We all have our opinions - I personally found the 17 too big (even 15 was big for me) so I got the 13. But yes, I see why people would like the 17 and think Apple should not discontinue it.

The 17" is severly overpriced, that's what is wrong with the 17" MBP.

I totally agree. The 17" is twice as expensive as the 13". Yes, it's a beefier machine but... $2500?!?! really?!?! I personally think it's out of whack to be honest.

The 17" has been at the same price point since 2004, and has in fact dropped slightly. I have had three, including the Early 2009 UB I currently own. I have no complaint about the pricing for a premium product.

i noticed that the macbook air was mentioned and the macbook pro was not during todays conf call.

The 17" is severly overpriced, that's what is wrong with the 17" MBP. If you look at competitors, the increase to 17" inch isn't that much more expensive. It's only with Apple laptops.

So people go buy the 15" MBP instead of the 17" due to the big jump in money. If Apple prices the 17" MBP at a more reasonable level, the 17" MBP would be alot more profitable due to more volume.

This is the truth of it, the starting price for a brand new MacBook Pro 17" is astronomical in comparison to competitors. Most consumers can stomach the price hike on the 13" model and maybe the 15" model, but it just seems to be way out there for the 17".

I don't think either of you have compared a spec for spec 17" laptop. The 17" MBP usually ends up being about $400 or so more than a comparable PC, and the MBP is THINNER and LIGHTER than the other 17" PCs on the market.

Now, the specs are a completely different ball game. I've always thought Apple should have made the 17" a bit thicker to allow for more ports and better cooling for faster CPUs and GPUs.

Apple is a function of profitability, that`s one of the reasons they are where they are now as a tech company. Apple has always looked to streamline their product line since SJ returned to the helm and dont see any change to that strategy anytime soon. product lines selling in volume will be enhanced and refined, product that does not meet Apple`s stringent profit margins will be cut.

As for the fate of the 17" MBP we will all see soon enough, I for one would like the 17" go on and evolve, however I rather fear that the time has come. Last time I enquired about a 17" I was advised it would need to be a special order as they are not stocked due to the lack of demand, which frankly speaks volumes.

The 17" MBP for many is an icon, even if they have no aspiration to own one, yet if it`s not profitable in volume or brings some other significant tangible benefit to Apple, same as many the 17" will become a part of Apple`s past...

... so many useless smart assed remarks from the usual ****** ...

Unfortunately this 'analyst' has been very accurate in the past, so there is cause for alarm by anyone who uses, wants or needs a 17".

For those suggesting a "reaction" rather than "pro-action" you simply don't get it.

You are wasting time. No one cares about feedback and your opinion at Apple. They need to see the bottom line. If they are cranking these out at a certain price, and are not making enough money to justify it, they will be killed. It's that simple. If a million people e-mail Apple to say they love the 17" MBP and the only sale 250,000 a year, it's a dead product.
