A good point, badly made. I see your point, however. Everyone's getting a little whiney around here.

That's bordering on breaking the Forum Rules. Have you read them?

That seems to be a bit of a double-standard on your part. As far as I'm concerned, the "rule-breaking" post lashed out at a guy that didn't just "make a good point badly," but broke the same rule as bigmc6000. Seriously, some jerk calls us all retarded 14-year-old republicans and you say what you did to xenotaku, and then you warn someone that disagrees with him that he might be breaking forum rules? What's the difference? bigmc6000 went after one specific guy and xenotaku went after "most forum users?" That sounds worse, to me.

This whole thing reminds me of "Thank You For Smoking. GreenPeace is just an organization like the Anti-Smoking People. They'll do anything and say anything to get things they want done, whether or not they are right. I am just as insulted by their propaganda as I am by Apple's BS.

Yes, but is it unlockable? :p

There's nothing wrong with pushing an innovator like Apple to innovate on the environmental front as well. Apple's high profit margins should enable it to expend resources on finding more environmentally friendly materials for its products, and develop better packaging designs. I was shocked at how much styrofoam came with my iMac!

That said, Greenpeace often seems more interested in antagonizing Apple and other firms than actually sitting down and assisting with pragmatic solutions. (One wonders why "peace" is part of their name at all.) For that reason it's quietly effective groups like the Nature Conservancy that will continue to receive my contributions.

"I think I know I mean a "Yes" but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree"

We all want to change the world for the best, but is this the proper way to make a difference?

Apple should be in the forefront of environmentally-friendly design. They have Gore on the board, they trade on the name of a fruit, they claim to "think different". There is no reason on earth that they should use more toxins than absolutely necessary.

And Greenpeace do an extremely valuable job.

The thing that bothers me with these people is that they only criticize, they never offer alternatives. They don't like Bromine in the product? Come up with a solution, explain what it is, then maybe i'll take them more seriously. Anyone that naggs and whines about how things are, but has no idea how to fix them, doesn't require my attention.

By your logic only engineers with specific solutions in hand would be allowed to complain about pollution.

"Hey, your coal burning plant is spewing out mercury and acid."
"You got a fix for that?"
"No."
"Sorry, were you saying something?"

Your cliche about whiners without solutions may have some relevance in the workplace, where the person in question is complaining about something that is related to their job. It doesn't apply in matters of public discourse. Voices must be raised and heard in order to encourage those with the approriate skills to work on solutions and to put pressure on those who profit from harmful practices.

I suspect most of the whiners on here complaining about Green Peace attacking Apple are just worried about the values of their stock portfolios.

whoa there kiddy.

They just attack anything apple does.

As far as I'm concerned, Greenpeace can go f*** itself. They base all of their reports off plans, not what companies are doing (except in the case of apple, where they base only on what apple hasn't done that others have plans to do, and what they don't do before they say they will do it.) I can't believe they would say that " This isn't the right step for their plan to phase out Br (or what ever) by 2008." Congrats. It's still 2007.

Are you serious? You obviously didn't even read the PDF that Arn linked to.

I had no idea how hypocritical people can be here. (I should have known, I know!) Such hatred for an organization that may say things that are out of line (see above for a good example of that). It's pretty embarrassing to read such silly responses to an interesting environmental report on the iPhone. It's really not even that bad of a report. The next time you need to spew some hatred for GP, go outside and take a few deep breaths in. After the smog fills your lungs a few times you may change your tune.

:apple:

I'm an environmentalist, but I think Greenpeace goes too far. In fact, I refuse to support Greenpeace because I think they're bordering on a terrorist organization. They've done some shady things before.

When Greenpeace tries to get attention with stuff like this, I just ignore them. Sure, I would love to see Apple make everything environmentally friendly. However, if the iPhone was made of paper the nut jobs at Greenpeace would claim it's not environmentally friendly because it wastes trees. Use plastic, and you're consuming oil. Make it a holographic projection like on Star Trek, and you're wasting energy. Make it out of air, and you're consuming oxygen and contributing to global warming.

As many others have said, Greenpeace can go firk itself. Greenpeace should call itself Greenwar since that's essentially what they do to get their message across.

First of all, I think most of the venting against Greenpeace IN THIS INSTANCE is a bit unwarranted. Yes, they were dishonest, opportunistic idiots regarding the previous anti-Apple propaganda campaign. However, in this case, they do have a point that, unlike Nokia, Apple is using SOME toxic materials in the iPhone.

Having said that, I also must point out that Apple has already announced that they are phasing out these materials and given a rough timeline. So all the hand wringing about how "Apple doesn't care about the environment" is pretty unwarranted. Yes, I'm sure everyone, including Apple, would prefer everything was 100% green yesterday. Well, guess what? IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT IN THE REAL WORLD!

Nokia was well on it way to being 100% green long before Apple decided to get into the phone business. OF COURSE Nokia is ahead of Apple in this matter. Give the whining a rest. It's getting old.

...Don't be so quick to write off Greenpeace. They often use inappropriate methods on getting their message out, but they have done incalculable amazing things for our planet. The fact that they are always in the news about their "extreme" message is proof that using shock tactics works.

Ignoring all the childish name-calling, I will agree with you that GP uses inappropriate methods. However, I totally disagree that this helps their cause. If anything, it hurts the entire environmental cause.

How? Well, first of all, it gives ammunition to the "burn the trees, we don't care about the environment" side. Even worse thought, is that their antics turn off the moderate majority to the message GP should be trying to get out.

I've been concerned about the environment and have tried to do my best to follow the 3 Rs long before "being green" became the hip, politically correct thing to do. To me, Greenpeace rates just above the idiots who raid animal research centers or burn SUVs. I look at their antics and can only conclude that they care more about getting attention and collecting money than actually doing something to help the environment.

Btw, when did it become "fact" that Republicans hate the environment and Democrats love it? I know many "right-wingers" who genuinely care and do their part, and I also know "liberals" who talk the game but drive gas-guzzling SUVs/luxury cars and collect (and throw away, as in, throw in the trash) consumer electronics/batteries like crazy. Concern for the environment is and should be a non-political issue.

I suppose I should be glad that no one's tried to work iPhone hacking into this argument :)

It is unfortunate that the iPhone contains "toxic chemicals" but I am certain that Steve Jobs and Apple will address the situation. We can only hope that the next installment of the iPhone will be a greener one. For Apples sake.

Prof. :apple:

I love Apple.

couldn't this project potentially jack up the price of the iPhone? I don't really see what else there is to lose as an apple customer............
