If VPN is running on the Mac and not the router I don't understand how that is going to sit outside of the firewall for the iPad to connect to. That's what I don't get. I asked how to do it and for instructions and no one has come through wtih them yet.

Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to type up instructions. Google 'iVPN' - download the app. It's pretty much self explanatory.

Then in your router you'll have to open the ports using port forwarding.

Then just type in the information that you input into iVPN (basically username and password) into the iPad's VPN settings.

Can someone explain how this Cablevision app works with the ipad?

According to the news articles today, it was not supposed to use the internet, but rather the "cable system".

This seemed unlikely to me, because then you would need some sort of cable connection between the ipad and the cable box...

Here is the Cablevision app FAQ.

Lots of good info, thanks.

I wonder how this works, technically.... it means that somehow the app is able to access the video streams on the cable modem...

So I hope to get more info on how this works, and how we can run this app on our MBPs! Why is this limited to just the ipad!?

Think about it. They expect you to use it AT HOME. You aren't supposed to use it over 3G or someone elses wifi (if they aren't cablevision customers? - not sure about this one)

So if you're at home, what are the odds you'll sit and watch an entire show on your iphone? It's too small.

Thats just my theory. I still won't give up my slingbox. It allows me to still watch the recorded content on my DVR.

I keep getting an "iPad entitlement not available" message. No idea what it's all about.

How do I open ports in my time capsule router, is ivpn freeware?

So if you have Cablevision TV and not their internet services you can't watch live TV on your iPad.

Per the faq: "Customers require an iPad device, a subscription to iO TV (with at least one (1) digital cable box or CableCARD), an Optimum authorized modem connected through your home wireless network (a secured wireless B or above router) are required to view live TV and Video On Demand selections using the Optimum App for iPad."

Kind of puts a slight crimp in it since I have Cablevision but use FiOS for broadband.

I read that Cablevision will provide a free modem that does not get Internet access but will allow this to work, I don't remember where I read it though, i will try and find the link see below

Yes I see that.. so they provide a cable modem which I then have to plug into my existing router which I already use for FiOS. Not sure how I would be able to plug in the cable modem if I'm already using FiOS on the WAN input of my AEBS?

In your case you would need one wireless router just for the app and another for fios. But since an iPad can be only on one network at a time it feels like a big waste.

I was wondering about this in the other thread.

It seems pretty weird...they're not asking people to buy dual-WAN routers are they? Maybe they have a way to get it to work as a device on the network instead of using the WAN port?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

I think you need the service. I don't think the modem has anything to do with the service.

I thought it was a free service to cable modem and cable tv customers. Not just tv customers.

Seems like a waste, I wouldn't do that although I do have an extra router sitting around. I wouldn't have a separate wireless network just to watch TV on my iPad. I'm happy with just the channel listings, and the ability to control my DVR :)

I got this app on my iPad and it could be absolutely perfect if I could access it on business travel to watch the Yankees but I just need help on the VPN thing if someone could help-

Do I need a router that allows me to set up a VPN first? I checked my buffalo router and it does not seem to have a VPN function....

Appreciate any help out there

Thanks

Actually it works on 3G pretty well. I setup a VPN at home and connect to it through the iPad. Tricks the app into thinking I'm home.

How much upstream bandwidth do you have? Time Warner home gives me about 200 -300k. So, i am not sure if it's enough to run the app over VPN..

You can consistently get 2 megabits up on Cablevision's lowest level Internet service (advertised as 5 up IIRC).

I used to get a solid 2 but I upgraded to their boost and get 30+ down and 5 up. It's a huge difference than their regular 12-15/2

Interesting…

HOW CABLEVISION COULD DELIVER LIVE TV TO IPAD OUTSIDE THE HOME

While Cablevision subscribers who download its new iPad app can only use it to watch live programming within their homes, the cable MSO could be laying the groundwork to use its extensive WiFi network to deliver live video to subscribers in public areas.

In the last three years, Cablevision has quietly expanded the coverage area for its WiFi hotspots. As this WiFi map shows, Optimum Online subscribers can access WiFi hotspots in thousands of public areas throughout its footprint, including retail stores, train stations, central business districts, parks and beaches.

Using WiFi transmission gear and software from Canada's BelAir Networks, Cablevision also has deals with Comcast and Time Warner Cable that allow subscribers from those MSOs to access its WiFi hotspots. Cablevision customers can access hotspots located in Comcast and Time Warner Cable territories under the WiFi agreements...

TiVo and Cablevision iPad app now working

The subject line pretty much says it all: as I suspected, Cablevision has worked out the kinks and now my TiVo (w/ 2 cablecards) plays nice with the new app.

Excellent application and what a boon to add something like this to an existing plan.

Same here. I have a similar setup with cablecards and it's working now for me to. I'm trying to setup a VPN and test outside my house. If so I'll be able to watch TV on my iPad at work. :p

I downloaded and installed EasyVPN and got it running on a spare Mac. I configured VPN on my iPad and I was able to get a connect. After getting a connection no IP would work. Couldn't browse the internet or launch any apps that require internet access. Is the VPN app supposed to share the internet connection with the connected iPad?
