check back and let me know your experience. I didn't pull the trigger on the Verizon - but they pop up every few days so I can try again if it will work.

i just bought one right now.ill already paid for it so probably they wont ask any verizon acount info when i pickup it up at lunch break, when you read read this closely it certainly says about the phone being compatible to any active sim.

I'm 1001% biased because I also bought the VZW model for use on a different network. I think it's worth a small effort both for likely performance (can't prove it since I don't have an Intel model to compare) and also resale ease if not value. I wouldn't camp out daily for one though, no. It's not that big of a deal. But if I had an immediate choice, VZW hands down.

Also, the fact that the VZW iPhone X can be used on all carriers increases the number of potential buyers in the future, even if the performance between models is equivalent. That will make it easier to sell at least, and probably command a premium as well.

I purchased a GSM X on eBay, unlocked. Very happy to see it was the Verizon version. Popped my T-Mobile sim in and it worked flawlessly. Very glad to know I can use any carrier on this model, should help with resell value.

question though!what if you need to get a warranty for example faulty screen does apple cover it if your not the original owner?

Yes, this is effectively the SIM free version available now. You will be able to activate it with your ATT sim.

I've heard that the Sprint version is the same as the Verizon model... does anyone know if this is the case?

I believe it shouldn’t matter with AppleCare, don’t know about anything else. Some items are sold as-is through third parties.

Oh yeah, if new enough, all Apple items are covered no matter what. Maybe 90 days? Can’t remember. I’m speaking of outside that window.

I thought you could buy Apple care anytime within 30 days of purchase, even online. I don’t think they need any kind of receipt as their system shows when the phone was purchased. Never tried it this way so I can’t say for sure

QC performance appears to be worse this year, but probably offset buy being able to use on any carrier.

I walked past the line and straight into the store. Picked up the phone I reserved, took about 5 minutes. When I got home there was a Verizon SIM in it which I removed and put in my ATT SIM. All works great.

If you have a link to a scientifically conducted test I'd love to see it. I haven't seen any yet. Until then nothing but anecdotal to go on and in that vein I personally haven't experienced worse performance between my iPhone 7 (SIM-Free, unlocked) and my iPhone X VZW, both on TMob.

I think any test would be anecdotal. Everything I have seen is the performance is similar, but Apple improved the Intel modem on At&t and T Mobile, which makes sense after how much crap they got for how bad it was last year comparatively. I am same boat as you, Verizon model not on Verizon, just don't think it is any better this year.

Correct. Any test that isn't conducted in a scientific matter by definition would be anecdotal. But that doesn't mean a scientific test couldn't be performed. I haven't seen any yet. It's why no one can make a performance claim one way or the other here.

Sorry to jump in with a little different question. But, I know this topic has been covered a lot. I too am thinking of a Verizon model for ATT. Only hoping, per some comments, it may acquire and hold a weak signal better. As some of my business appts are rural.

Specifically, can I buy, paid in full, a Verizon X. Take it and set up on ATT. Will Target allow that? I am assuming it will come with a Verizon sim. But, it won't matter. Take it out and put my sim in and set up on ATT.

Or, would it be safer to buy thru Apple the Verizon X, sim free. Paid in full and not tied to any carrier. They are allowing that now.

Thanks

Interesting test. Shows Intel on ATT outperforming Qualcomm on ATT.

My understanding with Target is that they won't sell it outright and that they'll make you be on a carrier financing. At least that's what I read somewhere here. Probably safer to buy it through Apple.com or Apple store.

That's what I am thinking also. Sometimes I get an urge just buy something. Saw a local Target had a couple and started to get an itch to just buy one.
