Are they getting caught in the drawer? They look cut.

Nope. It had a cut out. It rests in the slot. The other one has never been near the car and just sits behind my computer until it is used to sync my phone or iPads.

Weird that apple wouldn't replace mine. My iPhone and iPad mini aren't even a year old yet.

What is your experience with lighting cables and having them come apart. One almost burnt me last night when it split open. I just found the one that sits by my computer and hardly gets used has split too. I have apple care + or square trade for all of my idevices. I have owned about 20 idevices in my family over the years.... And have had at least 25 cables. These are my first two to fall apart. Today the apple store gave me a hard time saying I should have brought if before it split... That it was my fault... For bending the cable. They did agree to replace it. The genius told me to be more careful... And I spitefully said... I can't be more careful and still use the cable. Have others had issues with cables? Do they give you a hard time? I'm about to book another appt for the other cable... And plan to go to a different store.
First one... Last night.

Second one... Today.

I had the same problem with 4 of my cables and apple replaced them all.

I had that issue with the 30 pin cable on my 4S. I can't remember if it was replaced over the phone with AppleCare (I have AC+) or in the store. Either way, no issues at all with replacement. If it was OTP I had to give them my credit card # in case I didn't return the damaged one.

I've since bought cables from Monoprice. They're a bit thicker. I use them mainly in my car and connected to the dock so they're not even really seen. The original Apple ones are kept in the packaging. Monoprice's are less expensive and I can get longer lengths.

All my cable charger wires have fallen apart at some point no different with the lightening ones. Same exact problem like the pics you posted

Apple replaced 1 of 2 of mine after that happened. I'll Never buy apple peripherals again. Only 3rd party. My belkin cords have held up thru worse.

My lightning cable is showing signs of getting ready to split, the rubber is beginning to shuffle its way up to the connector. I've never ever had an issue with any of my cables until now, this is a first for me.

I've had this problem with 30-pin cables but not Lightning, yet... we've had at least one Lightning cable in the house for a year or so, it almost never moves.

However, if the cable still works, just buy a roll of white electrical tape. It'll make the end a bit stiffer, sure, but it'll make the cable safe to use at a fraction of the cost of a new cable. Pick one up at any big-box or hardware store.

Lightening cable quality for me has been hit or miss but overall crap.

In my house we have 6. 4 that pretty much never move.

I have 30 pin cables from probably 2003 that traveled the country and in are better condition then those.

I agree with this. Recent Apple cables have been poor-quality rubbish in my experience.

I have the same experience with Lightning cables vs old 30-pin cables; with the older cables showing fantastic durability but the newer ones showing the exact same kind of tearing that the OP has.

I've also had this experience with MagSafe cables. I have an old MagSafe from 2006 that looks as good as new, but the MagSafe2 from my rMBP fell apart after just a few months

I had to replace the MagSafe on my 2006 MacBook several times. I think the 2nd or 3rd time it was either under a warranty or recall issue. After that it lasted many years. Are you sure it's the original?

Yup. 2008 BlackBook with original cable.

no need!

TS you have the 1 year warranty plus apple care +; they are supposed to exchange for you for free.

The apple one is very weak compared to my Belkin and AmazonBasics Cable, almost half as strong it feels.

This is true! I've had to replace a cable using the warrantee. Did it online, got the new one shipped to me and sent the old one back. (Warning: They do hold the amount on your credit card for a new one until they receive the old one, in case you don't send it back or it somehow is not covered [never had that happen to me])

We have like 9 iPhones in the house and yeah it has happened on practically all of them.

I find that some stores are jerks and say its abuse and do not change it talking about its not regular wear and tear, others as no questions.

Some make you get a genius bar appointment one cable per appointment which sucks, others just replace it with new in box while others give the same thats in the iPhone box.

I found that best buy brand rocket fish, belkin and griffin are very durable, noticeably so. I bought the black cables to match my space gray, looks real good and hold up very nice so far

I've had almost all of mine replaced at least once, and I've bought at least 3 spares. We have 2 in the car, and 3 in the house. Apple Store has never given me crap about replacing them but the old 30 pins have never had to be replaced in years of ownership using the original cables and not buying spares.

Not sure what the issue is. I like the smaller size and not having to orient the tip but the durability of these new cables is pretty poor. I'll keep taking them back to the Apple Store and have them replace them if they want to sell and supply crappy cables that aren't cheap to us. I think at this point, assuming $20 per cable retail, I've gotten almost $200 worth of cables replaced.

Before the iPhone 5, and using the 3G/3GS/4, I had the same after market 30 pin car charger for 4 years and it still works. Cable is in good condition and I can still use it to charge older devices. I had one Apple Lightning cable that didn't even last 2 months before I took it back. All we use the lightning cables for is with the supplied wall warts, and 2 in the car. Two in the living room, one in the bedroom, and 2 in the car.

One interesting thing that has happened to a few cables is looking at them there are 8 contacts on each side. We have had them slowly burn out the 4th contact from the left. So 3 clean contacts to the left of this pin and 4 to the right. Eventually the cable only works being inserted one way. We have a few right now with burned out 4th from the left contacts, and I'll just take them back once they stop working being inserted both ways. Hard for anyone at the store to say a burned out contact is acceptable.

I had to have mine replaced once already. Went to the Apple store and didn't have a problem. Now just a few months later there seems to be a short or something in it because if I nudge the phone while it's charging, the charge will cut in and out.

Hello,
My iPhone 5 was having issues when I would connect the lightning cable. Sometimes I would hear the charging chime, other times not. Sometimes I had to jiggle it to get it to charge.
I took it to the apple store, the girl took a small metal instrument and cleaned out the connector on my iPhone turns out it was lint.

Just thought id let u know.
