Can someone give some clarification? From what I see you need to be a developer by paying the $99. Then download Xcode and you must use a Mac to enable it on the iPad?

I have none of these, other than the ipad, so it seems I would have to jailbreak and use a jailbreak app like ihome.

@rtztgue, registration is free. Xcode 3 is free. Download Xcode 3, connect your iPad, enabled developer mode. Takes less than a minute.

Edit: If you don't have a Mac, then maybe find a friend with Xcode, or jailbreak like you said.

@rtztgue, be careful with your jailbreak.. unless you have 4.2.1 SHSHs saved. Use greenpois0n, and follow the instructions.

Good luck!

Anyone have a good source to download xcode 3? I bought Xcode 4 off of the app store and am hooked on the gestures. Just put on 4.3.1 and now I need to redo it...but I deleted xcode4 and don't see a way to re-download it from the app store.

You should be able to go to purchased apps tab and re-download it.

How is this better than this?

1 button push to home
2 button push to app switcher
2 button push and select app to switch open apps

it's for people that find it sooooooo strenuous and archaic to depress a single physical button to achieve those certain tasks.

When it comes to switching between Apps, screen gestures get you from Point A to Point B quicker.

Switching between Apps using the Home Button

Double Press Home Button
Scroll thru Switcher Bar
Select App

Switching between Apps using Gestures

4 Finger Swipe Left or Right

I've never heard anything about this before...was this something that was widely discussed? Why is this not just able to be enabled within the iPad settings? Seems like it should be...

@Good.Shepard go to the purchases tab, then install it again.

I appreciate the advice, guys. But something's afoot. The button next to it has "update" but it won't let me do it (since it's no longer installed). I'm thinking something is still lingering in there even though it's not showing up on the spotlight.

I'll do some cleaning and resets and then give it another run.

Also, just as an update, after doing a hard restart on my ipad the gestures are working again. So I don't need to reinstall xcode afterall. 4.3.1 doesn't set it back.

But I still want to figure out this xcode mystery.

It's enabled in Beta releases of 4.3 but not enable in the final release. It conflicts with the functionality of some Apps that require 4 simultaneous touch inputs.

I've found a weird bug with the pinch to home screen gesture. If I have a badge on Words with Friends and I go in and play in that game, if I pinch to return to the home screen, the badge stays, but if I press the home button to exit it, the badge goes away.

There's something different in the two commands to return to the home screen.

Why aren't these gestures unlocked for everyone by now?

At least with an option -- is it because of their compatibility with apps?

These gestures are in testing for the 4.3 release cycle. It just was not "beta" testing for the beta firmware release. Apple will probably enable them for the next cycle or even wait till iOS 5 (depending on the issues).

Registered and downloaded Xcode 3 yesterday. Got the extra gestures unlocked in a few mins. All for free! Thanks!

Anyone know what is needed to uninstall Xcode? It takes so much room so planned on installing, enabling then deleting. I assume it'll still work after?

If you dont want to jailbreak you can enable them on using your PC. I did that on my iPad1, I dont know if it will work on iPad 2 or not, but it should work. go to this link and follow simple instructions. and you dont need to buy anything. http://www.icopybot.com/blog/enable-multitouch-gestures-on-ipad-without-jailbreaking.htm

If anyone tries this with an ipad 2, let us know how it goes!. :)

Also do you think doing this will cause any problems with updating the ios later on? (I guess you could just delete those 2 lines before updating?).

there should be a PDF in your /Developer/ folder

there's pretty much a terminal command that deletes all of it

Actually they are really useful when you are constantly switching between apps. Like if you have to copy a bunch of files from one app to another:
Before:
1. Open app 1
2. Open in...
3. Double click home
4. Tap on app 1 icon
5. repeat

Now:
1. Open app 1
2. Open in...
3. 4 finger swipe
4. Repeat.

Not only does it remove one step, it also means you don't have to move your hand away from the screen every time you need to switch, it is already in position. It gets really annoying if you have to do the same thing 4 or 5 times.

The only issue I've had with it is in GarageBand, as if you have 3 fingers holding a chord on the keyboard while adjusting a knob it will try to switch apps.

you missed my sarcasm (extra o's in the work so). i use the gestures, and I like 'em.

Do you never cmd+tab / alt+tab?

Thats pretty much the equivalent of the side swipe.
Going back and forth between two apps with a single swipe.

no, i use 4 finger swipe on my magic trackpad, just like I do on my ipad now. i believe you also missed my sarcasm. this stuff works great, and now i find myself somewhat disappointed when I have to use the home button on my iphone now. 4 fingers (at least from my hand) will be hard on the iphone, but 3 would work. now if they would only add 3 finger back/forth to Safari on iPad!
