I have a mac pro with 4 internal hard drives. One of the hard drives (a relatively new Seagate Barracuda) makes a horrible buzzing noise. When the I eject the hard drive (dragging to trash, or through disk utility) I can hear the drive power-down and the buzzing thankfully stops. The problem is that for a reason I can't understand, the hard drive starts up again (and so does the buzzing), although it does not mount.

The only way to stop the drive buzzing is to mount, and straight away unmount it again.
I have to do this every 15 mins or so...

I need the hard drive in the mac to access data occasionally, so physically removing the drive is not an option.

Does anyone have any advice about how to -
1-Stop the hard drive powering itself up?
    or
2- Stop the thing buzzing (yes, I have checked it is securely fastened to the sled)

    Many thanks

yes rma the drive and if you can not send it in and wait for the replacement buy a 1tb or larger hdd and copy the bad one onto it.
you have a 2k plus computer with all 4 bays used. you should have a low cost piece of gear like this.

keep it in a box and drag it out to clone drives.

this is like an oil change for your car. well more like flushing your radiator it is part of maintenance .

maybe a spare tire and an easy way to change it is the best way of looking at it. a tire lasts 50000 or 60000 miles but sometimes you get a flat after only 5,000 miles.

the dock i linked is your jack. there are tons of hdds to have around as a spare tire so to speak. 25 for the dock 50 for the 1tb hdd and you are always ready.

thanks once in a while I get lucky. I figure the MP is 2k plus the dock and the spare hdd is 75 so it is worth having.
