$19 for a cable is a rip off. Especially since it's very prone to wear.

What do you kids do to those cables?

Our family plan has 5 iPhone 4 phones that was acquired on their release date.

My wife and I are on our original cables.

The kids, well God knows how many they have gone through?

Do you chew on them?

Play Tug-Of-War?

Or are you kids just generally abusive to your devices?

I've only worn through one lightening cable since getting my iPhone 5 on launch day - and that was the one by my bed. Since I often use my phone in bed, that cable takes a lot of abuse!

Every other lightening cable has been fine. As long as you don't subject them to excessive abuse, there's nothing wrong with the cables.

Cable not Apple certified? Give me a break

Different life styles.

Some people have jobs that they work with there hands and the cords get dirtier and worn out faster.

Myself personally I do a lot of traveling and a lot of backpacking. So my cable that has travelled across the planet several times and been in a pack weeks on end in all weather conditions might get worn out faster then one that never leaves a nightstand.

I bought some 10ft cheap cables that will charge my 5, 5s and 5c even though it says it's not compatible. They will not charge the iPads at all though.

I am sorry, all of you are brainwashed. Apple made things so that you HAVE to buy their expensive cable and you are going like, yeah is worth it man. Nothing is too good for my $600 baby.

And you're here... Why

as expensive as the official cables are; my $750 iPhone deserves nothing less. Like many have stated, there are so many problems with unofficial cables: not fitting, not charging, error messages, etc.

This is what I would do if I need a lightening cable.

I WILL not pay Apple.

I WILL try the $2 Chinese. If it doesn't work, am out $2, is OK.

If I don't have time trying things out, I will look for a cheaper off brand, maybe belkin, etc probly from a brick&mortar so if it doesn't work I just return it.

Sorry, $20 for a cable is insane.
That's nice for you. I hope you don't get electrocuted. Or burn your children to death in a house fire.

You don't have to buy an Apple cable. But to conform to the Lightning trademark it does have to be licensed. Part of the license is that it is manufactured to certain quality and safety standards at an authorized location. That's for your benefit and safety.

i like the coloured ones

the alternative cables are tempting. i got a green one to match my colorful iPhone 5c:D

When the iPhone 5 first came out, I had to buy the Apple cable. But now I buy the Amazon Basics cable. It is twice as long as the Apple cable and better constructed and cheaper. It is only 14.95$. You can even get a shorter cable like the one Apple sells. I have two of them and they work all the time and I have not had an on screen warning about unauthorized cables using the Amazon Basics. I highly recommend them.

Like aformentioned, you can get away with buying the crappy iphone 4 china cables, but not the iphone 5/5c/5s cables. The iphone wont let anything happen with a cable thats isnt apple certified. It will not work one bit.

Oddly enough so far I have had better luck with the cheap lightning cables than the cheap 30 pin cables. The cheap 30 pin cables would often work in my phones, but not in my iPad.
I tried to look carefully for sellers on eBay with good feedback for the lightning cables. I have gotten a couple sets of 3 for $8 and one set of 5 for about the same. I have had trouble with two of those cables so far. They work great in both my iPhone 5s and my iPad Air. The only time I see the message about the cable not being legitimate is when the device is at 100% battery.

I wanted to buy only legitimate cables, but that would have been over $100 for cables for home, work, and cars for a couple people. Just because I bought an iphone doesn't mean I want to spend that much on cables.

Over dramatic? Burning children in a house fire? Gimme a break...

China knock-off iPhone 5 charging lightning cable...says it isn't apple certified when I plug it into my 5S, then the iPhone starts connecting then disconnecting to the computer really quickly over and over.

Lesson learned, dont buy cheap China crap. Spend the extra 4 dollars on a REAL cord. Not some eBay knock-off.

Yea. Happened to one of mine when I bought it from eBay. Worked for about 2 weeks then it starting having the charging issue. I went to Sears and bought a Belkin charger and it's been working great ever since.

That's what fires do to people. Every day. Or did you not know that?

I really don't know what to say. Do you know the person you quoted and their kids? Or are you assuming they have kids?

My comment was more toward the likelihood of a generic cable starting a fire. While not impossible it's unlikely and no more likely then a worn out oem cable starting a fire. Its just not a lot of current to cause ignition.

I know for certain the Mota Cable on groupon works

with the 5s I bought the 6ft one and I am currently syncing and using it to charge as well.

LOl You guys (Macrumors) cant go anywhere without finding something to whine, complain, bicker, and fight about...cracks me up. Keep it going...:D

Anyone find cheap 3rd party lightning cables that consistently work on the 5s? Pretty much none of mine work. On my 5 after ios7 I get the warning popular that can be dismissed. But on the 5s nearly all the cables don't work at all and the ones that do don't always keep charging. I'm okay with using non certified cables (I particular find retractables useful and have them everywhere) but always stick with authentic/quality chargers for obvious reasons.

Cheap as in $5? I don't know if one, but cheaper than the Apple cable there is the Amazon Basics cable that I am using. No warnings and works everytime.

If you have to skimp on the cable in order to own an iPhone, then you are better off not owning one in the first place.

I do have an amazon basics cable although they don't fit that well with some cases which is more of a problem for my GF then me (naked). Less than $10 would be nice but I guess I'm more interested in retractable cables that work with the 5s. They aren't the most durable which is why they were never my main cable. But I had a handful for my 5/4s/ipad that I kept in odd places I might need for emergencies. They are tidy but also provide length when needed.
